Lassa fever is a major threat in Western Africa. The large number of people living at risk for this disease calls for the development of a vaccine against Lassa virus (LASV). We generated live-attenuated LASV vaccines based on measles virus and Mopeia virus platforms and expressing different LASV antigens, with the aim to develop a vaccine able to protect after a single shot. Three cases of tetanus in Singapore are presented. One local resident had cephalic tetanus most likely secondary to otitis media and the other two, residents from surrounding Asean countries, had generalised tetanus. Wolf's isotopic response describes the occurrence of a dermatologic condition at the site of a prior healed unrelated condition. Our report details a case of varicella occurring as a secondary condition at the site of a prior immunization reaction; herpesvirus infection has not been reported as a secondary condition in cases of Wolf's isotopic response before. Current hypotheses favor the involvement of neurohormonal modulation of local immunity in response to various forms of injury as a model for explaining these phenomena.

The involvement of inhibin in the decline of the secondary surge of follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) was investigated in the rat. Sera obtained during a dengue-2 epidemic from individuals with primary or secondary group B arbovirus infections contained cross-reactive antibody against several viruses in this group. Hemagglutination-inhibition antibody titers of the immunoglobulin M fractions from these sera revealed a rise in antibody specific for dengue-2. The acute and convalescent sera in over half of the secondary infection group also had low-level unchanging immunoglobulin M antibody titers to yellow fever which implicated yellow fever immunization as the primary infection.

Foot-and-mouth disease virus (FMDV) remains a challenge for cloven-hooved animals. The currently licensed FMDV vaccines induce neutralizing antibody (NAb)-mediated protection but show defects in the early protection. Dendritic cell (DC) vaccines have shown great potency in inducing rapid T-cell immunity in humans and mice. Whether DC vaccination could enhance early protection against FMDV has not been elaborately explored in domestic pigs. In this study, we employed DC vaccination as an experimental approach to study the roles of cellular immunity in the early protection against FMDV in pigs.

Immunization status to the three types of poliovirus, to tetanus, diphtheria and measles was evaluated in a Gypsy population living at a Roman camp. C57BL/6J mice rendered hypersensitive to Blastomyces dermatitidis were protected from the lethal effects of a blastomyces infection. This protection was observed following a lethal intraperitoneal challenge with viable cells 15 days after subcutaneous inoculation with 3.9 x 10(4) viable cells. Delayed hypersensitivity was induced in C57 mice by two injections of Merthiolate-killed cells in adjuvant or by a single injection of viable cells. Development of hypersensitivity was determined at appropriate intervals by footpad injection with killed yeast cells.

INTRODUCTION: Little is known about the completeness and timely administration of recommended standard immunizations in Germany. The goal of this study was to determine compliance with official standard immunization recommendations in adolescents attending secondary schools in the city of Erlangen, Germany.
