Eye movements cannot explain vibration-induced visual motion and motion aftereffect.

Eye movements are thought to account for a number of visual motion illusions involving stationary objects presented against a featureless background or apparent motion of the whole visual field. We tested two different versions of the eye movement account: (a) the retinal slip explanation and (b) the nystagmus-suppression explanation, in particular their ability to account for visual motion experienced during vibration of the neck muscles, and for the visual motion aftereffect following vibration. We vibrated the neck (ventral sternocleidomastoid muscles, bilaterally, or right dorsal muscles) …

Shaping the bodily self: exploring the influence of early attachment experiences on body ownership.

Body ownership is commonly studied using the rubber hand illusion (RHI), an experimental paradigm that induces a temporary feeling of owning a fake hand. Although the illusion demonstrates that multisensory integration is at the core of body ownership, factors like personality traits also modulate the experience and/or intensity of the illusion in a top-down manner. Here, we investigated the role of early attachment experiences as a factor that could influence body ownership. The RHI was administered at baseline and after a short-term activation of the attachment system using the Adult Attachm

Skin Stretch Enhances Illusory Movement in Persons with Lower-Limb Amputation.

Performance of lower limb prostheses is related not only to the mechanical design and the control scheme, but also to the feedback provided to the user. Proprioceptive feedback, which is the sense of position and movement of one's body parts, can improve the utility as well as facilitate the embodiment of the prosthetic device. Recent studies have shown that proprioceptive kinesthetic (movement) sense can be elicited when non-invasively vibrating a muscle tendon proximal to the targeted joint. However, consistency and quality of the elicited sensation depend on several parameters and muscle te

Effects of expertise on football betting.

BACKGROUND: Football (soccer) is one of the most popular sports in the world, including Europe. It is associated with important betting activities. A common belief, widely spread among those who participate in gambling activities, is that knowledge and expertise on football lead to better prediction skills for match outcomes. If unfounded, however, this belief should be considered as a form of "illusion of control." The aim of this study was to examine whether football experts are better than nonexperts at predicting football match scores. METHODS: Two hundred and fifty-eight persons took par

Trait gambling cognitions predict near-miss experiences and persistence in laboratory slot machine gambling.

'Near-miss' outcomes (i.e., unsuccessful outcomes close to the jackpot) have been shown to promote gambling persistence. Although there have been recent advances in understanding the neurobiological responses to gambling near-misses, the psychological mechanisms involved in these events remain unclear. The goal of this study was to explore whether trait-related gambling cognitions (e.g., beliefs that certain skills or rituals may help to win in games of chance) influence behavioural and subjective responses during laboratory gambling. Eighty-four individuals, who gambled at least monthly, perf

A long-term ecstasy-related change in visual perception.

RATIONALE: The present study provides the first evidence of the long-term consequences of ecstasy use on visual processes thought to reflect serotonergic functions in the occipital lobe. Methylenedioxymethamphetamine ("ecstasy") is known to cause lasting changes to the serotonin system in animals, and convergent evidence suggests that similar changes occur in human ecstasy users. Other research suggests that serotonin may be involved in lateral inhibition between orientation sensitive neurons in the occipital lobe, and that disruption to the serotonin system causes an increase in the magnitude

The structural and functional connectivity neural underpinnings of body image.

How we perceive our bodies is fundamental to our self-consciousness and our experience in the world. There are two types of interrelated internal body representations-a subjective experience of the position of a limb in space (body schema) and the subjective experience of the shape and size of the limb (body image). Body schema has been extensively studied, but there is no evidence of the brain structure and network dynamics underpinning body image. Here, we provide the first evidence for the extrastriate body area (EBA), a multisensory brain area, as the structural and functional neural subst

Spectral motion produces an auditory after-effect.

Distortions of perception following prolonged exposure to an unvarying sensory stimulus have been observed since at least the third century BC. The motion after-effect is a familiar experience in which, after a few minutes of viewing objects moving in a single direction, a stationary object appears to move in the opposite direction. Similar after-effects have been observed for many visual stimuli, including tilted lines, colours, stereoscopic depth, curvature, spatial frequency, contrast, rotation and motion in depth. In contrast to the rich variety of visual after-effects reported since the 1

Visual hallucinations.

Hallucinations may be defined as perceptions that occur in the absence of a corresponding stimulus. They can involve any of the five senses, hence visual, auditory, tactile, gustatory and olfactory hallucinations. By contrast, illusions depend upon a misinterpretation of an external stimulus. In this review we outline the causes, and describe the characteristics of various hallucinatory states. This should help in the assessment of a patient presenting with visual hallucinations.

Motion streaks do not influence the perceived position of stationary flashed objects.

In the present study, we investigated whether motion streaks, produced by fast moving dots Geisler 1999, distort the positional map of stationary flashed objects producing the well-known motion-induced position shift illusion (MIPS). The illusion relies on motion-processing mechanisms that induce local distortions in the positional map of the stimulus which is derived by shape-processing mechanisms. To measure the MIPS, two horizontally offset Gaussian blobs, placed above and below a central fixation point, were flashed over two fields of dots moving in opposite directions. Subjects judged the

Effect of stationary objects on illusory forward self-motion induced by a looming display.

It has previously been shown that when a moving and a stationary display are superimposed, illusory self-rotation (circular vection) is induced only when the moving display appears as the background. Three experiments are reported on the extent to which illusory forward self-motion (forward vection) induced by a looming display is inhibited by a superimposed stationary display as a function of the size and location of the stationary display and of the depth between the stationary and looming displays. Results showed that forward vection was controlled by the display that was perceived as the b

Induced motion and oculomotor capture.

Three experiments investigating the basis of induced motion are reported. The proposition that induced motion is based on the visual capture of eye-position information and is therefore a subject-relative, rather than object-relative, motion was explored in the first experiment. Observers made saccades to an invisible auditory stimulus following fixation on a stationary stimulus in which motion was induced. In the remaining two experiments, the question of whether perceived induced motion produces a straight ahead shift was explored. The critical eye movement was directed to apparent straight

Complex muscle vibration patterns to induce gait-like lower-limb movements: proof of concept.

Muscle vibrations can induce motor responses and illusions of complex movements. However, inducing gait-like cyclical movements and illusions requires the application of multiple fast alternating vibrations to lower-limb muscles. The objectives were (1) to test the feasibility of delivering complex vibrations in a time-organized manner and (2) to illustrate the possibility of inducing alternate gait-in-place-like movements using these vibrations. Patterns of vibration, produced by 12 vibrators applied bilaterally on the flexor and extensor muscle groups of the lower limbs, were based on normal…

Did you hear your action? An ecological approach to the senses of ownership and agency.

The Sense of Ownership (SoO) and the Sense of Agency (SoA) are two key components of bodily self-consciousness. In this experiment, we investigated how they are affected by variations in the ecological validity of the moving Rubber Hand Illusion (mRHI) paradigm, which typically include three movement conditions: active congruent, passive congruent, and active incongruent. These conditions were either in a session in which no auditory feedback associated with finger-tapping was eliminated, or in a session in which such a feedback occurred. Since the presence of the auditory feedback more closel

Motion Discrimination and the Motion Aftereffect in Mouse Vision.

Prolonged exposure to motion in one direction often leads to the illusion of motion in the opposite direction for stationary objects. This motion aftereffect likely arises across several visual areas from adaptive changes in the balance of activity and competitive interactions. We examined whether or not the mouse was susceptible to this same illusion to determine whether it would be a suitable model for learning about the neural representation of the motion aftereffect. Under a classical conditioning paradigm, mice learned to lick when presented with motion in one direction and not the opposi

The format of representation for objects in orbit: Composite and internally referenced.

When objects move on circular trajectories that could be described as orbiting, are they represented independently, as when translating linearly, or as parts of a composite system, akin to elements visibly affixed to a rotating structure? This fundamental question matters because representing a satellite as part of a rotating system implies that perception constructs composite representations, including internal references to anchor the system to the external present. We tested this composite representation hypothesis using a tracking task, predicting greater difficulty for rotational compared

Induced motion in depth and the effects of vergence eye movements.

Induced motion is the false impression that physically stationary objects move when in the presence of other objects that really move. In this study, we investigated this motion illusion in the depth dimension. We raised three related questions, as follows: (1) What cues in the stimulus are responsible for this motion illusion in depth? (2) Is the size of this illusion affected by vergence eye movements? And (3) are the effects of eye movements different for motion in depth and for motion in the frontoparallel plane? To answer these questions, we measured the point of subjective stationarity.
