Artemisinin potentiates apoptosis and triggers cell cycle arrest to attenuate malignant growth of salivary gland tumor cells.

BACKGROUND: A review of the literature has indicated that lower body stiffness, defined as the extent to which the lower extremity joints resists deformation upon contact with the ground, may be a useful measure for assessing Achilles injury risk in triathletes. The nature of overuse injuries suggests that a variety of different movement patterns could conceivably contribute to the final injury outcome, any number and combination of which might be observed in a single individual. Measurements which incorporate both kinetics and kinematics (such as stiffness) of a movement may be better able to

Chronic Leg Ischemia Caused by Arterial Bullet Embolization.

Intravascular shrapnel or bullet embolization after a gunshot injury is rare, with fewer than 200 cases reported over the past century. Military injuries typically have high energy transfer, making this phenomenon less prevalent. A 22-year-old military personnel presented with chronic leg ischemia resulting from arterial bullet embolization. Before 4 months, he had sustained a military injury and subsequently required hospitalization for pneumohemothorax. A 21-mm bullet obstructing the popliteal artery caused chronic leg ischemia and was scheduled for elective vascular surgery. Physicians shou

Leg hammock for closed reduction of tibial shaft fractures.

Tibial shaft fractures are common injuries in emergency departments (EDs). Although many of these fractures require surgery, nearly all are stabilized in the ED with a long leg splint or bivalved cast. Long leg splinting is often challenging for a single health care provider. Further, even with assistance or previously described techniques for fracture reduction and stabilization, fracture angulation may occur, potentially leading to pain for the patient, fracture displacement, or further soft tissue injury. The authors propose a method for splinting tibial fractures that avoids fracture angul

Effect of Hip Range of Motion Restrictions on Injury in Baseball Players: A Systematic Review.

OBJECTIVE: To determine whether restrictions in hip external rotation (ER) or internal rotation (IR) range of motion (ROM) are related to overall injury risk in baseball players. DATA SOURCES: Three databases were systematically searched from inception through September 2024 using the following keywords: hip, acetabular, acetabulum, pelvis, pelvic, and baseball. STUDY SELECTION: Studies were included if the authors evaluated baseball players, assessed clinical hip measures, and related these measures to injury. Two independent reviewers screened 495 studies, with 17 meeting final inclusion c

A systematic review of tibialis anterior tendon rupture treatments and outcomes.

Tibialis anterior (TA) tendon rupture is a relatively rare injury that has been documented primarily in case reports. This article is the first large systematic review of the literature on treatment techniques for subcutaneous rupture of TA tendons. Studies for review were identified through a PubMed search. Eligible studies involved cases of closed tendon rupture. Of the 87 cases in the study, 72 were treated with surgery, 15 with conservative measures. Mean age was 63.9 years (surgery group) and 72.4 years (conservative treatment group). Primary repair was used most often for newer injuries,

[Venous trauma of the limbs].

Traumatic lesions of veins in the limbs must be considered in 3 types of circumstances: (1) Extensive injuries, open or closed, affecting the principal vascular axis and usually damaging both the vein and artery at the same time; these wounds or ruptures in the principal venous supply pose the problem of repair using autogenous venous material, since it is now known that the result of arterial reconstruction (which is so essential for the limb) may be compromised by the lack of a satisfactory return circulation. Because of this, amputation may be resorted to, as is still too often seen in the

Side distinct sciatic nerve recovery differences between rats and mice.

The Sciatic Functional Index (SFI) is widely used to evaluate functional recovery after sciatic nerve injury, primarily in the rat, and more recently shown useful in the mouse. This quantitative, non-invasive method allows tracking of regeneration capability, visible in the gait of the animal. Using a Martin micro needle holder, carrying a force measured to be 49.2 N, the left sciatic nerve was crushed for 60 s. We accumulated data from walking tracks collected preoperatively and 1, 7, 14, 21, and 28 days after injury. SFI values were first calculated in the traditional manner. Then using the

Intraseptal superficial peroneal nerve.

Knowledge of the anatomy of the superficial peroneal nerve (SPN) is necessary for surgeons caring for patients with lower extremity pain after ankle, leg, or knee injuries, for athletes with exertional compartment syndrome, and those having reconstructive microsurgery with either soft tissue or vascularized fibular flaps. The anatomy of the SPN is known to be that of a peripheral nerve traveling in the lateral compartment of the lower leg. Recently, clearer descriptions of its variability have documented that between 27 and 43% of patients have the SPN in either the anterior compartment or bot

Unexpected foreign body in the leg of an 8-month-old child.

Accidents and injuries associated with foreign bodies are important causes of childhood mortality. Diagnosis can be facilitated by obtaining a detailed history, performing a physical examination and utilising simple imaging methods. We report a case involving a fragmented sewing needle in the left leg of an 8-month-old male infant. He was admitted to our clinic with diffuse pain in the left leg, limitation of leg movements and an inability to stand. The patient was successfully treated with open surgery under fluoroscopy. Soft tissue foreign bodies and potential child physical abuse should be

Nutrition for the Prevention and Treatment of Injuries in Track and Field Athletes.

Injuries are an inevitable consequence of athletic performance with most athletes sustaining one or more during their athletic careers. As many as one in 12 athletes incur an injury during international competitions, many of which result in time lost from training and competition. Injuries to skeletal muscle account for over 40% of all injuries, with the lower leg being the predominant site of injury. Other common injuries include fractures, especially stress fractures in athletes with low energy availability, and injuries to tendons and ligaments, especially those involved in high-impact spor

The avoidability of soccer injuries.

One hundred eighty players in a male soccer division were followed prospectively for 1 year to assess etiologic factors in soccer injuries. Range of motion and muscle strength in the lower extremities were measured in a preseason test. All injuries during 1 year were examined by the same orthopaedic surgeon. 42% of the injuries were considered to be due to player factors, such as joint instability, muscle tightness, inadequate rehabilitation, or lack of training. Ankle sprains were commoner in players with previous ankle sprains or clinical instability. 35% of the moderate (absence from practi

Quality of Movement for Athletes 6 Months After ACL Reconstruction.

BACKGROUND: Anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury prevention programs address quality of movement to identify and correct high-risk movement patterns. However, return-to-play decisions after ACL reconstruction (ACLR) are often based on non-sport related quantitative measures such as isokinetic tests, jump testing, and/or time from surgery, with 6 to 9 months a common expectation for progressing to sport-specific training and return to play. PURPOSE: To identify the presence in each limb of movement patterns associated with ACL injury in athletes 6 months post-ACLR using a quality-of-movemen
