Inherited IL-12p40 deficiency: genetic, immunologic, and clinical features of 49 patients from 30 kindreds.

Autosomal recessive interleukin (IL)-12 p40 (IL-12p40) deficiency is a rare genetic etiology of mendelian susceptibility to mycobacterial disease (MSMD). We report the genetic, immunologic, and clinical features of 49 patients from 30 kindreds originating from 5 countries (India, Iran, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, and Tunisia). There are only 9 different mutant alleles of the IL12B gene: 2 small insertions, 3 small deletions, 2 splice site mutations, and 1 large deletion, each causing a frameshift and leading to a premature stop codon, and 1 nonsense mutation. Four of these 9 variants are recurrent

Daylight photodynamic therapy with 1.5% 3-butenyl 5-aminolevulinate gel as a convenient, effective and safe therapy in acne treatment: A double-blind randomized controlled trial.

While daylight photodynamic therapy (PDT) is a simpler and more tolerable treatment procedure for both clinicians and patients, it has never been applied for acne treatment. In this study, we evaluated efficacy, safety and histological changes of facial acne after application of the novel variant of 5-aminolevulinate (ALA)-ester, 1.5% 3-butenyl ALA-bu gel, using daylight only as the potential visible light source. Forty-six acne patients were randomly assigned to either ALA-bu or vehicle application group in a double-blind fashion. Both groups applied the allocated gel to facial acne lesions e

Plasma inflammatory biomarkers for Huntington's disease patients and mouse model.

Huntington's disease (HD), caused by expanded CAG repeats encoding a polyglutamine tract in the huntingtin (HTT) protein, presents with a predominant degeneration of neurons in the striatum and cortex. Lines of evidence have observed neuroinflammation, particularly microglial activation, is involved in the pathogenesis of HD. Given that HTT is also expressed in peripheral inflammatory cells, it is possible that inflammatory changes detected in peripheral plasma may be biologically relevant and parallel the neuroinflammatory process of HD patients. By examining the expression levels of 13 micro

Comparison of inflammatory markers between diabetic and nondiabetic ST segment elevation myocardial infarction.

BACKGROUND: Inflammation plays a significant role in acute coronary syndrome (ACS) and type 2 diabetes mellitus (DM). There may be similar inflammatory changes in non-DM patients with ST elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) and DM patients with stable angina (SA), and DM patients with STEMI may have more severe changes than the former two groups. The objectives of this study were to investigate whether the level of inflammation was similar in patients with non-DM STEMI and DM SA, and to evaluate whether the changes in the level of inflammation were more severe in patients with DM STEMI comp

Analysis of the interrelationship between IL-12, TNF-alpha, and IFN-gamma production during murine listeriosis.

IL-12, a recently described cytokine, is an important mediator in the early production of IFN-gamma during infection. To evaluate the timing of IL-12 production, and its relationship to TNF-alpha, and IFN-gamma production during primary murine listeriosis, we measured cytokine mRNA and protein levels in C57B1/6 mice infected intravenously with Listeria monocytogenes (LM). IL-12 is a disulfide-linked heterodimer containing two chains (designated P35 and P40); however, bioactive cytokine production has been more closely linked with P40 expression. Consequently, we monitored mRNA and protein leve

[Association of interleukin 2 and interferon alpha in the management of cervical condylomatosis].

At present the therapy of cervical condylomatosis is based on the use of interferon because the HPV types responsable for condyloma inhibit the immunitary system. But many A. studying the effects of IFN have found that at high concentration it has an immunosuppressive action. The aim of the present study was to evaluate if interleukin-2 associated with IFN is useful in avoiding this negative effect by improving the efficacy of cervical condylomatosis therapy. We treated 25 women suffering from cervical condyloma with increasing doses of IL-2 injected intralesionally and associated with natural
