Mutual Sexual Rights in Islamic Jurisprudence: A Critical Analytical Review.

Couples should respect and strive to satisfy each other's sexual needs, safeguarding their mutual well-being. An examination of the judicial texts of Islamic schools (Shi'a and Sunni) reveals two main theories regarding the fulfillment of sexual needs within the family. According to the dominant theory, decisions concerning sexual intercourse and its manner rest with the husband. According to the non-dominant theory, as long as neither spouse faces physical or psychological obstacles, both the husband and wife are required-based on mutual consent-to fulfill each other's sexual needs. Desperate to connect: Men's dependence on romantic relationship in a competitive mating landscape.

This commentary builds on Wahring et al.'s model of male emotional dependency by integrating mating market dynamics. It argues that men's reliance on romantic partners, combined with competitive pressures and limited emotional networks, creates a volatile psychological landscape. Romantic failure, in this context, can deeply threaten self-worth - fueling distress, behavioral issues, and, in extreme cases, ideological radicalization.

Organizing adult attachment in alternative ways: A qualitative assessment of schemas antithetical to the secure base script.

How adults make meaning of their childhood experiences with caregivers plays a central role in how they anticipate support, manage distress, and interpret relationships. To understand how adults conceptualize these attachment relationships, the Adult Attachment Interview (AAI) probes for childhood memories of general relationships, day-to-day interactions, and instances of loss, threat, and separation. Across these narratives, the AAI captures expectations of whether caregivers are perceived as an available source of support in times of distress, and whether they serve as a secure base from wh

Relationship-bound roles and role-filler independence in social cognition.

The target article proposes an evolutionarily old "institutional stance," where people make sense of others' behavior through roles independent of individuals. We argue that representations of such role-filler-independent roles are likely not primitives. We offer an alternative: relationship-bound role representations that encode particular individuals. Role-filler independence may instead be a cultural tool that addresses coordination challenges in large-scale groups.

Interpersonal Problems and Their Mental Health Correlates: A Meta-Analytic Review.

Interpersonal relationships have long been considered fundamental to understanding mental health and psychological functioning. Among various aspects of these relationships, interpersonal problems seem particularly significant in relation to mental health. This meta-analytic review aims to summarize the associations between interpersonal problems and multiple domains of mental health based on naturalistic, observational data from both clinical and nonclinical populations. Focusing on studies using the Inventory of Interpersonal Problems (IIP), we examined the cross-sectional associations betwe…

Disruption of Epistemic Trust in Borderline Personality Disorder: A Possible Adaptation to Avoid Making Costly Mistakes.

This paper applies error management theory (EMT) (Haselton and Buss 2000) to explore how disruptions in epistemic trust-trust in communicate … e stigma and informs evolutionary-informed interventions to recalibrate trust responses and improve interpersonal relationships. This approach highlights the significance of integrating evolutionary perspectives in treating trust disturbances in BPD.

How self-disclosure of negative experiences shapes prosociality?

People frequently share their negative experiences and feelings with others. Little is known, however, about the social outcomes of sharing negative experiences and the underlying neural mechanisms. We addressed this dearth of knowledge by leveraging functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) hyperscanning: while dyad participants took turns to share their own (self-disclosure group) or a stranger's (non-disclosure group) negative and neutral experiences, their respective brain activity was recorded simultaneously by fNIRS. We observed that sharing negative (relative to neutral) experiences

Friendship as Medicine.

Social isolation is a risk factor for many diseases and overall increased mortality. Alternatively human connection has been noted to lead to healthier lives and longevity. Medical clinicians need to be more aware of this condition and consider how to prescribe friendship. This is not just an issue for the elderly; many Americans are being ravaged by being alone. There are many organizations that we can refer our patients to in order to make connections. This lesson is one we as physicians need to embrace ourselves as loneliness during our busy days is affecting us too.

Altered representation of peripersonal and interpersonal space in psychopathology.

The space surrounding the body, and the regulation of this buffer zone play a central role in adaptive behavior, with direct implications for psychopathology. The physical distance that we choose to maintain between ourselves and others for social comfort is known as Interpersonal Distance (IPD), whereas the action space that marks the perceptual border between the self and the external world is known as Peripersonal Space (PPS ). While both IPD and PPS represent personal space, they are distinct constructs, each associated with different methodologies. Here we review the existing literature o

Romantic relationships attenuated competition between lovers: evidence from brain synchronization.

Competition is an essential component of social interaction and is influenced by interpersonal relationships. This study is based on social exchange theory and explores the relationship between brain synchronization and competition in the binary system of romantic relationships through electroencephalogram hyperscanning technology. The results found that females had a greater win rate in the romantic and friend groups. During the early stage (0-200 ms), when the competitive target appeared, the stranger group exhibited greater interbrain synchronicity in the Alpha frequency band. However, duri…

Better relationships do not always feel better: Social relationships interact in predicting negative emotions in early adolescence.

How negatively young adolescents feel is central to their well-being. Intuitively, better social relationships should be linked to less negative emotions. This study tested this assumption, using a sample of over 80,000 young adolescents from 32 countries (ages 10-12). Inconsistent with the notion that better social relationships are always related to better emotional experiences, we found that links between negative emotions and adolescents' relationships with friends or teachers critically depend on their relationships with family. When young adolescents had relatively better relationships w

Indirect reciprocity undermines indirect reciprocity destabilizing large-scale cooperation.

Previous models suggest that indirect reciprocity (reputation) can stabilize large-scale human cooperation [K. Panchanathan, R. Boyd, Nature 432, 499-502 (2004)]. The logic behind these models and experiments [J. Gross et al., Sci. Adv. 9, eadd8289 (2023) and O. P. Hauser, A. Hendriks, D. G. Rand, M. A. Nowak, Sci. Rep. 6, 36079 (2016)] is that a strategy in which individuals conditionally aid others based on their reputation for engaging in costly cooperative behavior serves as a punishment that incentivizes large-scale cooperation without the second-order free-rider problem. However, these m

Bricolage as an expression of self and of cultural and familial foodways among people living in prison-'You make what you can with anything you can get'.

In this article, we use Lévi-Strauss's (1962, The savage mind, University of Chicago Press) concept of 'bricolage' to explore informal food preparation among men in Scottish prisons. The art of 'making do with whatever is at hand', in innovative and creative ways, to give new functions to everyday items has recently been reimagined and applied to the field of food. It has been used to explore the practice of informal food networks in resource poor environments; investigate how small food businesses come up with new and innovative recipes ideas; and study the way Michelin-starred chefs responde

Peer and parent influences on youth skateboarding and factors that affect their decision to return to the sport after injury.

Skateboarding is an increasingly popular sport among youth, despite the fact that they are a high-risk group for injuries during this activity. The purpose of this study was twofold: to explore youths' perceptions about the influences that peers and parents have on their skateboarding; and to identify factors that affect their decisions about returning to the sport after injury. Virtual semi-structured interviews were conducted with 26 youth, 14-17 years of age, who had experienced a medically-treated injury while skateboarding during the past year. Applying thematic analyses, major findings i

Personal Identity and Narrativity in Borderline Personality Disorder: A Phenomenological Reconfiguration.

Borderline personality disorder (BPD) is a complex condition marked by heterogeneity. People with BPD have a profusion of symptoms spread across various levels of lived experience, such as identity, affectivity, and interpersonal relationships. Researchers and clinicians have often resorted to the structuring concept of Self to organize the fragmentation of their experience at the identity level. Notably, using the concept of the narrative self, Fuchs proposed to interpret BPD as a fragmentation of narrative identity. This interpretation of BPD, widely shared, has been challenged by Gold and K…

Who benefits from which activity? On the relations between personality traits, leisure activities, and well-being.

Leisure activities have been emphasized as an important predictor of well-being. However, little research has examined the effects of leisure activity enactment on well-being over time. Moreover, it is unknown which activities are most beneficial for whom. We integrate diverse theoretical accounts of person-environment relations and propose a generic Personality-Activity-Well-Being (PAW) framework, which highlights different relations between personality traits, activities, and well-being. To investigate these relations, we used 11 annual waves from the Longitudinal Internet Studies for the So

The intrapersonal and interpersonal consequences of a new experimental manipulation of co-rumination.

Co-rumination is a form of interpersonal emotion regulation wherein dyads engage in extensive, cyclical conversations regarding the causes and consequences of problems and associated negative emotions. In the present investigation, we leveraged the biopsychosocial model of challenge and threat to elucidate the intrapersonal costs and interpersonal benefits of co-rumination. To do so, we developed the first direct experimental manipulation of co-rumination using a multimethod, dyadic approach to test the effects of co-rumination on both dyad members. Friend dyads (N = 172) engaged in conversati

Differential Antecedents and Consequences of Affective and Cognitive Ruminations.

Adopting the information processing perspective, the current study aims to investigate the differential effects of affective and cognitive ruminations on individuals' affective states and learning behavior, and to further explore their differential mediating roles in transmitting effects of challenge and hindrance stressors on affect and behavior. A two-wave survey, in which stressors and ruminations were measured in the first wave and affective states and learning behavior were measured in the second, was conducted to obtain responses from 410 employees. As expected, affective and cognitive r
