This paper examines some of the medico-legal issues that arose as a result of a situation which occurred in May 2001 in Ireland when a woman who was a British citizen and who was fourteen weeks pregnant collapsed and suffered a brain haemorrhage. She was taken to hospital where she was placed on life support but declared brain-dead. A national study was undertaken to investigate the incidence of invasive pneumococcal disease in the Republic of Ireland and to examine the associated isolates. Mycoplasma bovis was detected in 134 (18 per cent) of 736 samples of bovine lung tissue collected from fatal pneumonia cases in the Republic of Ireland between April 1995 and December 1998. We assessed the clinical outcome of pregnancies with non-Rh-D antibody in Northern Ireland using retrospective case note review. During the study period (April 1999- March 2000) 186 women with clinically significant antibodies were identified from the records of the antenatal laboratory of the Northern Ireland Blood Transfusion Service. METHODS: To ensure complete case ascertainment, multiple sources of information were used, including consultant neurologists, neurophysiologists, primary care physicians, and the Irish Motor Neuron Disease Association. AIMS: To quantify risk factors for agranulocytosis in subjects receiving clozapine.

Water fluoridation was introduced in Ireland in 1964 and in recent years the availability of fluoride from other sources had increased. As part of a National Survey of Children's Health in Ireland Dean's and the DDE indices were used to determine the prevalence of enamel fluorosis/defects in 8- and 15-yr-old children in fluoridated and non-fluoridated areas. Medical status of 1,500 patients attending a primary health care dental practice was examined by means of patient self-completed health questionnaire and by structured verbal interview by a dentist. Relevant medical histories and/or drug therapies affecting the practices of dentistry were found in 27.7% of patients. Screening for iron deficiency was offered to 485 pre-school children in one practice. Ocular injuries of sufficient severity to necessitate admission to the Eye and Ear Clinic, Royal Victoria Hospital, Belfast, were sustained by 1707 male patients and 325 female patients.
