Active Surveillance for Safety Monitoring of XBB.1.5-Containing COVID-19 mRNA Vaccines in Korea.

The emergence of the omicron variant and its sub-lineages has necessitated vaccine updates for coronavirus disease 2019. In September 2023, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved an updated BNT162b2 vaccine targeting the omicron XBB.1.5 variant, which was initiated in Korea in October 2024. This study demonstrates the adverse events reported through active nationwide surveillance after XBB.1.5 vaccination in Korea. Since October 19, 2023, the Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency has conducted daily Short Message Service surveys to collect data on health issues, fever, vaccinatio

COVAD survey 2 long-term outcomes: unmet need and protocol.

Vaccine hesitancy is considered a major barrier to achieving herd immunity against COVID-19. While multiple alternative and synergistic approaches including heterologous vaccination, booster doses, and antiviral drugs have been developed, equitable vaccine uptake remains the foremost strategy to manage pandemic. Although none of the currently approved vaccines are live-attenuated, several reports of disease flares, waning protection, and acute-onset syndromes have emerged as short-term adverse events after vaccination. Hence, scientific literature falls short when discussing potential long-ter

Compulsory vaccination against COVID-19: a legal and ethical perspective on public good versus personal reticence.

Coercive measures to protect public health are controversial, eliciting questions regarding state-patient relationships and conflicts between individual autonomy and public good. This is challenging in a time when respect for patient autonomy has become elevated yet society faces an increasing number of public health challenges, the most recent being the SARS-CoV-2 virus (COVID-19). In that context, there is emphasis on increasing vaccination rates internationally in order to achieve "herd immunity", raising the possibility of compulsory vaccination of populations in the future. Here, we explo

A novel linker-immunodominant site (LIS) vaccine targeting the SARS-CoV-2 spike protein protects against severe COVID-19 in Syrian hamsters.

The Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic is unlikely to abate until sufficient herd immunity is built up by either natural infection or vaccination. We previously identified ten linear immunodominant sites on the SARS-CoV-2 spike protein of which four are located within the RBD. Therefore, we designed two linkerimmunodominant site (LIS) vaccine candidates which are composed of four immunodominant sites within the RBD (RBD-ID) or all the 10 immunodominant sites within the whole spike (S-ID). They were administered by subcutaneous injection and were tested for immunogenicity and in vivo

Enisamium Inhibits SARS-CoV-2 RNA Synthesis.

Pandemic SARS-CoV-2 causes a mild to severe respiratory disease called coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). While control of the SARS-CoV-2 spread partly depends on vaccine-induced or naturally acquired protective herd immunity, antiviral strategies are still needed to manage COVID-19. Enisamium is an inhibitor of influenza A and B viruses in cell culture and clinically approved in countries of the Commonwealth of Independent States. In vitro, enisamium acts through metabolite VR17-04 and inhibits the activity of the influenza A virus RNA polymerase. Here we show that enisamium can inhibit cor

[Vaccination of immunocompromised patients: when and when not to vaccinate].

Immunocompromised individuals are at increased risk of infectious diseases and their complications. The main examples of these are pneumococcal disease and influenza, infections that are both vaccine-preventable. However, responses to vaccination are often impaired in immunocompromised patients. In addition, live-attenuated vaccines, including the measles-mumps-rubella and yellow fever vaccine, cannot be administered to these patients for safety reasons. In view of the decreasing herd immunity caused by a drop in global vaccination coverage, immunocompromised individuals are at increased risk

Role of Oral Rabies Vaccines in the Elimination of Dog-Mediated Human Rabies Deaths.

Domestic dogs are responsible for nearly all the »59,000 global human rabies deaths that occur annually. Numerous control measures have been successful at eliminating dog-mediated human rabies deaths in upper-income countries, including dog population management, parenteral dog vaccination programs, access to human rabies vaccines, and education programs for bite prevention and wound treatment. Implementing these techniques in resource-poor settings can be challenging; perhaps the greatest challenge is maintaining adequate herd immunity in free-roaming dog populations. Oral rabies vaccines hav

Epidemiology of the Zika Virus Outbreak in the Cabo Verde Islands, West Africa.

INTRODUCTION: The Zika virus (ZIKV) outbreak in the island nation of Cabo Verde was of unprecedented magnitude in Africa and the first to be associated with microcephaly in the continent. METHODS: Using a simple mathematical framework we present a first epidemiological assessment of attack and observation rates from 7,580 ZIKV notified cases and 18 microcephaly reports between July 2015 and May 2016. RESULTS: In line with observations from the Americas and elsewhere, the single-wave Cabo Verdean ZIKV epidemic was characterized by a basic reproductive number of 1.85 (95% CI, 1.5 - 2.2), with

Vaccination Litigation: The Need for Rethinking Compensation for Victims of Vaccination Injury.

Opposition to vaccination has a lengthy history dating back to shortly after the discoveries by Jenner in relation to smallpox. In recent years though governments have sought to counter the concerns of anti-vaccinationists in a variety of ways, including legislatively in Australia, in an effort to protect against childhood diseases and to maintain herd immunity. However, cases continue to make their way through the courts where parents oppose the vaccination of their children, often inspired by the views of both registered and unregistered health practitioners, including homeopaths and chiropr

Modeling and predicting the long-term effects of various strategies and objectives of varicella-zoster vaccination campaigns.

BACKGROUND: Susceptible, exposed, infected, and recovered (SEIR) models are increasingly developed and used, but their simplicity contrasts with the wide variety of scenarios before launching vaccination campaigns. METHODS: We investigated the effects of some model-building choices (targets, pace, coverage rate) on the results of SEIR models in the case of vaccination against varicella and herpes zoster. RESULTS: The analysis demonstrated the need for a progressive unvaccinated to vaccinated transition and a dynamic system-equilibrium before vaccination onset. When several doses are consider

[Changing epidemiology of meningococcal disease].

Changing epidemiology of meningococcal disease. The epidemiology of invasive meningococcal disease (IMD) is characterized by a marked variation in incidence and serogroup distribution by geographical region and over time. Immunization programs against serogroups A, C, W, Y in adolescents in North America or mass vaccination campaigns against serogroup A in Sub-Saharan Africa reduced the disease burden in these affected areas. In Europe, immunization against serogroup C in several countries has been successful in reducing incidence through direct and indirect effect. In France, surveillance of

Immunization as a tool to combat antimicrobial resistance.

Vaccines and immunization programs can play a key role in addressing the growing challenge of antimicrobial resistance (AMR). Amongst the high priority vaccines in development are several AMR pathogens, including: Clostridium difficile, Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus pneumoniae, Mycobacterium tuberculosis and Neisseria gonorrhoeae. There is evidence that vaccination can reduce the prevalence of AMR microbes, as demonstrated by both pneumococcal and Haemophilus influenza b vaccines. Research continues on many vaccine-preventable diseases, many of these AMR pathogens, including HIV and uni

Genetic diversity and levels of expression of factor H binding protein among carriage isolates of Neisseria meningitidis.

The prevention of meningococcal disease may be improved by recombinant vaccines such as 4CMenB and rLP2086 that target the factor H binding protein (fHbp), an immunogenic surface component of Neisseria meningitidis present as one of three variants. Whether such vaccines decrease carriage of invasive isolates and thus induce herd immunity is unknown. We analyzed the genetic diversity and levels of expression of fHbp among 268 carriage strains and compare them to those of 467 invasive strains. fhbp gene sequencing showed higher proportions of variants 2 and 3 among carriage isolates (p<0.0001).

Long-term protection after immunization with protein-polysaccharide conjugate vaccines in infancy.

The polysaccharide-encapsulated bacteria, Haemophilus influenzae type b, Neisseria meningitidis and Streptococcus pneumoniae are important causes of invasive bacterial infection in childhood, accounting for most of the cases of bacterial pneumonia and meningitis worldwide. Protein-polysaccharide conjugate vaccines have been developed over the last 20 years and have proven very effective in controlling these infections. Although studies have consistently shown that herd immunity is critical for population protection, long-term individual protection against polysaccharide-encapsulated bacteria a

Varicella.

Varicella-zoster virus, a herpesvirus, causes varicella (chickenpox) and, after endogenous reactivation, herpes zoster (shingles). Varicella, which is recognised by a characteristic vesicular rash, arises mainly in young children, although older individuals can be affected. In immunocompetent patients, symptoms are usually mild to moderate, but an uncomplicated severe case can have more than 1000 lesions and severe constitutional symptoms. Serious complications--including central nervous system involvement, pneumonia, secondary bacterial infections, and death--are sometimes seen. Varicella can

Public fear of vaccination: separating fact from fiction.

During the last two centuries, the world has seen a substantial increase in the number and availability of vaccines for the prevention of infectious disease. Smallpox vaccine remains the most celebrated vaccine-related achievement in human history, but worldwide reductions in many other diseases including measles, mumps, rubella, polio, diphtheria, and whooping cough (Bordetella pertussis) also illustrate the power of vaccination in controlling outbreaks of contagious diseases. Ironically, as advances in vaccination successfully limit disease outbreaks, the impact that these infectious agents

Different seroprevalences of antibodies against Neisseria meningitidis serogroup A and Haemophilus influenzae type b in Sudanese and Swedish children.

Sampling of sera from 202 Sudanese and 124 Swedish children 1-14 years of age was conducted at the end of the 1980s presenting an opportunity to compare the seroprevalence of anti-Neisseria meningitidis (MC) serogroup A antibodies in an area immediately before outbreak of an epidemic (Sudan 1988) with a low endemic area (Sweden). An ELISA antibody assay was developed for detection of antibodies against capsular polysaccharide of MC serogroup A and Haemophilus influenzae type b (Hib). Serum antibody against MC serogroup A was found significantly more frequently in Sudanese than in Swedish child

[Botulism in cattle].

Botulism is an intoxication caused by ingestion of feed or water contaminated with the toxin of Clostridium botulinum. In cattle, intoxication usually results from the ingestion of feed containing preformed type C or D toxin, either in feed which has been contaminated with toxin-containing carcasses or in feed in which there has been primary multiplication of C. botulinum and toxin production. The initial signs of botulism are progressive difficulty in chewing and swallowing, caused by paralysis of the tongue and muscles of mastication. This results in slow prehension and chewing of feed, wate
