A dimensional link between gain-loss economic preferences and psychopathology.

Human decision-makers differ in how they value and trade off reward, risk, and information when evaluating future gains and losses, and these preferences are central to well-being. However, how multi-attribute economic valuation relates to psychopathology remains unclear. Here, 1,954 individuals completed a transdiagnostic symptom battery and a multi-attribute decision-making task that independently manipulated expected reward, reward uncertainty, and non-instrumental information under matched gain and loss contexts. On average, when choosing among gains, participants preferred larger rewards,

Avoidance and endurance coping after mild traumatic brain injury are associated with disability outcomes.

Objective: Fear-avoidance and endurance behavior are well-established maladaptive coping styles in several chronic health conditions. There is also emerging evidence that both fear-avoidance and endurance coping are associated with poor outcome from mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI). The current study sought to characterize the early trajectories of avoidance and endurance behavior and confirm their association with disability outcomes. Method: Adults with mTBI (N = 88) completed measures of avoidance, endurance, and postconcussive symptoms at clinic intake (M = 40.2 days since injury). Avoid

Visual attention towards virtual humans as a function of spatial distance and emotional expression: an eye-tracking study.

During social interactions, the way people regulate the space between each other (i.e., the interpersonal distance) reflects the type and quality of the relationship existing between the interactants. Shorter interpersonal distances are for intimate relationships; larger interpersonal distances are for formal social interactions. Thus, we spontaneously choose the appropriate interpersonal distance to feel comfortable and avoid distress. Moreover, when interacting with other people or the environment, the space surrounding the body acts as a protective buffer against potential threats: this spa

What are parents' perspectives on psychological empowerment in the MMR vaccination decision? A focus group study.

OBJECTIVES: Most developed countries do not have compulsory immunisation requirements, but instead issue recommendations. Although parents are expected to make an informed, autonomous (ie, empowered) decision regarding their children's vaccinations, there is no evidence about how parents' interpret this demand nor on the latitude of their decision-making. The goal of this study is to gain insights from parents residing in a low measles-mumps-rubella (MMR) uptake area on what constitutes feelings of empowerment in the decision they have to make on their child's MMR vaccination. DESIGN: A quali

Latent profile analysis of mindfulness and experiential avoidance associated with social media use disorder.

BACKGROUND: This study aimed to examine mindfulness and experiential avoidance as profile indicators associated with social media use disorder through an individual-centered approach. Therefore, we examined how mindfulness and experiential avoidance co-occur with social media use disorder within a theoretically informed framework. METHODS: The study data were obtained from 826 participants, 348 (42%) male and 478 (58%) female. The participants' ages varied from 18 to 25, with a mean age of 21.3 (df = 1.8). The associations between the variables were investigated using correlation analysis. La

Outcomes of Cardiac Catheterization in Patients With Atrial Fibrillation on Anticoagulation in Contemporary in Practice: An Analysis of the ORBIT II Registry.

BACKGROUND: Patients with atrial fibrillation on oral anticoagulation (OAC) undergoing cardiac catheterization face risks for embolic and bleeding events, yet information on strategies to mitigate these risks in contemporary practice is lacking. METHODS: We aimed to describe the clinical/procedural characteristics of a contemporary cohort of patients with atrial fibrillation on OAC who underwent cardiac catheterization. Use of bleeding avoidance strategies and bridging therapy were described and outcomes including death, stroke, and major bleeding at 30 days and 1 year were compared by OAC ty

Identifying and profiling prearrival characteristics of avoidable emergency department visits transported by paramedics: a cohort study using linked prehospital and hospital data.

BACKGROUND: Increasing demand and crowding in emergency departments (EDs) remain persistent challenges for healthcare systems worldwide. A portion of these visits is avoidable, indicating they could have been effectively managed in non-ED care settings. There has been increased attention on paramedics redirecting avoidable visits to community-based care before ED transport. However, limited evidence exists to identify which patients might be suitable for non-ED care models, particularly based on prehospital clinical presentations. This study aimed to examine the patient characteristics associa

Clinical assessment of prosthetic valve function.

The advent of high-quality ultrasound technology has made the assessment of prosthetic valve function quicker, easier, and more accurate than ever before. By using cross-sectional imaging, colour flow mapping, and spectral Doppler techniques from both the precordium and the oesophagus, it is possible to assess a prosthetic valve fully. Cardiac catheterization with its attendant risks can be avoided. Echocardiography gives detailed morphological information, and it can be used for routine serial follow-up of individual patients. Using the patient as his or her own control avoids the problems ca

The overlooked majority of hikikomori: Latent profiles reveal a discrepancy between social anxiety and life functioning.

Hikikomori is increasingly recognized as heterogeneous; however, how behavioral functions relate to clinically important targets (e.g., functional impairment and social-evaluative anxiety) remains unclear. We identified latent hikikomori profiles by integrating behavioral topography and functions and characterized their clinical profiles. The study recruited Japanese adults aged 18-59 using an online panel, comprising 200 participants each in the hikikomori and control groups, respectively. Latent profile analysis was conducted using three functional indicators from the Hikikomori Functional A

Patterns of post-traumatic stress symptoms in mild traumatic brain injury and their relationship with outcomes: a latent profile analysis.

INTRODUCTION: Post-traumatic stress symptoms (PTSS) are known to contribute to postconcussion symptoms and functional status following mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI). Identifying symptom cluster profiles provide an opportunity to better understand PTSS and their influence on these outcomes. In this study, latent profiles of PTSS following mTBI were identified, and their association with mTBI outcomes was examined. The predictive role of demographic and injury related variables on profile membership was also explored. METHOD: Adults (N = 252) completed self report measures of PTSS and mTBI

Cortex-restricted deletion of Foxp1 impairs barrel formation and induces aberrant tactile responses in a mouse model of autism.

BACKGROUND: Many children and young people with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) display touch defensiveness or avoidance (hypersensitivity), or engage in sensory seeking by touching people or objects (hyposensitivity). Abnormal sensory responses have also been noticed in mice lacking ASD-associated genes. Tactile sensory information is normally processed by the somatosensory system that travels along the thalamus to the primary somatosensory cortex. The neurobiology behind tactile sensory abnormalities, however, is not fully understood. METHODS: We employed cortex-specific Foxp1 knockout (Foxp

Patient-selected media and knowledge of risk to kidneys of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs.

OBJECTIVES: Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) can cause community-acquired acute kidney injury, especially in high-risk populations. Both the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) medication guide and over-the-counter labeling vaguely describe kidney risks of NSAIDs and do not provide information for patients to evaluate their risk for kidney problems. The purpose of this study was to use a mobile application to evaluate the impact of patient choice of media delivering NSAID avoidance education on patient knowledge about kidney risks associated with NSAIDs. DESIGN: Prospective c

Effects of methyl mercury, mercuric sulfide and cinnabar on active avoidance responses, Na+/K+-ATPase activities and tissue mercury contents in rats.

This study compared the neurobehavioral toxicities of three mercurial compounds: methyl mercury (MeHg) which is soluble and organic. and mercuric sulfide (HgS) and cinnabar (naturally occurring HgS), which are insoluble and inorganic. Cinnabar, a Chinese mineral medicine, is still used as a sedative in some Asian countries, but there is relatively little toxicological information about it. These mercurial compounds were administered intraperitoneally (MeHg, 2 mg/ kg) or orally (HgS and cinnabar, 1.0 g/kg) to male rats once every day for 13 consecutive days with assays conducted during or after
