BACKGROUND: The primary objective of this study is to comparatively assess the safety of nasogastric (NG) feeding versus nasojejunal (NJ) feeding in patients with acute pancreatitis (AP), with a special focus on the initiation of these feeding methods within the first 48 h of hospital admission.
METHODS: Studies were identified through a systematic search in PubMed, EMbase, Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials, and Web of Science. Four studies involving 217 patients were included. This systematic review assesses the safety and efficacy of nasogastric versus nasojejunal feeding initi

INTRODUCTION: In clinical practice, tube feedings have been delayed after the percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy (PEG) tube placement. Previous studies, including a meta-analysis in 2008, have shown that it is safe to start tube feeding ≤ 4 h of PEG tube placement. However, it is still a common practice to delay the initiation of tube feeding up to 24 h after PEG tube placement. We have performed an updated analysis of studies comparing early versus delayed tube feedings following PEG placement.
METHODS: Major databases like PubMed, EMBASE, and Web of Science were searched in June 2022 for r

BACKGROUND: Drug administration through feeding tubes presents many challenges to the healthcare provider. There is little information available on medications than can be delivered safely when crushed and what efforts can be implemented to minimize clogging the feeding tube. Our institution requested a comprehensive examination of all oral medications for the feeding tube route.
METHODS: This report is a synopsis of the physical evaluation of 323 different oral medications for their appropriateness for feeding tube administration with distal site in either the stomach or jejunum. A worksheet

OBJECTIVES: The objective of this study is to determine whether jejunal nutrition by gastrojejunal tube (GJT) could be a therapeutic option for refractory gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), avoiding further antireflux surgery.
METHODS: A monocentric retrospective study was conducted for all children <18 years who underwent GJT placement to treat GERD. We collected data at the first GJT placement, 5 months after last GJT withdrawal, and at the end of the follow-up (June 2021).
RESULTS: Among 46 GERD patients with 86 GJT, 32 (69.6%) and 30 (65.2%) avoided antireflux surgery 5 and 28 month

BACKGROUND: Variation exists in the timing of tube feed initiation after percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy (PEG) tube placement. The aim of our study was to review outcomes of early tube feed (ETF) versus late tube feed (LTF) initiation after PEG tube placement.
METHODS: We performed a retrospective review of all trauma patients who underwent PEG tube placement from 1/2014 to 12/2018. ETF was defined as initiation < 24 h and LTF > 24 h after placement. The primary outcome measure was feeding intolerance and secondary outcomes included post-operative complications. All statistical analyses w

We report the case of a 31-year-old man with superior mesenteric artery syndrome after reoperation due to postoperative complications from rectal cancer. Although initial total parenteral nutrition (TPN) therapy failed, he underwent endoscopy-assisted feeding tube placement without complications instead of surgery. After 2 weeks of dual feeding (enteral feeding and TPN), he improved, gaining 6 kg; and an oral diet was advanced.

BACKGROUND: As nasogastric feeding tube insertion is a frequently applied, non-risk-free nursing technique, a high level of evidence-based nursing care is required. Little evidence is available regarding the accurate determination of the insertion length of nasogastric feeding tubes. The method of using the nose-earlobe-xiphoid distance as measurement is inadequate and not supported by evidence. Findings from a recent randomized trial led to an alternative calculation: the corrected nose-earlobe-xiphoid distance formula: (nose-earlobe-xiphoid distance × 0.38696) + 30.37 + 6 cm.

BACKGROUND: Bedside methods to verify placement of a feeding tube are not accurate for detecting placement within the gastrointestinal tract, increasing risk of pulmonary aspiration. Current guidelines recommend verifying placement every 4 hours, yet the rationale for this recommendation is unknown.
OBJECTIVE: To assess spontaneous migration of small-bore feeding tubes in critically ill adults.
METHODS: A prospective, repeated-measures cohort study was performed in 2 intensive care units. An electromagnetic placement device was used to assess distal feeding tube location every 24 hours for 7

Nasogastric tube feeding is a common method of parenteral nutrition. We observed ulcers on the epiglottis caused by a nasogastric tube in three adults with severe motor and intellectual disabilities (SMID) during examination with a laryngeal fiberscope while swallowing. These ulcers were healed by changing the method of inserting the nasogastric tube. The patients were three men aged 25, 39, and 55 years. The muscle tone of the whole body was increased in all of the patients. Two patients had severe scoliosis, and the other patient had lordosis in the thoracic vertebrae and had received laryng

Despite improvements in overall prognosis, in the quality of life and in growth targets, children on peritoneal dialysis are subject to a high risk of growth retardation, especially if the disease begins in the early stages of life. In these patients, spontaneous feeding often does not provide an adequate intake of nutrients and early start of enteral nutrition needs to be considered. An intensive nutritional approach should always be established early and can be technically achieved using either a naso-gastric tube or a gastrostomy. In Italy, the first approach often involves the use of a nas

The use of nasoenteric tubes (NETs) is ubiquitous, and clinicians often take their placement, function, and maintenance for granted. NETs are used for gastrointestinal decompression, enteral feeding, medication administration, naso-biliary drainage, and specialized indications such as upper gastrointestinal bleeding. Morbidity associated with NETs is common, but frequently subtle, mandating high index of suspicion, clinical vigilance, and patient safety protocols. Common complications include sinusitis, sore throat and epistaxis. More serious complications include luminal perforation, pulmonar
