Aggression toward female partners by at-risk young men: the contribution of male adolescent friendships.

Deviancy training was examined as a risk factor for physical and psychological aggression toward a female partner among boys and young men in the Oregon Youth Study. Hostile talk about women during videotaped male friendship interactions was hypothesized to indicate a process by which aggression toward women is reinforced within male peer networks. Both antisocial behavior and hostile talk were predicted to be associated with later aggression toward a female partner. Prospective developmental models were tested from 9-10 years of age through young adulthood. Findings indicated that the relatio

The development of masculinity: a cross-cultural contribution.

We have examined, using data from a Stone-Age New Guinea culture, two hypotheses regarding the development of masculinity: that a prolonged and too gratifying mother-son symbiosis threatens a boy's chances of becoming masculine and that a boy, to create masculinity, must raise a psychic barrier against the urge to be merged with his mother. The data show the hypothesized forces to be at work in these New Guineans much as in Western society.

Sexual identity of 37 children raised by homosexual or transsexual parents.

The author reports on 37 children who are being raised by female homosexuals or by parents who have changed sex (transsexuals): 21 by female homosexuals, 7 by male-to-female transsexuals, and 9 by female-to-male transsexuals. The children range in age from 3 to 20 years (mean = 9.3) and have lived in the sexually atypical households for 1-16 years (mean = 4.9). Thirty-six of the children report or recall childhood toy, game, clothing, and peer group preferences that are typical for their sex. The 13 older children who report erotic fantasies or overt sexual behaviors are all heterosexually ori

Human Trafficking: A Guide to Identification and Approach for the Emergency Physician.

Human trafficking is a significant human rights problem that is often associated with psychological and physical violence. There is no demographic that is spared from human trafficking. Traffickers maintain control of victims through physical, sexual, and emotional violence and manipulation. Because victims of trafficking seek medical attention for the medical and psychological consequences of assault and neglected health conditions, emergency clinicians are in a unique position to recognize victims and intervene. Evaluation of possible trafficking victims is challenging because patients who h

The intersexed patient.

There are at present two opposing points of view on problems of dealing with the intersexed patient (not the typical homosexual or transvestite) who has clearcut anatomical or biochemical qualities of the opposite sex. The first is that in the growing child or adult coming for treatment, the sex the patient should adopt is the summation of somatic sex. The other is that the sex role should be assigned according to the predominant psychological identification already present.A case history of a middle-aged pseudohermaphrodite, castrated in youth but raised from birth as a female and living thus

Bully victims: psychological and somatic aftermaths.

Bullying is a well-known adversity among school-age children. According to data, approximately 10 percent of US children and adolescents are the victims of frequent bullying by peers. In the aftermath of being bullied, victims may develop a variety of psychological as well as somatic symptoms, some of which may persist into adulthood. Psychological symptoms may include social difficulties, internalizing symptoms, anxiety, depression, suicidal ideation, and eating disorders (i.e., anorexia or bulimia nervosa). Somatic symptoms may include poor appetite, headaches, sleep disturbances, abdominal

The impact of historical loss on Native American college students' mental health: The protective role of ethnic identity.

Culturally relevant stressors and protective factors are vital to understanding and effectively supporting Native American/Alaska Native (NA/AN) college students' mental health and well-being. This study examined the theorized pathways among historical loss, well-being, psychological distress, and the proposed cultural buffer of ethnic identity in the indigenist stress-coping model (ISCM). Cross-sectional data were collected via online survey and analyzed using structural equation modeling. Participants were a national sample of 242 NA/AN college students. Participants were predominantly women

[Mental health in primary care: What's new in the scientific literature in 2025?].

The management of patients with psychological symptoms is common practice for family physicians. Regarding screening, numerous validated tools exist. The most useful are derived from the Patient Health Questionnaire (for anxiety-depressive syndromes) and the Patient Stress Questionnaire (Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test-Concise for alcohol-related problems and General Anxiety Disorder Questionnaire for anxiety disorders). With the aim of improving patient care, better integration of somatic and psychological approaches is essential. Several options are possible, and their respective e

Integrating psychological support in the care of children and adolescents with anorectal malformation or Hirschsprung disease: a ten-year experience.

PURPOSE: Anorectal malformations (ARM) and Hirschsprung disease (HD) pose challenges not only in diagnosis and treatment but also in the psychological well-being of patients and their families. This study aims to report our single-center experience with psychological follow-up in these populations. METHODS: We conducted an observational, retrospective study by reviewing the clinical records of patients enrolled in our dedicated follow-up program who were born between 2009 and 2018. Neurodevelopmental assessments were performed during the first year of life, and psychological evaluations were

Addressing the need for forensic psychological evaluations of asylum seekers: The potential role of the general practitioner.

Asylum seekers who have survived torture and other abuses may experience a wide range of psychological symptoms associated with depression, anxiety, and posttraumatic stress disorder. During the asylum process, attorneys might refer their clients to clinicians who document these psychological sequelae of human rights violations. However, the need for forensic psychological evaluations exceeds the number of mental health clinicians available to provide these assessments. It has been suggested that primary care physicians, professionals who already play essential roles in the identification and

Advances in Aircraft Accident Disaster Victim Identification Using DNA Techniques.

Modern DNA technologies have substantially advanced disaster victim identification. The advances are summarized while stressing privacy, security, and psychological values of victim identification. Identification of victims in fatal aircraft accidents demonstrated the effectiveness of DNA profiling. Initially based on minisatellite or microsatellite loci (i.e., short tandem repeats), DNA analyses are moving toward high-throughput massively parallel sequencing (MPS) that enables analysis of genome-wide single nucleotide polymorphisms, permitting typing of highly degraded samples with increased

Forensic answers to the 14th of July 2016 terrorist attack in Nice.

The terrorist attack of July 14, 2016 in Nice (France) was a devastating event. A man voluntarily drove a truck into a crowd gathered for the fireworks display on the seaside "Promenade des Anglais," plowing pedestrians down over more than 2 km before being shot dead. At the time of this report, a total of 86 casualties and more than 1200 formal complaints for physical and psychological injuries have been recorded. The aim of this work is to describe the forensic management of this event and its immediate aftermath. This paper reaffirms the basic tenets of disaster management: a single place o

Brief Screening Measures Identify Risk for Psychological Difficulties Among Children with Sickle Cell Disease.

Children with sickle cell disease (SCD) experience disproportionately high rates of psychological problems. Our goal was to examine the clinical utility of psychological screening measures to identify children with such problems in medical settings. Caregivers completed screening measures assessing social-emotional problems, ADHD symptoms, executive dysfunction, and health-related quality of life for children with SCD (receiving either chronic blood transfusion or hydroxyurea) and their siblings. Our findings demonstrated that screening measures identified clinically elevated symptoms in child

Latent profile analysis and associated factors of alexithymia among patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.

BACKGROUND: Alexithymia is one of the most common psychological characteristics observed in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and is associated with poorer health outcomes. The negative impact of alexithymia on physical illness is reflected in more severe clinical symptoms and poorer quality of life, which adversely affect clinical outcomes and further increase disease burden, potentially contributing to a cycle of worsening health status. Therefore, timely identification of the psychological characteristics of patients with COPD, along with early psychological support

Transgender identity development as represented by a group of female-to-male transgendered adults.

This article represents work done in the discipline of nursing to raise awareness about the lives and experiences of transgendered persons, who receive little coverage in our nursing textbooks, professional journals, or student clinical experiences. The findings presented here are from a larger qualitative examination of the lives and experiences of a group of 11 transgendered adults that examined four broad areas: transgender identity recognition, acknowledgement, and development; bodily experiences; relationships with others; and health care experiences. The focus of this article is the rele
