The experiences of carers looking after people with Parkinson's disease who exhibit impulsive and compulsive behaviours: An exploratory qualitative study.

AIM: To understand the experiences of carers who were confronted by the development of impulsive and compulsive behaviours. BACKGROUND: Impulsive and compulsive behaviours (ICBs) are a serious complication in Parkinson's disease (PD) strongly associated with dopamine replacement therapy used to treat patients. These behaviours comprise abnormal activities such as pathological gambling, binge eating, compulsive shopping and hypersexuality. These behaviours place a considerable burden on patients and on their carers and families. DESIGN: An exploratory qualitative study. METHODS: Using a conv

Imaging impulse control disorders in Parkinson's disease and their relationship to addiction.

Established substance addictions and impulse control disorders (ICDs) such as pathological gambling share similar underlying neurobiology, and recent data extends these commonalities to the risk factors that increase an individuals' susceptibility to develop such behaviours. In Parkinson's disease (PD), impulse control disorders (ICDs) are increasingly recognised to develop after patients begin dopamine (DA) restoration therapy, in particular DA agonists. In both the PD and non-PD population, more impulsive individuals are at increased risk for impulse control disorders. Here, we review the ne

A pilot study examining hemomania behaviors in psychiatry outpatients engaged with nonsuicidal self-injury.

BACKGROUND: This study aims to conduct the first-ever evaluation of our previously proposed behaviors of "hemomania" in individuals engaged with nonsuicidal self-injury (NSSI). METHODS: The study encompassed 130 outpatients engaged with NSSI who applied at the psychiatry outpatient clinic. NSSI behaviors were assessed using the Inventory of Statements About Self-Injury, while psychiatric diagnoses were evaluated using the Structured Clinical Interview for DSM-5 Disorders-Clinician Version. Subsequently, participants completed the Depression Anxiety Stress Scale-21 and Short Form of Barratt Im

A Genetic Model of Impulsivity, Vulnerability to Drug Abuse and Schizophrenia-Relevant Symptoms With Translational Potential: The Roman High- vs. Low-Avoidance Rats.

The bidirectional selective breeding of Roman high- (RHA) and low-avoidance (RLA) rats for respectively rapid vs. poor acquisition of active avoidant behavior has generated two lines/strains that differ markedly in terms of emotional reactivity, with RHA rats being less fearful than their RLA counterparts. Many other behavioral traits have been segregated along the selection procedure; thus, compared with their RLA counterparts, RHA rats behave as proactive copers in the face of aversive conditions, display a robust sensation/novelty seeking (SNS) profile, and show high impulsivity and an inna

[Impulsivity in sexual offenders--new ideas or back to basics?].

Despite the fact that the group of sexual offenders remains a population which is still difficult to study, the results of current research are considered novel and interesting. Surprisingly, the very old descriptions applying to paraphilia, which is considered to be one of the reasons of sexual offences, appear to be accurate, especially in the context of similarities between impulsivity and pathologic sexual behaviors. Notably, the nomenclature concerning impulsivity enables a specific and reasonable description of behaviors associated with sexual offences. Moreover, the results of research

Role of emotion dysregulation in the relationship between childhood abuse and probable PTSD in a sample of substance abusers.

This study examined associations among childhood abuse, emotion dysregulation, and probable posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) within a sample of 93 substance use disorder (SUD) patients in residential treatment. SUD patients with probable PTSD (vs. non-PTSD) reported (a) greater severity of childhood sexual, physical, and emotional abuse and (b) significantly higher levels of overall emotion dysregulation and the specific dimensions of difficulties engaging in goal-directed behavior when upset, difficulties controlling impulsive behaviors when distressed, limited access to effective emotion…

Na+, K+-ATPase inhibition causes hyperactivity and impulsivity in mice via dopamine D2 receptor-mediated mechanism.

Hyperactivity and impulsivity are common symptoms in several psychiatric disorders. Although dysfunction of Na+, K+-ATPase has been reported to be associated with the psychiatric disorders, it is not clear whether inhibition of Na+, K+-ATPase causes behavioral effects, including hyperactivity and impulsivity, in mice. Here, we evaluated the effect of intracerebroventricular (icv) injection of ouabain, an inhibitor of Na+, K+-ATPase, on hyperactivity and impulsivity in mice. At seven days after icv injection, ouabain-injected mice displayed the increase in the distance traveled in the open fiel

Bank Voles Show More Impulsivity in IntelliCage Learning Tasks than Wood Mice.

Impulsivity is a personality trait of healthy individuals, but in extreme forms common in mental disorders. Previous behavioral testing of wild-caught bank voles and wood mice suggested impulsiveness in bank voles. Here, we compared behavioral performance of bank voles and wood mice in tests for response control in the IntelliCage. In the reaction time task, a test similar to the five-choice serial-reaction time task (5CSRTT), bank voles made more premature responses. Impulsivity in the reaction time task was associated with smaller medial habenular nucleus in bank voles. Additional tests reve

The efficacy of a training that combines activities on working memory and metacognition: Transfer and maintenance effects in children with ADHD and typical development.

Introduction: It has been demonstrated that children with attention deficit and hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) have impairments in working memory (WM), and particularly its visuospatial component, responsible for academic underachievement. Furthermore, children with ADHD have difficulty in metacognition, and consequently use inappropriate strategies to control attention and impulsive behavior. The aim of the present study was to devise a training that combined individual exercises on visuospatial WM and group metacognitive activities capable of helping children with ADHD to ameliorate their per…

Preference for Safe Over Risky Options in Binge Eating.

Binge eating has been usually viewed as a loss of control and an impulsive behavior. But, little is known about the actual behavior of binging patients (prevalently women) in terms of basic decision-making under risk or under uncertainty. In healthy women, stressful cues bias behavior for safer options, raising the question of whether food cues that are perceived as threatening by binging patients may modulate patients' behaviors towards safer options. A cross-sectional study was conducted with binging patients (20 bulimia nervosa (BN) and 23 anorexia nervosa binging (ANB) patients) and two co…

Fear conditioning, persistence of disruptive behavior and psychopathic traits: an fMRI study.

Children diagnosed with Disruptive Behavior Disorders (DBD), especially those with psychopathic traits, are at risk of developing persistent and severe antisocial behavior. Deficient fear conditioning may be a key mechanism underlying persistence, and has been associated with altered regional brain function in adult antisocial populations. In this study, we investigated the associations between the neural correlates of fear conditioning, persistence of childhood-onset DBD during adolescence and psychopathic traits. From a cohort of children arrested before the age of 12 years, participants who

Naloxone reverses disinhibitory/aggressive behavior in 5,7-DHT-lesioned rats; involvement of GABA(A) receptor blockade?

Effective medical treatment for impulsive aggression and several impulse control disorders is needed. Disinhibited, impulsive behavior of e.g. murderers, arsonists, suicidal patients, and patients suffering from antisocial personality or substance abuse disorders has been associated with signs of a deficiency in brain serotonin (5-HT) systems. Depletion of brain 5-HT consistently produces disinhibition and aggression also in experimental animals. The present series of experiments using a modified Vogel's conflict test indicates that the disinhibitory behavior of 5-HT-lesioned rats can be rever…

A NEW DANGER OF BEHAVIORAL ADDICTION: CRYPTOCURRENCY WITH MOBILE INVESTING.

BACKGROUND: Cryptocurrencies are a popular investment tool today. However, some studies highlight the investing behavior of cryptocurrencies similar to pathological gambling. Investing behavior becomes risky when it is not based on proper and adequate analysis and carries the possibility of big losses as well as big gains. For this reason, we aimed to determine the potential risky investor profile by age, gender, personality traits and impulsivity levels. SUBJECTS AND METHODS: Six hundred and fifty-four cryptocurrencies investors (529 was male, 125 was female, their mean age was 35.6 ± 9.0) p

Opioid antagonists in the treatment of impulse-control disorders.

BACKGROUND: Symptoms of impulse-control disorders are generally refractory to psychotherapeutic or pharmacologic treatments. Recent study results suggest that opioid antagonists may reduce human urges, one of the core symptoms of impulse-control disorders. The author discusses the rationale for and the potential utility of the opioid antagonists in the treatment of impulse-control disorders. METHOD: Work by preclinical and clinical investigators on the subject of motivation and its contextually relevant behavior is reviewed. The review includes the pharmacologic modulation of the motivation o

Involvement of a stress-responsive orbito-striatal projection in impulsive action in male rats.

BACKGROUND: Motor impulsivity is a symptom shared by several psychiatric disorders. Stress exacerbates impulsivity, but the neurocircuits involved are unknown. We have shown that the orbitofrontal cortex (OFC) is activated during a rodent motor impulsivity task and that chronic unpredictable stress (CUS) increases premature responding. In this study, we examine the role of the OFC projection to dorsal medial striatum (DMS) in motor control, and test whether this pathway mediates the effects of stress on impulsive action. METHODS: Motor impulsivity was measured with the 1-choice serial reactio
