BACKGROUND: There are only preliminary studies examining the associations of postnatal antibiotic exposure with food allergy in childhood, and the effect of antibiotic exposure in utero has not been resolved. Thus, we aimed to investigate the effect of prenatal and postnatal antibiotic exposure on the risk of food allergy in childhood.
METHODS: Using the nationwide birth cohort in South Korea, all 3,163,206 infants (pairing mother; n = 2,322,735) born in South Korea between 2010 and 2017 were included in the analysis. The primary outcome was the diagnosis of food allergy, and the observation

BACKGROUND: Hen's egg is the most common cause of food allergy in early childhood.
OBJECTIVE: We investigated the efficacy and safety of early hen's egg introduction at age 4 to 6 months to prevent hen's egg allergy in the general population.
METHODS: This randomized, placebo-controlled trial included 4- to 6-month-old infants who were not sensitized against hen's egg, as determined based on specific serum antibodies (IgE). These infants were randomized to receive either verum (egg white powder) or placebo (rice powder) added to the first weaning food 3 times a week under a concurrent egg-fr

The pediatrician is faced with evaluating a panoply of skin rashes, a subset of which may be induced by food allergy. Acute urticaria is a common manifestation of an allergic skin response to food, but food is rarely a cause of chronic urticaria. Approximately one third of infants/children with moderate to severe atopic dermatitis have food allergy. Although diagnosis of acute urticaria provoked by a food may be evident from a straightforward history and confirmed by diagnostic tests to detect food-specific IgE antibody, determination of the role of food allergy in patients with atopic dermati

BACKGROUND: Household food insecurity has been associated with pregnancy complications and poorer birth outcomes in the United States and with maternal mental disorders in the United Kingdom, but there has been little investigation of the effects of food insecurity during this life stage in Canada.
OBJECTIVES: Our objective was to examine the relationship between the food insecurity status of women during pregnancy and maternal and birth outcomes and health in infancy in Canada.
METHODS: We drew on data from 1998 women in Ontario, Canada, whose food insecurity was assessed using the Househol

Background/Objectives: The second highest prevalence of childhood malnutrition in the world is found in Nigeria. Infant and young child feeding practices (IYCF) are crucial predictors of the nutritional status of children. This study evaluated the effects of utilization of the BabyThrive app versus control on IYCF knowledge of Nigerian teenage mothers. Methods: A parallel, randomized controlled trial was conducted with 194 low-income teenage mother-child (0-2 years) dyads in Nigeria. Outcome measures included knowledge concerning food type for an infant, exclusive breastfeeding, complementary

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: The objectives of the present study were to describe food and nutrient intakes in children aged 9 and 18 months, and to assess tracking of intakes between these two ages.
SUBJECTS/METHODS: Participants were 177 children of first-time mothers from the control arm of the Melbourne Infant Feeding Activity and Nutrition Trial (InFANT) Program. Dietary intake was collected at 9 and 18 months using three 24 h diet recalls. Tracking was assessed for food and nutrient intakes using logistic regression analysis and estimating partial correlation coefficients, respectively.

BACKGROUND: Age-appropriate breastfeeding and adequate complementary feeding play a crucial role in reducing under-5 mortality rates, malnutrition, and mortality worldwide. Given the high prevalence of adolescent pregnancy in Uganda, we aimed to assess the competence of adolescent mothers in infant and young child feeding (IYCF) using data from the 2016 Uganda Demographic Health Survey.
METHOD: Our sample comprised the last children aged 6-23 months of mothers aged 15-29 years, totaling 2594 mother-infant pairs; 402 were aged 15-19 years, 1,388 were aged 20-29 years with their first delivery

The impact of breastfeeding on respiratory health is uncertain, particularly when the mother has asthma. We examined the association of breastfeeding and wheezing in the first year of life.We studied 2773 infants from the Canadian Healthy Infant Longitudinal Development (CHILD) birth cohort. Caregivers reported on infant feeding and wheezing episodes at 3, 6 and 12 months. Breastfeeding was classified as exclusive, partial (supplemented with formula or complementary foods) or none.Overall, 21% of mothers had asthma, 46% breastfed for at least 12 months and 21% of infants experienced wheezing.

We examined the development of skin test reactivity and clinical allergen sensitivity in infancy. Seventy-eight infants of atopic parents were skin prick tested every 4 mo from 4 to 16 mo and an additional 57 of these infants were tested at 20 mo. Wheal diameters were recorded for histamine (1 mg/ml) and specific allergen reactions by use of cow's milk, egg albumen, wheat, and Dermatophagoides pteronyssinus. The histamine mean wheal diameter was significantly lower at 4 and 8 mo compared to the older infants. Infants at 20 mo also had significantly smaller wheals than adult controls. Histamine

BACKGROUND: Maternal beliefs towards COVID-19 vaccine safety may be associated with infant feeding practice and postpartum depression (PPD). Since there is a paucity of studies, this study aims to identify associations of COVID-19-related cognitive factors (e.g., COVID-19-vaccination-related belief and COVID-19-related knowledge and attitude) with infant feeding practices and their associations with PPD during the COVID-19 pandemic in Thai postpartum mothers.
METHODS: A cross-sectional online survey was conducted among 840 postpartum mothers whose infants were less than or equal to 6 months o

Early infant feeding and swallowing are complex motor processes involving numerous muscles in coordination, e.g. the orofacial muscles as well as the muscles of the pharynx, larynx and esophagus. The newborn's reflexive drinking develops into the ability to ingest pureed complementary food as infancy progresses. Finally, in the last part of the first year of life, a differentiated eating, chewing and swallowing process develops allowing the voluntary intake of different foods of the family diet. The dietary schedule for the first year of life, which describes the recommended nutrition of infan

Although there has been increasing data on pediatric anaphylaxis, information about anaphylaxis in the 1st year of life is scarce. This study provides detailed information on clinical signs and symptoms of anaphylaxis in the 1st year of life. A retrospective review was performed of our pediatric allergy database between 2007 and 2011. Children who met the diagnostic criteria of anaphylaxis were included. They were categorized as "infant" if they were ≤12 months of age at the time of anaphylactic reaction and "children" if >12 months. There were 104 patients (60 male and 44 female subjects) who

BACKGROUND: Family histories of atopy, as well as histories of atopic dermatitis and food allergy, are important risk factors for an infant to have asthma. Although atopic sensitization appears to contribute to the development of asthma, it is unclear when the airways become involved with the atopic process and whether airway function relates to the atopic characteristics of the infant.
OBJECTIVE: We sought to evaluate whether atopic infants without prior episodes of wheezing have increased expired nitric oxide (eNO) levels and heightened airway reactivity.
METHODS: Infants with eczema were

Olfaction and gustation are critical for the enjoyment of food but also have important metabolic roles, initiating the cephalic phase response that sets in train secretion of hormones important for metabolism and digestion before any food is actually ingested. Smell and taste receptors are functional in the fetus and there is evidence for antenatal learning of odours. Despite enteral nutrition and metabolism being major issues in the care of very preterm infants, often little consideration is given to the potential role of smell and taste in supporting these processes, or in the role they may

Breast milk (BM) is the only source of iodine and bioactive compounds that influence growth and development in infants. The content of BM may be influenced by maternal body mass index (BMI). The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of maternal weight on BM and cord blood iodine concentrations, growth-related hormones, infant anthropometric measurements. A total of 84 mother-infant pairs participated. Levels of leptin, adiponectin and insulin-like growth factor-I (IGF-I) in postnatal BM and cord blood were analysed by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA), iodine by Sandell-Kolth

BACKGROUND: Infancy is an important period for the promotion of healthy eating, diet and weight. However little is known about how best to engage caregivers of infants in healthy eating programs. This is particularly true for caregivers, infants and children from socioeconomically disadvantaged backgrounds who experience greater rates of overweight and obesity yet are more challenging to reach in health programs. Behaviour change interventions targeting parent-infant feeding interactions are more likely to be effective if assumptions about what needs to change for the target behaviours to occu

This study investigated whether the introduction of allergenic foods in infancy is associated with atopic dermatitis (AD) in early childhood. Information regarding parental allergic histories, the introduction of six possible allergenic foods (fruits, egg white, egg yolk, fish, shellfish, and peanuts), and physician-diagnosed AD was obtained using age-specific questionnaires (0-2 years). Immunoglobulin E, specific to 20 food allergens, was also quantified at 12 months of age. Logistic regression analyses were used to determine the association between individual food introduction and the outcom

Background: Stunting is a pervasive issue in low‑ and middle‑income countries, reflecting biological processes that adversely affect childhood cognitive development and increase the risk of chronic disease in adulthood. Nutritional intake is an important causative factor in stunting. Understanding the nutritional intake patterns of children with stunting can help inform nutrition program development. Objective: To characterize breastfeeding and dietary patterns from a clinical cohort of children with stunting in Guatemala and identify factors associated with linear growth. Methods: We included
