Public perception of Tourette syndrome on YouTube.

We sought to determine public perception surrounding Tourette syndrome through viewers' responses to videos on YouTube. The top 20 videos on YouTube for search terms Tourette's, Tourette's syndrome, Tourette syndrome and tics were selected. The portrayal of Tourette syndrome was assessed as positive, negative, or neutral. Top 10 comments for each video were graded as "sympathetic," "neutral," or "derogatory." A total of 14 970 hits were obtained and 41 videos were retained, with an average of 590 113 views (1369 to 13 747 069) and 1761 comments (0 to 35 241). Twenty-two percent of videos retai

Synergy advances parasite taxonomy and systematics: an example from elasmobranch tapeworms.

The synergism facilitated by a series of recent developments has conspired to catalyze rapid advancements in the taxonomy and systematics of elasmobranch tapeworms. These developments are: (1) increased interest in global biodiversity; (2) globalization-facilitated communication; (3) enhanced microscopic and digital technologies; (4) availability of web-based taxonomic resources; (5) ease of use and low cost of molecular techniques and (6) the impressive repertoire of available phylogenetic methods. As a consequence, an estimation of global elasmobranch tapeworm diversity is now within our gra

A content analysis of mass media sources in relation to the MMR vaccine scare.

In light of the mass media coverage that the MMR (measles, mumps and rubella) vaccine received as a result of questions raised about its safety, a content analysis of mass media articles about the MMR vaccine was undertaken. The analysis examined 227 articles published in five different information sources in a 2 month period. The analysis looked at 94 content-based variables and the key attributes of these articles including word count and date of publication. Descriptive and analytical statistics relating to both article content and format were produced. The analysis showed that the content

[The situation of rare skin diseases in Germany].

In Germany a disease is considered to be "rare" when its prevalence is less than 5:10,000. However, as far as genetic skin diseases are concerned, they are often much more uncommon with a prevalence in the range of 1:100,000. Currently considerable deficits prevail in both diagnosis and treatment of rare skin diseases. Driven by scientific research on rare skin diseases and benefiting from start-up grants of the Federal Ministry for Education and Research (BMBF), the following networks for rare skin diseases were formed: a) epidermolysis bullosa, b) ichthyosis and related keratinisation disord

[The infectious disease epidemiology research network--a bridge between science and public health service. The example of the network for foodborne infections].

In order to respond to emerging food borne diseases, a new data-driven approach guided by epidemiologic and microbiologic data has been developed in Germany. An interdisciplinary network of scientists at the national, regional and local levels conducted surveillance and epidemiologic research of foodborne pathogens (Shiga toxin-producing Escherichia coli (STEC), Salmonella and Campylobacter). The objectives of the network include (1) determining incidence and distribution of STEC and Salmonella, (2) assessing the importance of typing systems for Campylobacter, (3) determining risk factors for

INTRODUCTION: The outbreak of Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) have changed into a global crisis. Psychologically, this process of alteration can lead to feelings of fear, insecurity, and anxiety. This fear and anxiety can be caused by a variety of factors. However, due to the lack of extensive studies at this time, there are little data on these conditions related to COVID-19. Therefore, in this narrative review, we have tried to identify the most important possible causes of anxiety and fear due to this disease, based on logical shreds of evidence. Community sensitization and decision-making for trial participation: A mixed-methods study from The Gambia.

BACKGROUND: Ensuring individual free and informed decision-making for research participation is challenging. It is thought that preliminarily informing communities through 'community sensitization' procedures may improve individual decision-making. This study set out to assess the relevance of community sensitization for individual decision-making in research participation in rural Gambia. METHODS: This anthropological mixed-methods study triangulated qualitative methods and quantitative survey methods in the context of an observational study and a clinical trial on malaria carried out by the

What are the information needs and concerns of individuals with Polycystic Kidney Disease? Results of an online survey using Facebook and social listening analysis.

BACKGROUND: Polycystic Kidney Disease (PKD) is a hereditary disorder that has no cure and can result in end stage kidney failure. Searching for health information online and via social media is a common phenomenon in many medical conditions. However, no recent studies have documented the information needs, online behaviours, and concerns of people with PKD. The aim of this study was to explore the information needs of individuals with PKD and their carers by documenting (i) the information needs (ii) online information health seeking behaviours (iii) the perceived challenges of living with PKD

Analysis of Orthopaedic Research Produced During the Wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.

BACKGROUND: Military orthopaedic surgeons have published a substantial amount of original research based on our care of combat-wounded service members and related studies during the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. However, to our knowledge, the influence of this body of work has not been evaluated bibliometrically, and doing so is important to determine the modern impact of combat casualty research in the wider medical community. QUESTIONS/PURPOSES: We sought to identify the 20 most commonly cited works from military surgeons published during the Iraq and Afghanistan conflicts and analyze them

Misinterpretation of Hereditary Breast Cancer Risk and Its Association with Information Sharing Motives among Women at Low Likelihood of Carrying a BRCA1/2 Mutation.

PURPOSE: In this brief report, we ask whether women's interpretation of breast cancer risk based on their low likelihood of carrying a BRCA1/2 mutation is associated with their information-sharing behavior, and whether misinterpretation is associated with motives for sharing the result. METHODS: Women in mammography clinics who completed a brief family history assessment and deemed to be at low likelihood of carrying a BRCA1/2 mutation were asked to complete a 1-time online survey between June 2016 and January 2017. RESULTS: One-third (44/148) of women shared their family history screen resu

Exploring the Information Shared on Social Media With Parents of Deaf and Hard of Hearing Children.

This qualitative textual analysis explores the information shared on a social media group for parents of deaf and hard of hearing (DHH) children. The authors sought to investigate the type of information parents of DHH children are seeking and receiving from a community on social media related to their child's development. A thematic analysis was conducted on one month's worth of content from the group, and six major themes emerged from participants' posts and threaded comments. These emerging themes and accompanying subthemes provide insight into the immediate needs of parents of DHH children

Dissemination of health content through social networks: YouTube and opioid use disorders.

INTRODUCTION: Most Americans now access social media platforms, including YouTube, to obtain health information. However, few studies have evaluated the quality of YouTube content related to opioid use disorder (OUD), including medications for OUD (MOUD; buprenorphine) and harm reduction resources (e.g., naloxone). The purpose of this cross-sectional analysis was to assess the quality, accuracy, and reliability of MOUD and harm reduction-related video content available on YouTube. Disinformation and Epidemics: Anticipating the Next Phase of Biowarfare.

While biological warfare has classically been considered a threat requiring the presence of a distinct biological agent, we argue that in light of the rise of state-sponsored online disinformation campaigns we are approaching a fifth phase of biowarfare with a "cyber-bio" framing. By examining the rise of measles cases following disinformation campaigns connected to the US 2016 presidential elections, the rise of disinformation in the current novel coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic, and the impact of misinformation on public health interventions during the 2014-2016 West Africa and 2019-2020 D
