Cocaine use and overdose mortality in the United States: Evidence from two national data sources, 2002-2018.

BACKGROUND: Cocaine-involved overdose mortality has recently risen in the United States (US), yet it is unclear to what extent patterns in cocaine-involved overdose mortality parallel patterns in cocaine use. This study: examined time trends (2002-2018) in past-year cocaine use and cocaine-involved overdose mortality in the US; and compared demographics and drug involvement of adults who reported past-year cocaine use versus adults who died of a cocaine-involved overdose. METHODS: Data from two sources were utilized: (1) the National Survey on Drug Use and Health (n = 1,334 adults self-report

Automated 2-D cephalometric analysis of X-ray by image registration approach based on least square approximator.

This paper presents a new approach to cephalometric x-ray landmark localization. This approach is based on extracting features from face profile of the lateral skull x-ray. The extracted side profile is then segmented based on knowledge of known local facial structures. Once the face profile is properly segmented, nine perceptually significant landmarks (fiducial points) on the face are registered based on a local maximum curvature computation. These fiducial points are used for point-by-point correspondence to find the transformation coefficients of the control points between two images of a

Data consistency based translational motion artifact reduction in fan-beam CT.

A basic assumption in the classic computed tomography (CT) theory is that an object remains stationary in an entire scan. In biomedical CT/micro-CT, this assumption is often violated. To produce high-resolution images, such as for our recently proposed clinical micro-CT (CMCT) prototype, it is desirable to develop a precise motion estimation and image reconstruction scheme. In this paper, we first extend the Helgason-Ludwig consistency condition (HLCC) from parallel-beam to fan-beam geometry when an object is subject to a translation. Then, we propose a novel method to estimate the motion para

Severe remote memory loss with minimal anterograde amnesia: a clinical note.

We describe a patient who presented with apparent human Klüver-Bucy syndrome. After pharmacological treatment, his problems gradually resolved, with the exception of some unconcern about this present situation, a mild naming and word list generation deficit, a severe remote memory loss and, in comparison, a minimal anterograde memory disturbance. He has been able to relearn certain details of his personal past. These relearned memories are independent of a sense of personal intimacy. The "relearned memory" was frequently associated with a memory of how and when the information had been reacqui

Extended temporal gradient for the retrograde and anterograde amnesia produced by ibotenate entorhinal cortex lesions in mice.

Effects of ibotenic entorhinal cortex (EC) lesions on both retrograde and anterograde amnesia in mice were assessed using two-choice discrimination tasks learned at different intervals before surgery in two eight-arm radial mazes. The results indicated that EC-lesioned mice were severely impaired in postoperative retention of discrimination problems learned 3 d or 2 weeks prior to surgery, but showed no deficit on problems learned between 4, and up to 6 weeks before surgery, as compared to sham-operated controls. When trained on a novel two-choice discrimination problem (not acquired preoperat

Dynamics of hippocampal and cortical activation during consolidation of a nonspatial memory.

Observations of temporally graded retrograde amnesia after hippocampal damage suggest that the hippocampal region plays a critical, time-limited role in memory consolidation. However, these observations do not indicate where permanent memory is stored, nor do they clarify whether the hippocampus normally remains involved in a nonessential way. Evidence from multiple neural imaging studies indicate the time-limited role of the hippocampus and suggest that the anterior cingulate cortex is a critical storage site of different types of long-term memory. However, each of the previous studies examin

The precuneus as a central node in declarative memory retrieval.

Both, the hippocampal formation and the neocortex are contributing to declarative memory, but their functional specialization remains unclear. We investigated the differential contribution of both memory systems during free recall of word lists. In total, 21 women and 17 men studied the same list but with the help of different encoding associations. Participants associated the words either sequentially with the previous word on the list, with spatial locations on a well-known path, or with unique autobiographical events. After intensive rehearsal, subjects recalled the words during functional

Reactivation and consolidation of memory traces during post-encoding rest across the adult lifespan.

Episodic memory is a critical cognitive function that enables the encoding, storage, and retrieval of new information. Memory consolidation, a key stage of episodic memory, stabilizes this newly encoded information into long-lasting brain "storage." Studies using fMRI to investigate post-encoding awake rest holds promise to shed light on early, immediate consolidation mechanisms. Here, we review fMRI studies during episodic memory to document common methods to investigate post-encoding consolidation, such as multivoxel pattern analysis (MVPA) and functional connectivity, and the current state

Multimodal Large Language Model With Knowledge Retrieval Using Flowchart Embedding for Forming Follow-Up Recommendations for Pancreatic Cystic Lesions.

BACKGROUND. The American College of Radiology (ACR) Incidental Findings Committee (IFC) algorithm provides guidance for pancreatic cystic lesion (PCL) management. Its implementation using plain-text large language model (LLM) solutions is challenging given that key components include multimodal data (e.g., figures and tables). OBJECTIVE. The purpose of the study is to evaluate a multimodal LLM approach incorporating knowledge retrieval using flowchart embedding for forming follow-up recommendations for PCL management. METHODS. This retrospective study included patients who underwent abdominal

The Impact of Groin Surgery during Childhood on the Incidence of Inguinal Hernia Repair and Its Postoperative Complications in Adult Life.

BACKGROUND: Pediatric inguinal hernia, hydrocele, and cryptorchidism are common congenital anomalies affecting children, and require surgical intervention in some cases. The association between surgical treatment of these conditions and acquired inguinal hernia later in life is poorly understood. The aim of this cohort study was to examine the effect of groin surgery during childhood on the incidence and surgical outcome of inguinal hernia repair in adult life. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Data from the Swedish Inpatient Register and the Swedish Hernia Register were cross-linked using the patient p

Dementia: A risk factor for burns in the elderly.

BACKGROUND: Older people are disproportionately at risk of burn and have a high risk of dementia; however the impact of dementia on risk of burn is unknown. METHOD: Linked hospitalisation and death records for individuals aged 65 years and older admitted to a NSW hospital for a burn over the ten year period 2003-2012 were analysed. Demographic and burn characteristics and health outcomes were compared for people with and without dementia. Incidence rates were calculated per 100,000 population and negative binomial regression was used to examine temporal trends. RESULTS: Of the 1535 older peo

Integrated Transcriptomic-Proteomic Analysis Using a Proteogenomic Workflow Refines Rat Genome Annotation.

Proteogenomic re-annotation and mRNA splicing information can lead to the discovery of various protein forms for eukaryotic model organisms like rat. However, detection of novel proteoforms using mass spectrometry proteomics data remains a formidable challenge. We developed EuGenoSuite, an open source multiple algorithmic proteomic search tool and utilized it in our in-house integrated transcriptomic-proteomic pipeline to facilitate automated proteogenomic analysis. Using four proteogenomic pipelines (integrated transcriptomic-proteomic, Peppy, Enosi, and ProteoAnnotator) on publicly available

Multiresolution wavelet analysis for efficient analysis, compression and remote display of long-term physiological signals.

Increased inter-equipment connectivity coupled with advances in Web technology allows ever escalating amounts of physiological data to be produced, far too much to be displayed adequately on a single computer screen. The consequence is that large quantities of insignificant data will be transmitted and reviewed. This carries an increased risk of overlooking vitally important transients. This paper describes a technique to provide an integrated solution based on a single algorithm for the efficient analysis, compression and remote display of long-term physiological signals with infrequent short

Effects of healthy aging measured by intracranial compartment volumes using a designed MR brain database.

A publicly available database of high-quality, multi-modal MR brain images of carefully screened healthy subjects, equally divided by sex, and with an equal number of subjects per age decade, would be of high value to investigators interested in the statistical study of disease. This report describes initial use of an accumulating healthy database currently comprising 50 subjects aged 20-72. We examine changes by age and sex to the volumes of gray matter, white matter and cerebrospinal fluid for subjects within the database. We conclude that traditional views of healthy aging should be revised

The tissue microarray data exchange specification: a document type definition to validate and enhance XML data.

BACKGROUND: The Association for Pathology Informatics (API) Extensible Mark-up Language (XML) TMA Data Exchange Specification (TMA DES) proposed in April 2003 provides a community-based, open source tool for sharing tissue microarray (TMA) data in a common format. Each tissue core within an array has separate data including digital images; therefore an organized, common approach to produce, navigate and publish such data facilitates viewing, sharing and merging TMA data from different laboratories. The AIDS and Cancer Specimen Resource (ACSR) is a HIV/AIDS tissue bank consortium sponsored by t
