Shame is related to several mental disorders. We assume that facets of shame, namely bodily, cognitive and existential shame, may occur in typical patterns in mental and personality disorders. An excessive level of shame may lead to psychopathological symptoms. However, a lack of shame may also lead to distress, for instance as it may facilitate violation of social norms and thus may promote interpersonal problems. In this study we investigated facets of shame in females suffering from various mental disorders and personality disorders presumably associated with specific aspects of shame. Wome

Poor adherence to depression treatment is common. Understanding determinants of poor adherence to therapy is crucial to ensure optimal clinical outcomes. The aim of this study was to describe characteristics of dosing history in participants with depression receiving once daily escitalopram. Participants were randomly assigned to interpersonal psychotherapy (IPT) or pharmacotherapy. Participants assigned to IPT who did not evidence a response or remission had escitalopram added to their treatment. Adherence to pharmacotherapy was assessed using an electronically monitored pill cap (MEMS). Fift…

In this work I tried to classify Anorexia nervosa into two groups, the central group and the reactive group. The central group contains four different subgroups, the immature, the schizoid, the hysterical and the compulsive type. In the first two subgroups the lack of appetite appears primarily at the onset of the disease, and the fear of growing up plays an important role. In the latter two subgroups the lack of appetite comes later on the basis of a conscious or subconscious suppression of the appetite; here prevails a wish to be slender and the disturbance of the aesthetic value orientation

Jungian psychotherapy (JP) is an established treatment modality in modern healthcare systems, yet empirical validation remains a key requirement for its continued recognition and insurance coverage. This study aimed to assess the effectiveness of JP by evaluating pre- and post-treatment changes in psychological symptoms, personality structure, and quality of life among 104 participants undergoing supervised therapy at a German training institute. Using a pre-post design, participants completed standardized psychometric assessments, including the International Classification of Diseases - 10th

OBJECTIVE: Both structural (e.g., ageism) and personal (e.g., stigma) barriers hinder older adults' access to and engagement with mental health care. These barriers are particularly problematic for those vulnerable to interpersonal violence and abuse (e.g., due to social isolation). This study presents a quality improvement program aimed at older adults who have experienced significant stressful events, particularly elder mistreatment, within a larger trauma specialty clinic. Leveraging home-based telemedicine, the clinic provides evidence-based psychotherapy tailored to the needs of older adu

OBJECTIVE: Attachment insecurity may confer risk for developing an eating disorder. We describe domains of attachment functioning that are relevant to eating disorders including: affect regulation, interpersonal style, coherence of mind, and reflective functioning. Research since 2000 on attachment and eating disorders related to these domains is reviewed.
METHOD: We searched MedLine/Pubmed and PsycINFO from January 2000 to February 2014 and kept articles that: were empirical, included adults with a diagnosed eating disorder, and used a standard attachment measure. We retained 50 relevant stu

In this study, we aimed to explore interpersonal distress as a moderator of the effects of supportive treatment (ST) versus supportive expressive treatment (SET) on the therapeutic alliance and outcome in patients with depression. We drew on data from a randomized controlled trial where 100 patients were randomized to receive 16 sessions of either ST or SET. Patients completed a measure of interpersonal problems at baseline. Therapy outcome and the strength of the therapeutic alliance were measured by patient self-report, before and after each session, respectively. We conducted interactive th

Clinical errors tend to be underreported even though examining them can provide important training and professional development opportunities. The group therapy context may be prone to clinician errors because of the added complexity within which therapists work and patients receive treatment. We discuss clinical errors that occurred within a group therapy in which a patient for whom group was not appropriate was admitted to the treatment and then was not removed by the clinicians. This was countertherapeutic for both patient and group. Two clinicians were involved: a clinical supervisor who i

When we have a negative emotional experience, we often recount this experience to others. Such emotional sharing plays a key role in building and maintaining interpersonal relationships, and is a vital component of most psychotherapies. Yet, while research shows the importance of social relationships for brain health, the neural underpinnings of emotional sharing remain largely unknown. Here, we asked whether successful processing and regulation of negative emotions can be linked to shared brain responses between dyads during and after emotional sharing. Participants watched videos eliciting e

Telehealth has expanded access to psychotherapy for veterans, yet little is known about how art therapy is experienced in remote formats. In this paper, we describe a thematic analysis that involved male and female veterans with PTSD and TBI (aside from one participant without a TBI) in individual telehealth art therapy. This paper explores the similarities and differences in male and female veterans' engagement in art therapy. Nine veterans (6 male, 3 female) diagnosed with PTSD (with most also having TBI) participated in eight sessions of individual telehealth art therapy. Clinical notes, se

The Level of Personality Functioning Scale (LPFS) was introduced in DSM-5 to articulate a conceptual foundation for all types of personality psychopathology, and to provide an assessment of the severity of impairment. Constructed using universal human capacities related to self- and interpersonal functioning, the LPFS defines a continuum of 5 levels ranging from optimal functioning to extreme impairments in functioning. While there have been a growing number of empirical studies demonstrating its reliability and validity, the LPFS was designed fundamentally as an informative clinical tool, pot

Chronic exposure to stressors and potentially psychologically traumatic events contributes to the high prevalence of mental health disorders in correctional workers (CWs) and other public safety personnel (PSP). Digital mental health interventions are an accessible and scalable method of improving and maintaining the mental health of this population. The current review explores the benefits of digital mental health interventions for PSP-with a focus on CWs-and how these innovations can address the limitations in in-person mental health care. A systematic literature search of five databases (Me

BACKGROUND: Chronobiological processes play a critical role in the initial manifestation and course of affective disorders. Chronotherapeutic agents aim to improve sleep-wake cycle disturbances and affective symptoms by modulating the chronobiological neuronal circuitry.
OBJECTIVE: To review the different chronotherapeutic procedures, the current evidence situation and recommendations for clinical applications.
METHOD: Narrative review.
RESULTS: Chronotherapeutic interventions for patients with affective disorders can be nonpharmacological, e.g., light therapy, sleep deprivation, sleep phas

Co-ruminating about one's problems appears to involve both beneficial self-disclosure and harmful rumination, suggesting that moderate levels may be the most adaptive. This study used nonlinear regression to determine whether moderate levels of self-reported co-rumination in relationships with a sibling, parent, friend, and romantic partner are linked to the highest levels of self-perceived social support and lowest levels of self-reported depression symptoms in 175 emerging adults (77% female; M = 19.66 years). As expected, moderate co-rumination was associated with high social support across
