Postneonatal mortality of severely small for gestational age extremely low birth weight infants.

BACKGROUND: Infants born with weights below the 10th percentile of the expected birth weight for gestational age, defined as small for gestational age (SGA), have an increased risk of neonatal mortality and prematurity-related complications. However, the relationship between SGA and postneonatal (28 days to <1 year) mortality among extremely low birth weight infants (ELBWIs) remains uncertain. Hence, this study aimed to investigate the association between birth weight percentiles and postneonatal mortality in ELBWIs. METHODS: A cohort of ELBWIs with a gestational age greater than 23 weeks who

Rates and predictors of mortality of very low birthweight infants in three Nigerian tertiary hospitals.

AIM: We aimed to describe in-hospital mortality, and its predictors, in very low birthweight (VLBW) infants managed in tertiary centres in a low- to middle-income country. METHODS: This was a retrospective cohort study of VLBW infants (birthweight 500 to 1500 grams) admitted within 72 h of life to the neonatal intensive care units (NICUs) of three tertiary centres in Nigeria from July 2017 to March 2021. We describe in-hospital mortality rates, causes and when they died. The independent predictors of in-hospital mortality were determined using multivariate logistic analysis. RESULTS: Of the

Risk Factors for Recoarctation and Mortality in Infants Submitted to Aortic Coarctation Repair: A Systematic Review.

Aortic coarctation is a common congenital heart defect that often requires correction at a young age. Currently, success is defined by the achievement of a durable repair with low morbidity and mortality. We sought to systematically review the literature on risk factors for recoarctation and mortality in infants submitted to aortic arch coarctation repair under 1 year of age. PubMed and Scopus were searched for studies reporting risk factors for recoarctation and mortality from January 1989 to August 2019. Among the 1038 retrieved articles, 18 met the inclusion criteria, with a total of 2891 p

Nutritional interventions to reduce rates of infection, necrotizing enterocolitis and mortality in very preterm infants.

Observational studies demonstrating reduced rates of infections, necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC), and mortality in preterm infants fed their own mother's milk, as opposed to formula, have prompted endeavors to achieve similar effects with the right choice of food and food additives. In a systematic review of meta-analyses and randomized controlled trials (RCTs), we considered nutritional interventions aimed at reducing the rates of infections, NEC, or mortality in very preterm infants. The overall effects of particular interventions were presented as risk ratios with 95% confidence intervals.

Antibiotics at the time of removal of central venous catheter to reduce morbidity and mortality in newborn infants.

BACKGROUND: Late-onset sepsis is associated with increased rates of mortality and morbidity in newborn infants, in addition to poorer long-term developmental outcomes and increased length of stay and hospital costs. Central line-associated blood stream infection (CLABSI) is the most common cause of late-onset sepsis in hospitalised infants, and prevention of CLABSI is a key objective in neonatal care. Increased frequency of CLABSI around the time of removal of central venous catheters (CVCs) has been reported, and use of antibiotics at the time of removal may reduce the incidence and impact of

Effect of deregionalized care on mortality in very low-birth-weight infants with necrotizing enterocolitis.

IMPORTANCE: There has been a significant expansion in the number of low-level and midlevel neonatal intensive care units (NICUs) in recent decades. Infants with necrotizing enterocolitis represent a high-risk subgroup of the very low-birth-weight (VLBW) (<1500 g) population that would benefit from focused regionalization. OBJECTIVES: To describe the current trend toward deregionalization and to test the hypothesis that infants with necrotizing enterocolitis represent a particularly high-risk subgroup of the VLBW population that would benefit from early identification, increased intensity of e

Birth weight and McGoon Index predict mortality in newborn infants with congenital diaphragmatic hernia.

BACKGROUND: Despite improvements in clinical management, mortality of congenital diaphragmatic hernia (CDH) remains high. Early prediction of mortality risk helps in comparing strategies and/or performances of different centers. Birth weight (BW), Apgar Score at 5 minutes, and modified McGoon Index (MGI) calculated by the ratio between the diameters of pulmonary arteries and the descending aorta have been used to determine mortality of CDH. AIM: The purpose of this study is to evaluate the relationship between early detectable variables and survival in newborns with CDH intubated at birth, ma

[Risk factors for mortality in very low birth weight infants with respiratory distress syndrome].

INTRODUCTION: In the last few years the life expectancy of very low birth weight (VLBW) infants has improved. When these patients have respiratory distress syndrome, it is difficult to know with any certainty which factors have the greatest influence on mortality. The aim of this study was to determine which variables, among a series, have the greatest influence on mortality from a multivariate perspective. PATIENTS AND METHODS: A sample of 209 VLBW infants born over a long period (15 years and 7 months) was studied. The following variables were analyzed: date of birth, degree of respiratory

[Mortality risk factors in premature infants with respiratory distress syndrome treated by mechanical ventilation].

INTRODUCTION: Respiratory distress syndrome (RDS) is the most common cause of respiratory failure and requirement for mechanical ventilation (MV) of newborns. RDS is also common cause of mortality and severe morbidity in premature infants. In developing countries, despite facilities for respiratory care of newborn infants, RDS mortality rate and percentage of complications still remain high in comparison to the developed countries. Survival rates of RDS infants requiring MV ranged from 25% in those newborns with birth weight <1000 grams up to 53% in those with birth weight >2500 grams. There h

Factors affecting short-term mortality in very low birth weight infants in Japan.

No epidemiological surveys have examined risk factors related to the death of very low birth weight infants (VLBWIs) in Japan. The objectives of this study were to examine the death rate and fatalities related to complications among VLBWIs, and to analyze factors possibly determining the death of VLBWIs. The subjects of this study were 811 VLBWIs admitted to the Neonatal Care Center of Niigata City General Hospital between April 1987 and March 2003. We obtained information on gender, birth weight, gestational age, Apgar scores, single/multiple pregnancy, postnatal transfer, mode of delivery, c

[Mortality and morbidity of small premature infants (<1,500 g) in relation to presentation and delivery mode].

It is generally recommended in the literature that small premature babies with an expected weight of < 1500 g or < 32 WOP be delivered by cesarean section. The development of some of these small babies from the uterine muscle is very time-consuming and rough. For this reason, we have established the mode of the delivery at the Nuremberg Women's Hospital on the basis of the criteria which also applies to the delivery of mature term babies irrespective of the gestational age and irrespective of their presentation. Of a total number of 10542 babies delivered, 219 babies < 1500 g in weight (2.07%)
