Residues of organophosphorus insecticides (diazinon, methyl parathion, fenitrothion, malathion, and parathion) were determined in 13 different vegetable matrixes by headspace solid-phase microextraction performed with a polydimethyl-siloxane fiber (100 microm). Determination was carried out by gas chromatography with a nitrogen-phosphorus detector. Limits of detection and quantification were < 0.005 and 0.017 mg/kg, respectively; thus, the limits of maximum residue levels (MRLs) required by European regulations can be verified without difficulty. A supramolecular approach for potential detection of SO2 is presented, which is based on the "old" donor-acceptor chemistry between SO2 and amines and includes an indicator-displacement assay. When amines were added to Zn-tetraphenylporphyrin 1 in CHCl3, the solution changed from red to dark green. Thiol esters and organoindium reagents undergo palladium-catalyzed cross-coupling under mild conditions to give ketones in moderate to excellent yields. Aryl and primary/secondary alkyl organoindium reagents can be used as coupling partners. This method has two advantages over the cross-coupling of thiol esters with boron and tin reagents: (1) no added copper reagent is required to mediate the reaction and (2) for the case of alkyl transfer, no added base is required to activate organoindium reagents for cross-coupling as is required for the coupling of alkyl boron reagents with thiol esters.

The objective of this study was to compare 2 methods for the determination of tilmicosin residues in bovine liver samples. Three laboratories participated in the comparison of the 2 methods. The first method was described in a New Animal Drug Application (NADA 140-929), and the second was a modification of that method in which hexane was substituted for carbon tetrachloride in one cleanup step. Activation volumes (delta V++) have been determined for several reactions of peroxynitrite using the stopped-flow technique. Spontaneous decomposition of ONOOH to NO3- in 0.15 M phosphate, pH 4.5, gave delta V++ = 6.0 +/- 0.7 and 14 +/- 1.0 cm3 mol-1 in the presence of 53 microM and 5 mM nitrite ion, respectively. A method for the quantitative determination of the opium alkaloids morphine, codeine, thebaine, noscapine and papaverine in crude opium and in drug preparations based on non-aqueous capillary electrophoresis has been developed. The non-aqueous mode provides high separation selectivity and new possibilities for regulating the selectivity in capillary electrophoresis. The nature of the organic solvent, the acidity of the electrolytes as well as the temperature surrounding the capillary exhibit a major influence on the separation selectivity.

A rapid screening technique for the identification and quantitation of some barbiturates in plasma is reported. The method employs a one-step extraction at pH 5.8 into an organic phase, separation of compounds by gas chromatography with a wide-bore (0.75-mm i.d.) fused-silica capillary column connected to a direct injection kit, and nitrogen-phosphorus detection. Using female Acanthocheilonema viteae we have investigated the bioreduction of the tetrazolium reagent XTT (2,3-bis(2-methoxy-4-nitro-sulphonyl)-5-[(phenylamino) carbonyl]-2H-tetrazolium hydroxide). Unlike the formazan formed by other tetrazolium salts, that derived from XTT readily diffuses out of A. viteae in vitro. A liquid chromatographic method for the multiresidue determination of tetracyclines (TCs) in feeds is described. The levels of quantitation were 10 ppm each for tetracycline-HCl (TC), oxytetracycline (OTC), and chlortetracycline-HCl (CTC); the detection limit was 40 ppb for each.
