The hydrogen, methane and ammonia biosphere on early Earth.

Current paradigms for the origin and evolutions of life and the environment on early Earth have been based on the premises that carbon dioxi … arth, we suggest that life evolved sometime during 4.50-3.9 Ga under a reducing atmosphere, rich in hydrogen (H2), methane (CH4), and ammonia (NH3), but very poor in CO2, which was similar to today's atmosphere on Jupiter. The ocean water was alkaline (pH = 10 ± 1) and poor in Fe2- and S2-. CH4 and NH3 were the principal sources for carbon nitrogen and ene …

Hydrophobic CuZn Catalyst for CO2 Hydrogenation to Methanol.

The byproduct water produced in the CO2 hydrogenation to methanol process inevitably oxidizes the active Cu0 of Cu-based catalysts, resulting in catalyst deactivation. Here, the CuZn catalyst is prepared by the coprecipitation method and modified with Zr and chitosan to prepare CuZn@Zr and CuZn@ZrC catalysts. All of the catalysts are investigated for the hydrogenation of CO2 to methanol. For the modified CuZn@ZrC catalyst with the carbon layer, the water contact angle remains stable at 122° even after 10 s, while that of the CuZn catalyst decreases rapidly from 124° to 39° within 2 s. The amou…

A Review of Catalysts for Hydrogen Production from Methanol.

Methanol is the simplest C1 oxygenated compound possessing the highest hydrogen-to-carbon ratio and can therefore be used as an effective hydrogen carrier. Furthermore, it can be easily transported by land and sea because it is liquid at room temperature and atmospheric pressure. Methanol can be converted into hydrogen via methanol steam reforming (MSR), aqueous-phase reforming of methanol (APRM), or aqueous methanol dehydrogenation (AMDH). In this review, various catalysts for MSR, APRM, and AMDH are summarized. Highly active and stable catalysts that can operate under low steam-to-methanol r…

Ligand modification for enhanced CO2 hydrogenation to methanol.

The acid route for CO2 hydrogenation to methanol was theoretically investigated using six ligands, including two newly designed structures. N-CYCLO-PP showed the best performance, surpassing that of tdppcy triphos by lowering the key free-energy barrier. Microkinetic simulations confirmed its enhanced activity. A correlation between ΔG‡ and hydride/formate binding energies was identified.

Piezocatalytic in situ production and utilization of hydrogen peroxide.

Piezocatalysis offers a route to convert mechanical energy into hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), potentially reducing the transport, storage and dosing of concentrated oxidants. However, the field remains dominated by material-centred demonstrations and reported production rates, while the functional contribution of piezogenerated H2O2 to downstream reactions remains insufficiently resolved. In this perspective, we examine piezocatalytic H2O2 production and in situ utilization as a coupled catalytic process. We critically discuss the mechanism and reaction pathways of piezocatalytic H2O2 production a…

The Future of Hydrogen Peroxide as a Biomarker for Airway Inflammation.

INTRODUCTION: Leukemic infiltration of the breast is an exceedingly rare clinical entity, often posing a significant diagnostic challenge as it can mimic common benign or malignant breast conditions. The presence of inflammatory features may further obscure the diagnosis, delaying appropriate intervention. CASE PRESENTATION: A 17-year-old female presented with a palpable right breast mass and axillary lymphadenopathy. Initial imaging revealed a 2.8 × 3.7 cm hypoechoic mass with indistinct margins and increased vascularity. Clinical findings were misinterpreted as an infectious or inflammatory

Modeling thermocatalytic systems for CO2 hydrogenation to methanol.

The hydrogenation of CO2 to CH3OH over Cu-based catalysts holds significant potential for advancing carbon sequestration and sustainable chemical processes. While numerous studies have focused on catalyst development, the environmental effects on underlying reaction mechanisms have yet to be fully understood. In this work, we develop a grand potential theory for a comprehensive analysis of CO2 hydrogenation to CH3OH over Cu (111) and Cu (211) surfaces. By integrating electronic and classical density functional calculations to bridge the "pressure gap", the theoretical results revealed that the…

Spherified Pd0.33Ni0.67/BCNT Catalyst for Nitrobenzene Hydrogenation.

A separable bamboo-like carbon nanotube-based catalyst was prepared by the spherfication method using sodium alginate and nickel. The spheres were carbonized and then decorated with palladium nanoparticles before they were tested in nitrobenzene hydrogenation. The test was repeated with five different commonly used solvents (methanol, ethanol, isopropanol, tetrahydrofuran, and acetonitrile). According to the results, polar solvents showed a significantly higher aniline yield than the more apolar solvents and exceptional results were reported for ethanol (~100%). The catalyst was reused two mor…

Genetic insights into the therapeutic potential of hydrogen sulfide.

Hydrogen sulfide (H2S) is a chalcogen-hydrogen gas that can be endogenously synthesized and is the third known bioactive gaseous signalling molecule (gasotransmitter). H2S has diverse physiological roles, such as with cell division, neurotransmission and inflammation. Its involvement with a variety of disease-related processes has spurred growing interest in its therapeutic potential. We propose that variants in genes implicit in regulating cellular H2S availability could help prioritise conditions for exploration of H2S as a therapeutic target. Here, we present the first systematic genetic in…

The Impact of Endogenous Hydrogen Sulfide on Bacterial Resistance.

Infectious diseases, especially sepsis from bacterial infections, significantly threaten global health, with antimicrobial resistance (AMR) complicating treatment and increasing clinical burdens. Antibiotic overuse contributes to AMR by creating selective pressure, reducing the efficacy of traditional therapies, and necessitating new approaches. Endogenous hydrogen sulfide (H2S), a gaseous signaling molecule produced by most bacteria through cystathionine-γ-lyase (CSE), cystathionine-β-synthase (CBS), and 3-mercaptopyruvate sulfurtransferase (3MST), plays a crucial role in bacterial resistance…

The role and mechanism of hydrogen sulfide in liver fibrosis.

Hydrogen sulfide (H2S) is the third new gas signaling molecule in the human body after the discovery of NO and CO. Similar to NO, it has the functions of vasodilation, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and regulation of cell formation. Enzymes that can produce endogenous H2S, such as CSE, CSB, and 3-MST, are common in liver tissues and are important regulatory molecules in the liver. In the development of liver fibrosis, H2S concentration and expression of related enzymes change significantly, which makes it possible to use exogenous gases to treat liver diseases. This review summarizes the role…

Prospects of molecular hydrogen in cancer prevention and treatment.

Gas signaling molecules, including carbon monoxide (CO), nitric oxide (NO), and hydrogen sulfide (H2S), have been shown to have cancer therapeutic potential, pointing to a new direction for cancer treatment. In recent years, a series of studies have confirmed that hydrogen (H2), a weakly reductive gas, also has therapeutic effects on various cancers and can mitigate oxidative stress caused by radiation and chemotherapy, reducing tissue damage and immunosuppression to improve prognosis. Meanwhile, H2 also has immunomodulatory effects, inhibiting T cell exhaustion and enhancing T cell anti-tumor…

Role of hydrogen sulfide in the male reproductive system.

As an important gas signaling molecule, hydrogen sulfide (H2S) affects multiple organ systems, including the nervous, cardiovascular, digestive, and genitourinary, reproductive systems. In particular, H2S not only regulates female reproductive function but also holds great promise in the treatment of male reproductive diseases and disorders, such as erectile dysfunction, prostate cancer, varicocele, and infertility. In this review, we summarize the relationship between H2S and male reproductive organs, including the penis, testis, prostate, vas deferens, and epididymis. As lower urinary tract …
