Accelerating Animal Replacement: How Universities Can Lead - Results of a One-Day Expert Workshop in Zurich, Switzerland.

This report is a result of an interdisciplinary workshop held at the Collegium Helveticum in Zurich, Switzerland in February 2024, in which ideas for accelerating NAMs (New Approach Methodologies) in Swiss universities were shared and discussed. Due to regional differences in university organisation and funding structures, not all recommendations will be transferable to all regions worldwide. All participants were qualified to contribute to the discussion, due to their knowledge and experience of the Three Rs, in particular with regard to their implementation. The workshop participants believe

Diagnostic safety and quality optimization in sepsis study protocol.

BACKGROUND: Sepsis ranks among the "Big Three" conditions most prone to harmful diagnostic errors. Despite its high prevalence and severity, health systems lack effective and contextually tailored strategies to optimize diagnostic accuracy for sepsis. OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this study is to understand factors related to high sepsis diagnostic accuracy using principles and tools of safety and implementation science. METHODS: This is a multi-site study involving 20 hospitals across four states in the United States. The primary objectives are to (1) describe hospital-level variability and u…

Adaptation and Response in Drylands: A Dryland Research Agenda and Campaign Strategy.

Dryland ecosystems cover 41% of Earth's land surfaces, account for 44% of cultivated lands and 60% of food sources, and make large contributions to the global water and carbon cycles. However, these ecosystems are experiencing unprecedented extremes including heatwaves, floods, and droughts as well as hotter temperatures and often declining water resource availability. These ecosystems are some of the most challenging to monitor given their high temporal variability with rapid response to their environment as well as vast spatial variability with intermixing of different plant species and life

Determinants of implementing fall risk screening for older adults in primary care settings: protocol for a scoping review.

INTRODUCTION: Falls are a major global health issue among older adults, leading to substantial physical, psychological and economic burdens. Fall risk screening is essential for early identification of high-risk individuals and enables targeted preventive interventions. Primary care, as the first point of contact in healthcare, is well-positioned to implement screening due to its accessibility and broad population coverage. However, existing reviews have examined fall prevention in primary care broadly, while evidence on the factors influencing the implementation of routine fall risk screening

Validated strategies for screening for eating disorders in primary health care: A scoping review with a focus on adolescents and adults.

Eating disorders are serious, complex, and potentially chronic psychiatric conditions that affect millions of people worldwide. Primary health care plays a strategic role in the early identification and referral, helping to reduce complications, mortality, and health system burden. This scoping review aimed to map the available evidence on validated strategies for screening for eating disorders in adolescents and adults in primary care. The study followed the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic reviews and Meta-Analyses extension for Scoping Reviews, with a protocol registered in the Open

[The Constituent and Second Sessions of the General Meeting of the USSR Academy of Medical Sciences (1944-1945) and tasks of the Soviet medicine in post-war period].

The article presents the materials of the 1st and 2nd sessions of the General Meeting of the USSR Academy of Medical Sciences (1944 and 1945). The comparative analysis of main tasks set at these sessions for the Soviet medical science and practical public health is implemented. It is demonstrated that if the 1st session of the USSR Academy of Medical Sciences (December 20-22, 1944) was devoted, in addition to organizational tasks, to formulation of main directions in development of fundamental (morphology, physiology, biochemistry, etc.), and practical (surgery, therapy, obstetrics, etc.) medi

Current knowledge in pharmacogenomics and precision medicine: perspectives of the PGRN global PGx committee on improving drug therapies in underrepresented ethnic populations.

A precision medicine strategy is likely to be more impactful, when pharmacogenomics (PGx) guided selection of drugs and dosage wherever applicable is implemented across the globe. In regions where resources are disproportionately distributed, PGx implementation in routine clinical care can play a critical role in ensuring the optimal use of limited healthcare infrastructure. At present, PGx data from the majority of the distinct ethnic populations across Asia, Africa, and South America is limited. While international consortia, working groups, and scientific bodies have made significant contri

Organization-Level Factors Associated with Changes in the Delivery of the Five A's for Smoking Cessation following the Implementation of a Comprehensive Tobacco-Free Workplace Program within Substance Use Treatment Centers.

Many adults with a substance use disorder smoke cigarettes. However, tobacco use is not commonly addressed in substance use treatment center … centers whose personnel were already better informed and trained. Findings from this study advance implementation science and contribute information relevant to reducing the research-to-practice translational gap in tobacco control for a patient group that suffers tobacco-related health disparities.

Determinants, implementation strategies, and mechanisms of the 4T Program.

The Teamwork, Targets, and Technology for Tight Glycemia (4T) Program has demonstrated effectiveness in early continuous glucose monitor use with remote patient monitoring among three diverse cohorts of youth with new onset type 1 diabetes (T1D, n = 451). Advancing research translation in addiction and pain: A portfolio analysis of the NIH HEAL initiative.

BACKGROUND: To date, the NIH Helping to End Addiction Long-term (HEAL) Initiative has funded over 1,000 projects that aim to identify new therapeutic targets for pain and substance use disorder (SUD), develop nonpharmacological strategies for pain management, and improve overdose and addiction treatment across settings. This study conducted a portfolio analysis of HEAL's research to assess opportunities to advance translation and implementation. METHODS: HEAL projects (FY 2018-2022) were classified into early (T0-T1) and later (T2-T4) translational stages. Eleven coders used a 54-item data co

Scientific breakthroughs in the COVID-19 era: embracing Ernst Mayr towards an epistemic renewal of Medicine.

The present study examines the development of medical science during the COVID-19 pandemic in light of Ernst Mayr's critique of Thomas Kuhn's philosophy of scientific revolutions. Kuhn's model, which emphasizes paradigm shifts and disruptive changes in scientific practice, contrasts with the evolutionary and cumulative nature of biological sciences, as argued by Mayr. Revisiting Mayr's critique, we question the applicability of Kuhn's model to the COVID-19 pandemic by using vaccine development as a case study. We argue that the rapid advancements in vaccine technology, particularly mRNA-based
