BACKGROUND: Fibrinogen-like protein 1 (FGL1) is a hepatokine that regulates hepcidin through antagonism of the bone morphogenetic protein (BMP) pathway. Although preclinical studies suggest a role for FGL1 in iron metabolism, its clinical behavior in human iron deficiency anemia (IDA) remains unclear. This study evaluates circulating FGL1 levels in IDA and examines its diagnostic performance and relationship with hematologic and biochemical markers.
METHODS: This cross-sectional study included 112 participants: healthy controls (n = 46), primary IDA (n = 46), and patients with IDA associated

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: The increasing adoption of vegetarian dietary patterns among athletes (including lacto-ovo, lacto-, ovo-vegetarian, and vegan diets) has prompted growing interest in their potential effects on health and sports performance. Iron status remains one of the key nutritional concerns in this context, given the lower bioavailability of non-heme iron and the higher physiological demands of exercise. This review aims to synthesize and critically evaluate current evidence on the prevalence, consequences, adaptive responses, and management of iron deficiency in vegetarian athletes.

AIMS: Iron deficiency (ID) is common in chronic heart failure (HF) and may disturb bone metabolism. We investigated the association of ID with bone mineral density (BMD), and the potential mediating roles of fibroblast growth factor 23 (FGF-23) and 1,25-dihydroxy vitamin D (1,25(OH)2 vitamin D) in patients with chronic HF from the Studies Investigating Co-morbidities Aggravating Heart Failure (SICA-HF).
METHODS AND RESULTS: ID was defined as a transferrin saturation (TSAT) <20%. Among 198 patients (69 [61-76] years, 80% men), TSAT was <20% in 29.8% and associated with higher BMD (1.25 vs. 1.20

Patients with heart failure (HF) frequently experience iron deficiency, with an estimated prevalence of sideropenia around 50%. In HF patients, iron deficiency is associated with reduced functional capacity, lower quality of life, and an increased risk of hospitalizations and mortality. Therefore, timely diagnosis and treatment of sideropenia are essential to improve clinical outcomes in HF patients with reduced or mildly reduced ejection fraction, while data on the benefits of iron supplementation in HF patients with preserved ejection fraction remain limited. This review aims to provide an o

BACKGROUND: Iron deficiency (ID) is common in patients with heart failure and is associated with worse outcomes regardless of the presence of anemia. However, the prevalence and clinical implications of ID in adults after Fontan operation has not been elucidated.
METHODS: This was a retrospective cohort of adults after the Fontan operation who underwent laboratory tests and cardiopulmonary exercise testing (CPET). ID was defined as ferritin <100 μg/L or ferritin 100-300 μg/L and a transferrin saturation <20%. The prevalence of ID and its relationships with CPET findings and the composite outc

Pagophagia, defined as compulsive ice eating or ice chewing, is a common form of an eating anomaly (pica) caused by iron deficiency and is treated with iron replacement therapy. The physiological characteristics of pagophagia are reviewed. In one study, iron-deficient subjects were deficient in a test of attention, and ice consumption improved the subjects' response time relative to those drinking tepid water, an effect attributed to increased blood perfusion to the brain and heart. Several studies show that cold stimuli applied to the mouth increase blood flow velocity in the middle cerebral

Iron deficiency is highly prevalent in patients with cancer and has major impacts on morbidity and quality of life. The etiologies of cancer-related iron deficiency are multifactorial, and unlike in the noncancer population, most patients with cancer-related iron deficiency have functional iron deficiency due to cancer-related inflammation. Diagnosis of iron deficiency in patients with cancer requires different thresholds compared with patients without cancer. Treatment of iron deficiency requires adequate dosing of iron repletion and specific understanding of patient context (ie, perioperativ

Iron deficiency (ID) tends to be overlooked compared with anemia. However, its prevalence is estimated to be twice as high as that of ID anemia, and ID without anemia can be accompanied by clinical and functional impairments. The symptoms of ID are nonspecific, such as fatigue and lethargy, but can lead to neurodevelopmental disorders in children, restless legs syndrome, and recurrent infections due to immune system dysregulation. In particular, the risk of ID is high in the context of chronic inflammatory diseases (CIDs) due to the reaction of various cytokines and the resulting increase in h

Anemia is frequently observed in patients with cancer owing to anticancer chemotherapy, radiation therapy, and inflammatory responses. This often leads to functional iron deficiency, characterized by adequate iron stores but impaired use of iron for red blood cell production. This condition, termed functional iron deficiency anemia (IDA), is identified by a ferritin level of 30-500 µg/dL and a transferrin saturation < 50%. Functional iron deficiency often develops with the prolonged use of erythropoiesis-stimulating agents, leading to a diminished response to anemia treatment. Although oral ir

Polycythemia vera (PV) is a myeloproliferative neoplasm that is associated with an elevated risk of thrombosis. Treatment strategies are based on thrombosis risk classification. Phlebotomy is a commonly recommended treatment for all patients with PV, regardless of their risk classification, and reduces the incidence of thrombosis by lowering hematocrit levels. However, patients with PV frequently present with iron deficiency at diagnosis due to increased erythropoiesis, which repeated phlebotomy can exacerbate. This can produce symptoms that diminish quality of life, such as fatigue, lethargy,
