Ileus and intestinal obstruction--comparison between children and adults.

UNLABELLED: Bowel obstruction is the interference with movement of bowel content. Large and small in testing from duodenum to anal region can be obstructed mechanical or non-mechanical and complete or partial. Mechanical obstruction can presented because of obstructive causes in intestinal lumen, intestinal wall or pressure from other tissue on intestine. The aim of the study was to evaluate etiology, laboratory findings of intestinal obstruction and ileus among children and adults who discharged with good condition. MATERIAL AND METHODS: This retrospective study was carried out from 2001 to

A previously diagnosed mitochondrial neurogastrointestinal encephalomyopathy patient presenting with perforated ileal diverticulitis.

Mitochondrial neurogastrointestinal encephalomyopathy is an autosomal recessive multisystem disorder characterized clinically by severe gastrointestinal dysmotility; cachexia; ptosis, opthalmoparesis or both; peripheral neuropathy; leukoencephalopathy and mitochondrial abnormalities in muscle. Gastrointestinal dysmotility causes intestinal pseudo-obstruction and small intestinal diverticula. In this case report, we present a previously diagnosed 32-year-old female mitochondrial neurogastrointestinal encephalomyopathy syndrome patient who was hospitalized and operated due to ileal diverticuliti…

Interactions between commensal bacteria and gut sensorimotor function in health and disease.

Commensal bacteria inhabiting the human intestine (i.e., intestinal microflora) participate in the development and maintenance of gut sensory and motor functions, including the promotion of intestinal propulsive activity. On the other hand, intestinal motility represents one of the major control systems of gut microflora, through the sweeping of excessive bacteria from the lumen. There is emerging evidence indicating that changes in this bidirectional interplay contribute to the pathogenesis of gut diseases, such as small intestinal bacterial overgrowth and intestinal pseudo-obstruction. Recen…

Intestinal non-rotation and pseudoobstruction in myotonic dystrophy: case report and review of the literature.

Myotonic dystrophy is an autosomal dominant inherited disease of the skeletal and cardiac musculature that involves the pharyngeal and gastrointestinal smooth and striated muscles, resulting in velopharyngeal insufficiency, Swallowing difficulties, gastrointestinal motility disorders and anal incontinence. Gastrointestinal symptoms are found in a large proportion of patients suffering from this disease and may herald the onset of muscular disorders, in rare cases they are even the predominant feature of the disorder. We report on a 31-years-old patient with formerly undiagnosed myotonic dystro

Colonoscopic decompression and intubation of the cecum for Ogilvie's syndrome.

Cecal distention due to pseudo-obstruction of the left colon may result in perforation or necrosis of the right colon with catastrophic consequences. This problem occurs in people who are ill from other causes; therefore, the mortality and morbidity is high in Ogilvie's syndrome whether treated operatively or nonoperatively. The treatment of choice has been tube cecostomy when cecal diameter exceeds 12 cm on supine films. Fiberoptic colonoscopy has provided a new treatment modality for this condition. The cecum can be decompressed safely in most cases. Recurrent distention can be avoided by tr

[Paralytic and postoperative ileus (author's transl)].

Paralytic ileus is always a reaction of the organism to a disturbance usually due to metabolism. A treatment without elimination of the eliciting cause seems, therefore, to have little point. The efficacy of many substances given to stimulate peristalsis has not been proved. Drawing off the contents of the stomach and controlled infusion therapy, on the other hand, are important parts of the treatment, as for mechanical ileus. For the surgical emptying of the intestine, the most suitable procedure is retrograde squeezing of the intestinal contents to the stomach and aspiration through a nasal

Aganglionosis and related disorders.

Congenital aganglionosis or Hirschsprung's disease (HD) characteristically presents with involvement of the sigmoid colon and rectum. There is an associated increase in cholinergic and adrenergic innervation in the affected bowel wall. Diagnosis of HD in the neonatal period is readily achieved via submucosal rectal biopsy with recognition of the immaturity of ganglion cells within the first year of life, use of a standardized protocol, and supplemental acetylcholinesterase stain. Morbidity and mortality from HD occur caused by Hirschsprung's-associated enterocolitis (HAEC); the pathologist can

Megacystis, megacolon, and malrotation: a new syndromic association?

Chronic intestinal pseudo-obstruction (CIPO) can occur as a consequence of neuropathies including diffuse Intestinal Neuronal Dysplasia (IND), a relatively rare enteric nervous system (ENS) abnormality. Although various authors reported of diffuse IND associated either with intestinal malrotation or megacystis, the co-existence of these three entities in the same patient has never been described before. The aim of this paper is to report for the first time in literature a series of patient with such association, focusing on one who carries a de novo duplication of chromosome 12, suggesting a n…

[Thyroid-intestinal motility interactions summary].

Thyroid diseases may be related to gastrointestinal motility symptoms. Such symptoms can vary in degree and, sometimes, are the only clue of … erved in hypothyroidism. The clinically most demanding situation is certainly the secondary chronic intestinal pseudo-obstruction syndrome, which involves the bowel in most cases, but may also show up by means of a mega-small bowel or a mega-duodenum, or even all of the above. In conclusion it may be stated that: 1) thyroid diseases may be related to symptoms due to digestive …

ALTERNATIVE THERAPEUTIC APPROACHES FOR PARALYTIC ILEUS IN PERSIAN MEDICINE.

Paralytic ileus is a prevalent medical condition following surgery, exerting a significant financial impact on the healthcare system. Despite its considerable implications, there has been limited progress in advancing both diagnostic and curative approaches to address ileus. This study seeks to introduce alternative diagnostic methodologies rooted in Persian medicine (PM) for paralytic ileus. Our investigation involved a thorough review of literature, including The Canon of Medicine, and an exploration of various PM texts for relevant references. The findings were systematically compared with
