History of instruments and technology in the clinical neurosciences: 2. Selected historical sources.

Sources of information on the history of instruments and technology in the clinical neurosciences, particularly before 1900, are unfortunately arcane and fragmented. Therefore, a description of some of the resources available is provided to assist historians who wish to pursue studies of neurologic or neurosurgical instruments or technologies. Historical primary sources concerning medical instrumentation and technology are much richer than those provided through the standard sources used in medical historiography and include advertisements, patents, testimonials of physicians, museum collectio

Perinatal health monitoring in Europe: results from the EURO-PERISTAT project.

Data about deliveries, births, mothers and newborn babies are collected extensively to monitor the health and care of mothers and babies during pregnancy, delivery and the post-partum period, but there is no common approach in Europe. We analysed the problems related to using the European data for international comparisons of perinatal health. We made an inventory of relevant data sources in 25 European Union (EU) member states and Norway, and collected perinatal data using a previously defined indicator list. The main sources were civil registration based on birth and death certificates, medi

Availability of secondary healthcare data for conducting pharmacoepidemiology studies in Colombia: A systematic review.

Real-world evidence (RWE) is emerging as a fundamental component of the post-marketing evaluation of medicinal products. Even though the focus on RWE studies has increased in Colombia, the availability of secondary data sources to perform this type of research is not well documented. Thus, we aimed at identifying and characterizing secondary data sources available in Colombia. We performed a systematic literature review on PubMed, EMBASE, and VHL using a combination of controlled vocabulary and keywords for the concepts of electronic health records, epidemiologic studies and Colombia. Inventing a herbal tradition: The complex roots of the current popularity of Epilobium angustifolium in Eastern Europe.

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: Currently various scientific and popular sources provide a wide spectrum of ethnopharmacological information on many plants, yet the sources of that information, as well as the information itself, are often not clear, potentially resulting in the erroneous use of plants among lay people or even in official medicine. Our field studies in seven countries on the Eastern edge of Europe have revealed an unusual increase in the medicinal use of Epilobium angustifolium L., especially in Estonia, where the majority of uses were specifically related to "men's problems".
