[Comparative study in acute unilateral vestibular disorders].

The results of follow-up examinations on 52 patients suffering from acute unilateral vestibular paralysis are compared with the data of 295 patients with the same illness, compiled from 10 publications, and the successes of the treatment methods are compared. Function was restored, independent of the age of the patient, intensity of the symptoms at the onset of the illness and the extent of the functional damage. Concomitant diseases and so-called high-risk factors had no influence on the prognosis. The infusion-therapy carried out with rheologic or vasoactive drugs showed no better result tha

[Optokinetic reactivity and vestibular disorders of central origin (author's transl)].

An electronystagmographic study of optokinetic reactivity is conducted in 50 'normal' adult subjects and 200 patients suffering from various diseases, all of whom presented an abnormal electronystagmogram. Optokinetic reactivity is evoked by a sudden acceleration of the optokinetic stimulus. It is considered normal when this acceleration leads to an increase in amplitude. At the same time, the frequency of the optokinetic nystagmus decreases. This type of response can be modified by various disorders. Recent cranial trauma and tetany are associated with an incomplete or inadequate optokinetic

[Viral infection and ear diseases].

The association of viral infection to ear disease has triggered a great deal of interests. In the present paper, we provide a critical review of the viral hypothesis of ear diseases. Detection of viral antigen and antibody or RNA and DNA in the patients serum, endolymphatic fluid or surgical pathology specimens reveals that virus may have relevance to certain kinds of ear diseases, such as Meniere's disease, idiopathic sudden sensorineural hearing loss, otosclerosis. Bell's palsy and otitis media. The most appealing is the herpesvirus, which can cause latent infection in the neurons, and its r

Immune-mediated sensorineural hearing loss.

1. It is necessary to keep in mind that the etiology of immune-mediated SNHL involves various causes ranging from vasculitis to type II collagen-related disorders. 2. Clinical cases believed to involve sympathetic labyrinthitis are extremely rare. 3. The mechanism of occurrence of SNHL associated with autoimmune diseases should probably not be attributed to immunologic abnormalities in all cases. 4. Of the cases of SNHL associated with autoimmune diseases, only those associated with aortitis syndrome (Takayasu disease) are steroid-responsive. 5. The autoimmune SNHL described by McCabe is belie

Label-free differentiation of functional zones in mature mouse placenta using micro-Raman imaging.

In histopathology, it is highly crucial to have chemical and structural information about tissues. Additionally, the segmentation of zones within a tissue plays a vital role in investigating the functions of these regions for better diagnosis and treatment. The placenta plays a vital role in embryonic and fetal development and in diagnosing some diseases associated with its dysfunction. This study provides a label-free approach to obtain the images of mature mouse placenta together with the chemical differences between the tissue compartments using Raman spectroscopy. To generate the Raman ima

Assessment of the effect of mesoglycan in the treatment of audiovestibular disorders of vascular origin.

It is a well-known fact that inner ear diseases are often caused by microcirculatory disorders, and the recent literature is oriented towards investigations into the relationship between the cardiovascular system and cochleovestibular illness with related classical symptoms: tinnitus, hearing loss, and vertigo or instability. These symptoms, and particularly the vertigo, may be the alarm signal of microcirculatory disorders of the labyrinth or vertebrobasilar circulation so as to represent a possible symptom of posterior circulation stroke. The treatment aimed at correcting the haemodynamic an

Angiogenesis: possible analogies between the eye and the inner ear.

Angiogenesis is a phenomenon concerning both physiological conditions linked to development and pathological conditions; in the latter it is aimed at providing an enhancement in blood supply to tumours, on one hand, and to restore the circulation in peripheral arterial and ischemic diseases, on the other hand, thus resulting in a controversial effect depending on the circumstances. When occurring in the eye, angiogenesis clearly proved to represent a threaten, whereas an univocal interpretation of the action of angiogenesis on the inner ear homeostasis is still lacking despite the morphologic

Water channel proteins in the inner ear and their link to hearing impairment and deafness.

The inner ear is a fluid-filled sensory organ that transforms mechanical stimuli into the senses of hearing and balance. These neurosensory functions depend on the strict regulation of the volume of the two major extracellular fluid domains of the inner ear, the perilymph and the endolymph. Water channel proteins, or aquaporins (AQPs), are molecular candidates for the precise regulation of perilymph and endolymph volume. Eight AQP subtypes have been identified in the membranous labyrinth of the inner ear. Similar AQP subtypes are also expressed in the kidney, where they function in whole-body

Intratympanic dexamethasone in Manières disease and symptom control.

BACKGROUND: Manières disease (MD) is a chronic inner ear disease characterized by recurrent vertigo and fluctuation in auditory symptoms. Vertigo spells have a sudden onset and are difficult for patients to handle. Therefore, treating a patient with MD is still a challenge for clinicians. AIMS: This study aims to analyse the short-term effects of intratympanic dexamethasone (ITD) on the various symptoms of unilateral MD. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The study comprised 27 patients with unilateral MD and severe vertigo who failed medication therapy. Treatment was with ITD as an alternative to destr

Fluctuations in Vestibular Afferent Excitability in Menière's Disease.

OBJECTIVE: To determine if Menière's disease is associated with fluctuations in afferent excitability in four human subjects previously implanted with vestibular stimulators. STUDY DESIGN: Longitudinal repeated measures. SETTING: Tertiary referral center, human vestibular research laboratory. PATIENTS: Four human subjects with previously uncontrolled Menière's disease unilaterally implanted in each semicircular canal with a vestibular stimulator. One subject had only two canals implanted. INTERVENTION(S): Repeated measures of electrically-evoked slow phase eye velocity and vestibular elect

Meniere's disease: histopathology, cytochemistry, and imaging.

Meniere's disease is a poorly understood, disabling syndrome causing spells of vertigo, hearing fluctuation, tinnitus, and aural fullness. In this paper, we present a review of the histopathology, cytochemistry, and imaging of Meniere's disease. Histopathology is significant for neuroepithelial damage with hair cell loss, basement membrane thickening, and perivascular microvascular damage. Cytochemical alterations are significant for altered AQP4 and AQP6 expression in the supporting cell, and altered cochlin and mitochondrial protein expression. Current developments include imaging techniques

[Evaluation of the fistula test and the positional test in the diagnosis of a fistula of the labyrinth (author's transl)].

111 patients with a chronic otitis media and symptoms of dizziness were investigated. Out of 75 patients, who were operated, a fistula of the labyrinth was suspected in 25 patients due to a positive fistula test or a positive (fistula) positional test. A fistula was found in 15 patients. In those 15 cases both the fistula and the positional (fistula) test were positive in nine cases. In the remaining six cases three had a positive fistula test and three a positive (fistula) positional test. The other 50 patients all with negative fistula reactions one fistula was whereas found by the operation
