Dynamic Associations Between Public Risk Perception and Behavioral Responses on Weibo During the 2023 Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei Extreme Rainfall Event.

Social media has become an important platform for the public to obtain information, express emotions, seek help, and participate in collaborative responses during major natural disasters. However, existing studies have mainly focused on the intensity of disaster-related discussions, emotional evolution, or patterns of information dissemination, while systematic examination remains limited regarding how public risk perception is associated with specific behavioral responses and whether these associations vary across disaster stages, degrees of regional impact, and user types. Using the stimulus

Dynamic associations between help-seeking and suicidal ideation across family conflict contexts following psychiatric hospitalization.

Adolescents are at elevated risk for recurrent suicidal thoughts and behaviors (STB) following discharge from psychiatric hospitalization, yet little is known about how help-seeking behaviors unfold dynamically during this high-risk transition period. Prior research suggests that family conflict may function both as a direct risk factor for STB and as an interpersonal context associated with how adolescents respond during periods of suicidal distress. Clarifying when adolescents are most likely to seek support, and how family context shapes these dynamic associations, is critical for informing

Infodemiology of autoimmune encephalitis, autoimmune seizures, and autoimmune epilepsy: An analysis of online search behavior using Google Trends.

BACKGROUND: Patients and their caregivers, including clinicians and educators, use web-based search engines to access healthcare-related information from the internet. Online search behavior analysis has been used to obtain insights on health information demand. OBJECTIVES: We aimed to describe the online search behavior for autoimmune encephalitis, autoimmune seizures, and autoimmune encephalitis (AE) worldwide over time through the analysis of search volumes made on Google. METHODS: In this infodemiological study, we retrieved search volume indices for the keyword "autoimmune encephalitis

Revision of the fear of cancer recurrence cognitive and emotional model by Lee-Jones et al with women with breast cancer.

BACKGROUND: Fear of cancer recurrence (FCR) is among the top unmet concerns reported by breast cancer survivors. Despite the sizable literature on FCR, few theoretical models have been empirically tested. One of the most cited is the FCR model. AIM: This study seeks to understand the nature of women's cognitive and emotional issues from FCR using specific guidance from the model by Lee-Jones and to provide suggestions for modifications to the model based on empirical results from the reported experiences of women living with breast cancer. METHODS AND RESULTS: A qualitative descriptive study

Exploring Junior Residents' Barriers in Mobilizing Social Capital and Their Coping: A Qualitative Ego Social Network Study.

BACKGROUND: Residents rely on social support from team members to navigate patient care, while also facing challenges integrating into the healthcare team. Although prior research has explored help-seeking behavior, little attention has been given to how residents overcome barriers to mobilizing social resources. This study explores how, in daily clinical practice, do residents perceive and respond to barriers in accessing and making use of social capital during challenging situations? METHODS: We used a mixed-methods social network approach. Twenty-nine junior residents from various specialt

How to leverage social media to build confidence in COVID-19 vaccines: findings and lessons learned from nationwide campaigns in four countries.

Vaccine hesitancy remains a global health challenge, undermining gains in routine immunization coverage and the uptake of COVID-19 vaccines worldwide. Effective, responsive health communication is needed to counter 'infodemics' and strengthen public trust in vaccination. Evidence on how to design effective digital campaigns to strengthen vaccine demand is limited, particularly in low- and middle-income countries. Results from this four-country study demonstrate a process for the design and randomized controlled testing of evidence-based, context-driven persuasive messaging to strengthen vaccin

Higher Education Students and Trauma: PTSD, Treatment Gap and Help-Seeking Challenges.

Exposure to potentially traumatic events (PTEs) is common in students and might lead to post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Nevertheless, population-based information about PTSD in students is lacking in the Netherlands. Therefore, we aimed to determine the prevalence of PTEs, PTSD, help-seeking behavior, treatment history, and help-seeking barriers in a population-based sample of Dutch students. A total of 270 students (Mage = 20.7 years, SDage = 3.5 years) completed online self-report questionnaires, including the Life Events Checklist for DSM-5 (LEC-5), the PTSD checklist for DSM-5 (PCL-

A tale of two veterans: homeless vs domiciled veterans presenting to a psychiatric urgent care clinic.

BACKGROUND: The relationship between homelessness among veterans and mental illness and suicidality has not been clearly defined. To further examine this relationship, we compared rates of mental illness and suicidality among homeless and domiciled veterans seeking urgent psychiatric care at a US Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) facility. METHODS: Information was collected by survey from 482 consecutive veterans seeking care at the Psychiatric Emergency Clinic (PEC) at the VA San Diego Healthcare System. A total of 73 homeless veterans were designated the homeless group and 73 domiciled ve

Behaviors suggestive of pain: the perceptions and veterinary-related decisions of cat guardians in the USA.

OBJECTIVES: The aim of the study was to assess cat guardians' concern levels and veterinary care decisions pertaining to behaviors that might signify pain before and after receiving brief pain-related educational information. The secondary aims were to evaluate cat guardians' perceptions of the usefulness of a modified version of the Colorado State University Feline Acute Pain Scale (CSU-FAPS) in identifying their cat's pain level, determining if they should take their cat to the veterinarian and describing their cat's pain to their veterinarian. METHODS: Participants were recruited through P

Suicidal phenotypes associated with family history of suicidal behavior and early traumatic experiences.

BACKGROUND: Family history of suicidal behavior and personal history of childhood trauma are risk factors for suicidal behaviors. We hypothesize that subjects with any of these risk factors will show differential features and that subjects with both of them will display more severe phenotypes. METHODS: This study compares three groups of suicide attempters (n=878): subjects with a family history of suicidal behavior and a personal history of early traumatic experiences, subjects with a family history of suicidal behavior or a personal history of early traumatic experiences, and subjects with

Exploring the Roles of Interpersonal Conversations and Received Social Support in the Persuasiveness of Messages Informed by the Extended Parallel Process Model.

Message design and message effects theories have been criticized for ignoring the influences of interpersonal, social, and contextual factors. To address this gap, the current study explores how interpersonal conversations and received social support may influence the persuasiveness of messages informed by the extended parallel process model (EPPM). In a longitudinal experiment, participants (n = 750) were randomly assigned to watch an EPPM-informed video that promotes healthy sleep behaviors or a control video. We then encouraged half of the participants to initiate conversations and seek soc

Effects of Workplace Variables on Workers Intentions to Misuse Prescription Opioids.

OBJECTIVE: Workers in industries with high rates of opioid dispensing as well as those with high rates of non-fatal work-related injuries are at greater risk for opioid misuse, which can lead to addiction, overdose, or death. METHODS: Using secondary cross-sectional data collected from 856 healthcare workers, this pilot study examines a conceptual model for workers' intentions to seek out prescription opioids and intentions to use opioids at higher doses over longer periods. RESULTS: Results showed significant protective effects of beliefs, injunctive and subjective norms, and behavioral con

Balancing acts: lateral hypothalamic circuits coordinating feeding, anxiety, and social interactions.

Survival requires organisms to continuously balance competing motivational drives, including the need to acquire energy, avoid threat, and navigate complex social environments. Feeding, anxiety-related behaviors, and social interactions are therefore tightly interconnected, yet the neural mechanisms that coordinate these domains remain incompletely understood. The lateral hypothalamus (LH) is uniquely positioned to integrate internal metabolic signals, external environmental cues, and socially relevant information, and to translate this integrated state into appropriate behavioral responses. Excitement-Seeking Gambling in Adolescents: Health Correlates and Gambling-Related Attitudes and Behaviors.

Motivational characteristics such as excitement-seeking are key components of models of addiction, including problem gambling. Previous studies have established associations between excitement-seeking and problem gambling in youth. However, these studies have employed dimensional psychological assessments which are unlikely to be routinely administered. Other approaches to conceptualize excitement-seeking could be of value. In the present study, we employed a single question (What are the reasons that you gamble?) to identify adolescents who reported excitement-seeking motivation for gambling.

"You can only take so much, and it took everything out of me": coping strategies used by parents of children with cancer.

OBJECTIVE: This study qualitatively assesses the coping strategies of parents who care for a child with cancer. METHOD: Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 28 French and English families who had had a child diagnosed with cancer in the last ten years in two Eastern Canadian provinces. Interviews were transcribed verbatim and coded with a focus on parental coping strategies. RESULTS: Using coping behaviors as described and categorized in the Family Adjustment and Adaptation Response (FAAR) model as a foundation, we found that families used a variety of appraisal-, emotion-, and pro

Care-seeking and health insurance among pregnancy-related deaths: A population-based study in Jember District, East Java Province, Indonesia.

BACKGROUND: Despite the increased access to facility-based delivery in Indonesia, the country's maternal mortality remains unacceptably high. Reducing maternal mortality requires a good understanding of the care-seeking pathways for maternal complications, especially with the government moving toward universal health coverage. This study examined care-seeking practices and health insurance in instances of pregnancy-related deaths in Jember District, East Java, Indonesia. METHODS: This was a community-based cross-sectional study to identify all pregnancy-related deaths in the district from Jan

Bronchiectasis Information and Education: a randomised, controlled feasibility trial.

BACKGROUND: There has been comparatively little patient information about bronchiectasis, a chronic lung disease with rising prevalence. Patients want more information, which could improve their understanding and self-management. A novel information resource meeting identified needs has been co-developed in prior work. We sought to establish the feasibility of conducting a multi-centre randomised controlled trial to determine effect of the information resource on understanding, self-management and health outcomes. METHODS/DESIGN: We conducted an unblinded, single-centre, randomised controlled
