Pyloric atresia (PA) is an unusual congenital disorder that accounts for about 1% of all intestinal atresia, with an incidence around 1 in 100,000 live births. PA may occur as an isolated disorder or may be associated with epidermolysis bullosa (EB). EB comprises a heterogeneous group of cutaneous genetic diseases of inherited blistering and skin fragility disorders. Wound management in EB is complex and influenced by several comorbidities and the fragility of the skin. The prognosis of children with EB depends on the type of mutation inherited. Some types are mild and even improve with age, w…

BACKGROUND: Bowel atresia is a rare congenital anomaly that could affect any part of the bowel. It is categorized based on the type and location of the affected bowel with jejunoileal being the most common type worldwide. Risk factors for developing intestinal atresia are not well established, but we know that genetics, poor prenatal care, and low birth weight are considered risk factors.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: This is a case-control study conducted in King Abdulaziz Medical City tertiary hospital in Nursery Intensive Care Unit from 2004 to 2015 with a total number of 50 cases. Each case was m…

The association of foregut atresias and bile duct anomalies is reportedly rare. We encountered five referrals within 2 years where the secondary diagnosis was missed at operation. Four patients initially presented on antenatal scans as a foregut atresia whereas the fifth presented at nine years with abdominal pain due to a choledochal cyst. The biliary anomalies (cholecysto-hepatic duct, liver cyst and choledochal cysts) in the first four presented as postoperative jaundice during infancy whereas the fifth patient developed subacute intestinal obstruction due to congenital duodenal stenosis at

BACKGROUND/PURPOSE: The authors experienced 3 cases of persistent pulmonary hypertension of the neonate (PPHN) associated with duodenal atresia with paradoxical dilatation of the distal blind end of the duodenum. The aim of this study was to clarify the characteristics of this novel association.
METHODS: The medical charts of the patients were reviewed retrospectively.
RESULTS: Case 1 was a 2,862-g male infant with a prenatal diagnosis of duodenal atresia. The dilated intestine was identified as the distal blind end of the duodenum during duodeno- duodenostomy. PPHN developed after surgery,

A case is reported of a girl born by caesarean section at 28 weeks gestation who developed an acute perforation of the ileum due to intussuspetion 11 days after birth. This was treated successfully by resection of the affected segment of ileum and by performing a temporary ileostomy followed by end-to-end anastomosis. She made a complete recovery. This case also demonstrates the difficulty of early diagnosis of intussusception in the neonatal period.

BACKGROUND/PURPOSE: There are numerous congenital genitourinary conditions that result in vaginal agenesis or atresia. Reconstruction presents a challenge to the surgeon who wishes long-term functional and cosmetic results with low morbidity. Historically, reconstruction has involved the use of skin grafts and nonoperative methods with less than ideal results. The preference of the authors is to use intestinal segments for creating the neovagina and herein review their experience with this procedure.
METHODS: The authors identified 10 children who underwent vaginal construction with intestina

A circular was sent to eight clinics and 36 cases of children with extensive resections of the small intestine are reported. The reasons for the resections of the intestine were atresia and stenosis in the largest number of cases, then volvulus and lastly necrotizing enteritis. The residual intestine was measured with the measuring tape in only eight cases. The method of measurement in the other cases was not given. Surgery was unilateral in 26 cases and bilateral in ten. Surgical measures to slow passage were not used. The most frequent single causes of death were sepsis or pulmonary complica

The combination of duodenal atresia (DA) and esophageal atresia (EA) is very rare. With improvements in prenatal sonography and the use of fetal magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), these malformations can be diagnosed in a more accurate and timely manner; polyhydramnios remains the most common sign despite having a low specificity. The high rate of associated anomalies (in 85% of cases) can also impact neonatal management and increase the morbidity rate; thus, it is of paramount importance to look for every possible associated malformation, such as VACTERL and chromosomic anomalies. The surgical

We report a Saudi girl who presented at birth with neonatal diabetes, duodenal atresia, and progressive cholestasis. After other gene testing was negative, the clinical diagnosis of Mitchell-Riley syndrome was ultimately considered and further genetic analysis revealed a novel missense homozygous variant in RFX6: c.983A>T (p.asp328Val). Despite intensive management, the patient died from severe Klebsiella pneumoniae sepsis at 5 months of age. This rare syndrome should be suspected in any neonate with hyperglycemia complicated by intestinal atresia and/or progressive cholestasis that could sugg…

We review the current clinical evaluation and management of the most common esophageal and gastrointestinal motility disorders in children based on the literature and our experience in a pediatric motility center in the United States. The disorders discussed include esophageal achalasia, pre- and post-fundoplication motility disorders, gastroparesis, motility disorders occurring after repair of congenital atresias, motility disorders associated with gastroschisis, chronic intestinal pseudo-obstruction, motility after intestinal transplantation, motility disorders after colonic resection for Hi

Over a period of 22 years 91 cases of perforation or rupture of the intestinal tract were observed. Necrotising enterocolitis was most frequent (45%) followed by ruptures of congenital atresias of the intestinal tract (32%). In the first 11 years the mortality rate was 50%, in the following second period 25%. Infant birth weight registered in the first period was over 3000 g in 26% of the babies, in the second period in 11.5%. Whereas no child weighing less then 1000 g was admitted to hospital in the first period, 14% of those admitted in the second period did.

A case of asymmetrical thoraco-omphalo-ischiopagus tripus will be reported. Anal atresia, ruptured omphalocele with lesion of the small intestine made an artificial anus necessary. Recurrent adhesion ileus made three further operations necessary. After precise preliminary examinations we separated these twins at the age of 21/2 years. After 7 and 9 months both children had to be reoperated because of fistula of the small intestine. Twin R. died at the age of 3 years and 8 months in consequence of a candida sepsis. Twin P. now lives with his parents.

INTRODUCTION: Congenital anomalies (CAs) account for 26% of infant mortality in Argentina. The lethality rate for CAs measures the risk of death among affected infants.
OBJECTIVES: To describe the prevalence at birth of a group of selected CAs, to estimate the neonatal lethality rate, and to examine its association with different variables.
POPULATION AND METHODS: The study was conducted using data provided by the National Registry of Congenital Anomalies. Prevalences of encephalocele, spina bifida, gastroschisis, omphalocele, diaphragmatic hernia, esophageal atresia, intestinal atresia, or …

Duodenal diaphragm is one of the rare types of duodenal atresia described, causing intestinal obstruction in the neonatal period. It is caused by embryological factors. We report the case of a 17-day-old newborn hospitalized and treated for duodenal obstruction at the University clinics in Lubumbashi and whose intraoperative finding was duodenal diaphragm. Evolution was good after surgery.

Fetal small bowel obstruction is usually diagnosed by sonography in the late second or early third trimester. We report two such cases of different etiology: a case of meconium ileus due to cystic fibrosis and a case of intestinal atresia. The only sonographic finding that allowed differentiation between them was the echogenic bowel in the case of cystic fibrosis.

Prenatal exposure to cocaine is associated with a spectrum of defects that are secondary to interruption of blood flow to developing or previously developed structures. The defects include prenatal onset growth deficiency, prematurity, abruptio placentae, intercranial hemorrhage, nonduodenal intestinal atresia, limb reduction defects, urinary tract anomalies, and neurodevelopmental problems limited at present to the neonatal period.
