Does ipsilateral and bilateral knee strength status predict lower extremity injuries of elite judokas; a prospective cohort study.

The association of pre-participation knee muscle strength status with lower limb injury occurrence was investigated. Knee extensors and flexors muscle strength status including the traditional hamstrings/quadriceps (H/Q), Q/Q, H/H, and the non-dominant H/Q: dominant H/Q, HQ:HQ, ratios were recorded before the 10 month judo activity. Fifteen lower limb sport injuries were recorded for 53 judokas during the follow-up questionnaires. Significant accuracy of dominant H/Q ratio 60º/s (AUC 0.702, 95% CI 0.520 to .883, p = 0.023), as well as HQ:HQ ratios 300º/s (AUC .318, 95% CI 0.138 to 0.497, p = 0

An Analysis of Knee Injuries in Rugby League: The Experience at the Newcastle Knights Professional Rugby League Team.

BACKGROUND: Epidemiologic data in professional sport is becoming an increasingly valuable tool in identifying frequently occurring injuries and developing strategies to reduce their occurrence. Currently, there is a paucity of literature on the epidemiology of knee injuries in professional male rugby league players. METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed medical records from a single male professional rugby league team (Newcastle Knights), competing in Australia, and evaluated knee injuries and time to return to play. RESULTS: In total, 89 knee injuries occurred, with an injury incidence of 61…

Association between frontal plane knee control and lower extremity injuries: a prospective study on young team sport athletes.

BACKGROUND/AIM: Poor frontal plane knee control can manifest as increased dynamic knee valgus during athletic tasks. The purpose of this study was to investigate the association between frontal plane knee control and the risk of acute lower extremity injuries. In addition, we wanted to study if the single-leg squat (SLS) test can be used as a screening tool to identify athletes with an increased injury risk. METHODS: A total of 306 basketball and floorball players participated in the baseline SLS test and a 12-month injury registration follow-up. Acute lower extremity time-loss injuries were

Relevancy and reproducibility of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) interpretation in multiple-ligament injuries and dislocations of the knee.

INTRODUCTION: After multiple-ligament injuries and dislocations of the knee, clinical assessment of the soft tissues is difficult and MRI is generally performed. HYPOTHESIS: MRI is a reliable examination, providing a precise and reproducible assessment of soft-tissue lesions after multiple-ligament injuries or dislocations of the knee. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Forty patients presenting multiple-ligament lesions of the knee were included in this multicenter prospective study. All had an MRI of the knee in the 48 h following their accident. Thirty-four patients were treated surgically. A 17-item

Are Prior Foot/Ankle or Knee Injuries in Youth Sports Associated With Current Hip Pain in Young Adulthood?

CONTEXT: Hip pain is a concern in young adults, with previous hip injury recognized as a key contributing factor. However, little is known a … ional Scale. Ordinal logistic regression models assessed the association of prior foot/ankle and/or knee injuries with current hip pain. Secondary analyses evaluated the effect of (1) foot/ankle and hip injury history on current knee pain and (2) knee and hip injury history on current foot/ankle pain. Finally, we explored the relationship between current lower …

Surgical Timing and Rehabilitation (STaR) for Multiple Ligament Knee Injuries: Study Protocol for a Multicenter Integrated Clinical Trial.

Multiple ligament knee injuries (MLKIs) often result in persistent pain, residual disability including post-traumatic osteoarthritis, and high healthcare costs. Although nonrandomized and retrospective research supports operative management, evidence informing the optimal timing of MLKI surgery and subsequent rehabilitation is lacking. In addition, return to preinjury military duty, work, and sports after MLKI is poorly understood. The Surgical Timing and Rehabilitation (STaR) Trial for MLKIs was designed to address these gaps in evidence for surgery and postoperative rehabilitation for milita…

Surgical Management of Multi-Ligamentous Knee Injuries: Current Concepts and Case Report of a Complex KD-IV Case.

Background and Clinical Significance: Multiligamentous knee injuries (MLKIs) are uncommon but severe injuries associated with instability, neurovascular compromise, and long-term functional impairment. Irreducible knee dislocations are a distinct subgroup requiring urgent intervention because soft-tissue interposition may prevent closed reduction and place the limb at risk of skin necrosis and vascular compromise. This report reviews current concepts in MLKI management and presents a complex KD-IV irreducible knee dislocation treated with a staged surgical strategy. Case Presentation: A 56-yea…

The emerging role of photon-counting detector CT: primary experience on the integrated assessment of acute knee injuries.

Early accurate diagnosis of osseous and soft tissue injuries following acute knee trauma is crucial for guiding clinical management and preventing chronic instability. Radiography is the appropriate first imaging test applied to detect traumatic osseous injuries. CT is indicated based on clinical symptoms and radiographic concordance. In this acute phase, soft tissue injuries are often clinically overlooked due to swelling and restricted motion, which significantly limit comprehensive physical examination. Moreover, both x-ray and conventional CT imaging are insufficient for addressing this is

Gastrocnemius muscle flap for coverage of knee defects in the injuries of popliteal artery: a clinical case report.

The use of the gastrocnemius muscle flap has become an excellent choice for coverage of Knee Defects. However, the surgical management of gastrocnemius muscle flap in the injuries of the popliteal artery remains a challenging therapeutic problem. The purpose of this manuscript is to present a case of a successful knee gastrocnemius flap in a patient with popliteal artery injuries. In 2024, a 46-year-old woman with a tibia fracture and popliteal artery injury went to the emergency department of Namazi Hospital. In the first step, the external fixator of the tibia bone was performed to fix the f

Trends and epidemiology of knee extensor mechanism injuries presenting to United States emergency departments from 2001 to 2020.

OBJECTIVES: Injuries to the native extensor mechanism (EM) of the knee are potentially disabling and often require surgical treatment. Large-scale, updated epidemiological data on these injuries is lacking. The objective of the current study was to examine recent trends in EM injuries presenting to United States (US) Emergency Departments (EDs) over the last 20 years using a nationally representative sample. METHODS: This study retrospectively analyzed the National Electronic Injury Surveillance System (NEISS) database to identify cases of EM injuries (defined as either a quadriceps tendon ru

Prevalence of and risk factors for hock and knee injuries on dairy cows in tiestall housing in Canada.

Leg injuries on dairy cows are a common and highly visible welfare concern on commercial dairy farms. With greater attention being placed on food animal welfare and limited research being conducted on tiestall farms, this study aimed to identify prevalence and risk factors for hock and knee injuries on dairy cows housed in tiestall barns in Ontario (n=40) and Quebec (n=60). A sample of 40 cows was purposively selected per farm and several animal- and farm-based measures were taken. Both hocks and both knees on each cow were scored as injured (presence of lesions or swelling) or not injured (no…

Below-knee amputations as a result of land-mine injuries: comparison of primary closure versus delayed primary closure.

BACKGROUND: Antipersonnel land mines are designed to maim by mutilating the lower extremities, and these injuries are at higher risk for infection than injuries from other weapon systems. METHODS: The results of 474 unilateral traumatic below-knee amputations as a result of land-mine injuries were reviewed. If the delay in evacuation between the injury and arrival to the battle field hospital was less than 6 hours, 392 amputation stumps (group I) were closed primarily after meticulous debridement. Open amputation was performed after debridement in the remaining 82 amputation stumps (group II)
