The aim of this study was to evaluate prospective patients with periarticular fractures where a meta physeal bone defect was grafted with high compressive calcium sulfate cement. The calcium sulfate cement MIIG X3, (Wright Medical Technology, Inc, Arlington, TN) was used in 45 patients with periarticular fractures--distal radial, tibial plateau, humeral head, and calcaneal fractures--to fill the metaphyseal defect. All fractures were treated either with open or closed reduction, fracture fixation, and the cement was applied openly or closed. Radiographs were evaluated for fracture reduction, j

The authors report on a case of fracture of the distal humeral epiphysis sustained at birth. This is extremely rare. The main problem in treatment of this kind of fracture is correct and timely diagnosis. In almost all reported cases the fracture has been confused with elbow dislocation. The reason for this mistake is difficult roentgenological orientation owing to invisible ossification nuclei. Ultrasono und examination is recommended for diagnosis. The treatment of the injury is conservative. Closed reduction and immobilization for 3 weeks in an above-the-elbow plaster cast is advised. The e

Impending and complete pathologic fractures often necessitate surgical fixation. Traditional orthopedic implants are commonly used, achieving clinically acceptable outcomes, but their metallic composition can impair radiographic evaluation and affect radiation treatments. Recognition of these concerns led to the development of radiolucent implants such as the minimally invasive Photodynamic Bone Stabilization System (PBSS; IlluminOss Medical Inc), featuring a light cured polymer contained within an inflatable balloon catheter. Two participating hospitals in one health care system reviewed case

BACKGROUND: Nonunion is a challenging and not uncommon complication of distal humeral fractures. Our long-term experience with linked semiconstrained total elbow arthroplasty as a salvage procedure for patients with distal humeral nonunion not amenable to internal fixation was investigated.
METHODS: Ninety-one consecutive patients (ninety-two elbows) underwent total elbow arthroplasty for the treatment of a distal humeral nonunion, and the results were reviewed at a mean of 6.5 years postoperatively. Patients' charts and anteroposterior and lateral radiographs made prior to and immediately af

BACKGROUND: Heterotopic ossification (HO) is a frequent complication after surgical management of distal humerus fractures. This study aimed to identify factors associated with HO formation following fixation of AO/OTA type C distal humerus fractures, with particular attention to the potential influence of the olecranon osteotomy approach.
METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed 57 patients who underwent open reduction and internal fixation for intra-articular distal humerus fractures (AO/OTA 13C1-C3) between 2015 and 2024. Patients treated with either olecranon osteotomy or paratricipital appro

BACKGROUND: After displaced supracondylar humerus fractures (SCHF) in children, residual deformities are common with cubitus varus (CV) being the clinically most visible. Distal fragment malrotation may lead to instability, fragment tilt and subsequent CV. Detection and assessment of malrotation is difficult and the fate of post-traumatic humeral torsion deformity is unknown. The aim of this study was to evaluate the incidence of humeral torsion differences in children with surgically treated SCHF and to observe spontaneous changes over time.
METHODS: A cohort of 27 children with displaced an

INTRODUCTION: There is currently no universally accepted follow-up protocol for pediatric supracondylar humerus fractures (pSCHFs), but post-mobilization follow-ups are commonly scheduled to evaluate range of motion and the presence of deformities. Recent practice has trended towards enhancing efficiency by reducing unnecessary clinic visits for uncomplicated fractures. This study examines follow-up practices after pSCHFs at our multicenter institution, evaluating the utility of post-mobilization follow-up visits, and determining appropriate criteria for safe early discharge.

INTRODUCTION: The vague term of capitellar fractures is still frequently used to designate articular coronal fractures of the distal humeral epiphysis. The use of eponyms for their descriptions may cause confusion. Recent publications describe a wide variety of fracture types and recommend new classifications based on the operative findings. We report our results of surgical treatment of 12 cases of these fractures in comparison to recent series of the literature.
METHODS: Twelve patients (seven female and five male with a mean age of 31 years and 6 months) have been treated for articular cor

BACKGROUND: Cubitus varus is a well-reported complication of supracondylar fracture of the humerus potentially resulting in cosmetic problems, impaired function, and malpractice claims. Traditional methods of correcting malunited distal humeral fractures involve complex osteotomies that have a high complication rate, require a large exposure, and challenging fixation. We present a technique of gradual correction using a percutaneous transverse osteotomy and 3 dimensional correction with a Taylor Spatial Frame.
METHODS: This was a retrospective, IRB-approved study of 12 patients between 2006 a

BACKGROUND: Most children with humeral supracondylar fractures can be treated with simple closed reduction and cross-fixation with Kirschner (K)-wires. However, in a small proportion of cases, an acceptable closed reduction cannot be obtained, and open reduction becomes necessary. An alternative to open reduction is the use of a temporary 3-mm K-wire to manipulate and reduce the distal fragment. This report introduces the method of manipulation, as well as indications, and draws comparisons with complete close reduction cases.
METHODS: Of 118 patients, 76 (64.4%) were managed with the standar

INTRODUCTION: In Iran, like most other countries, COVID-19 has had a deep impact on children's lives. Our hypothesis was that, a significant change in the number of pediatric injuries has happened in trauma centers. In the current study, we intend to identify the possible epidemiological shift in pediatric fracture patterns, by comparing the data from 'COVID-19 era' and the mean data from the past 2 years. To the best of our knowledge there are only few reports on epidemiology of pediatric fractures during the COVID-19 outbreak.
METHODS: Data are reported in two sections. In the descriptive s

Purpose of the study The use of tourniquets during surgery of the distal humerus can improve visibility and reduce surgical time. However, the available operating field can be limited due to the size and placement of the tourniquet. This proof-of-concept study aimed to determine if sterile tourniquets can provide a wider surgical field compared to non-sterile tourniquets for procedures around the distal humerus. Methods Volunteers (n = 5) were positioned to simulate access to the distal humerus. The distance from the posterior corner of the acromion to the tip of the olecranon was measured. Pa

Olecranon osteotomy allows for improved visualization of the distal humeral articular surface. This study compared the clinical outcomes of 2 methods of olecranon repair following olecranon osteotomy as part of distal humerus fracture repair. This was a retrospective review of distal humerus fractures treated via a transolecranon approach during a 9-year period. In each case, the olecranon osteotomy was fixed with either tension band wiring (TBW) or plate fixation (PF). Patient demographics, injury information, and surgical management were recorded. Measured outcomes included elbow motion, tim

BACKGROUND: Pediatric distal forearm fractures are one of the most common injuries seen in the emergency department. Orthopedic teaching instructs providers to radiograph the joint above and the joint below the fracture site for concurrent injury. Despite this teaching, there is little evidence to suggest that elbow injuries are common in children with distal forearm fractures. Similarly, there are few data that help the clinician predict which children are at higher risk for co-injury.
METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional analysis of the 2011 National Emergency Department Sample data set.

AIM: Intra-articular non-union of fractures is an uncommon but complex problem because in general, it is characterised by marked instability, pain, strength loss and significant functional limitation. The aim of this study is to report our prospective medium-term outcomes of the treatment of intra-articular, distal humeral aseptic non-unions using open reduction and internal fixation, augmented with artificial bone.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A retrospective case series of 16 patients with intra-articular, aseptic non-unions of the distal humerus was analysed for range of motion, pain, Mayo Elbow

A six-year-old boy sustained a displaced and rotated supracondylar humerus fracture (SCHF) after falling from the monkey bars. He underwent closed reduction and percutaneous pinning using two lateral-entry Kirschner wires. He had an uneventful postoperative recovery and returned to full normal activity. A routine follow-up radiograph obtained one year after the injury showed that the capitellum ossific nucleus was absent, presumably due to dissolution caused by avascular necrosis (AVN). He also had AVN of the trochlea. Despite these radiographic findings, he was completely asymptomatic. He was

BACKGROUND: About 80 % of all paediatric distal humerus fractures are supracondylar fractures.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: Surgically treated children with supracondylar humeral fractures between 2000-2008 were analysed retrospectively and re-evaluated for function, satisfaction, pain level and with the MAYO elbow performance score (MEPS).
RESULTS: 46 patients were included. Open fractures (2 %) and vessel (0 %) or nerve (4 %) lacerations were rare, additional forearm fractures frequent (15 %). Surgery was done by closed/open reduction and crossed K-wire pinning. Main complications were movement r

BACKGROUND: Treatments for metastatic fracture of the humeral shaft continue to evolve as advances are made in both oncological and operative management. The purposes of this study were to critically evaluate the effectiveness of intercalary endoprostheses in treating metastatic humeral shaft fractures and to clarify the surgical indications for this technique.
METHODS: Sixty-three patients treated surgically for 66 metastatic fractures of the humerus shaft were retrospectively reviewed. Intramedullary nailing (IMN) was performed in 16 lesions, plate fixation (PF) in 33 lesions, and prostheti
