Negative life events as an account of age-related differences in the genetic aetiology of depression in childhood and adolescence.

BACKGROUND: Many twin studies have reported that the genetic aetiology of depression differs according to age, with genetic influences being more important for adolescents than younger children. We sought to examine whether this age-related increase in the relative importance of genetic factors is due to an increase in gene-environment correlation specifically involving negative life events. METHOD: Questionnaires were sent to the families of a population-based sample of twins aged between 8 and 17 years. Parents of all the twins and adolescents aged 11 and over were asked to complete the Moo

Beyond the "fetishism of words": considerations on the use of the interview to gather chronic illness narratives.

The author explores the technique of interviewing chronic illness patients to obtain narratives of their illness experiences. It is argued that the perspective that interview responses are accurate reflections of experience (the "fetishism of words") hampers the understanding of patient voice and agency. Discussions of chronic illness and narrative are followed by an examination of the interview based on the work of Charles L. Briggs. The author then uses the concepts of self-presentation and social support to examine what interviewers and interviewees contribute to the coconstructed discourse

Sex differences in event-related risk for major depression.

BACKGROUND: This study sought to determine if women are more likely than men to experience an episode of major depression in response to stressful life events. METHOD: Sex differences in event-related risk for depression were examined by means of secondary analyses employing data from the Americans' Changing Lives study. The occurrence and time of occurrence of depression onset and instances of stressful life events within a 12-month period preceding a structured interview were documented in a community-based sample of 1024 men and 1800 women. Survival analytical techniques were used to exami

Employment and health among older bereaved men in the normative aging study: one year and three years following a bereavement event.

Research has indicated that the negative effects of bereavement on health among elderly men occur within the first six to twelve months following a bereavement event while other studies indicate that the death of a loved one can have long-term effects on social functioning and mental health (Arbuckle & DeVries, 1995; Vinick, 1983a). However, employment has been found to buffer the strain produced by stressful life events. The purpose of this study was to examine the differential effects of employment on physical and mental health between elderly men bereaved for one year and elderly men bereav

Life events and panic disorder/agoraphobia: a comparison at two time periods.

Semistructured interviews of 187 patients with a DSM-III diagnosis of panic disorder or agoraphobia with panic attacks were conducted an average of 12 years after onset of the disorder. Interviews solicited life events that occurred in the year before onset and in the year preceding index evaluation. The number and type of life events were found to be similar at onset and at the later evaluation. However, the results showed that a tendency for increased reporting of life events before onset in a subgroup of patients was counterbalanced by a tendency for decreased reporting in another subgroup.

When disaster strikes, acute stress disorder may follow.

During and immediately following a traumatic event, people may manifest a pattern of dissociative and anxiety symptoms and other reactions, referred to as Acute Stress Disorder. A review of the empirical literature on psychological reactions to trauma suggest that this pattern of symptoms has often been identified across different kinds of traumatic events. It is likely to constitute a psychological adaptation to a stressful event, limiting painful thoughts and feelings associated with the event and allowing the person to function at least minimally. Continuation of these symptoms, however, ma

Autobiographical memory disturbance in combat-related posttraumatic stress disorder.

Vietnam combat veterans with (n = 19) and without (n = 13) posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) participated in an autobiographical memory experiment in which they attempted to retrieve specific personal memories exemplifying traits denoted by positive (e.g. loyal) and negative (e.g. guilty) cue words. Veterans with PTSD exhibited difficulties retrieving specific autobiographical memories, especially in response to positive trait cue words. These deficits were especially pronounced in PTSD Ss who wore Vietnam War regalia (e.g. medals, fatigues) to the laboratory. Regalia-wearing PTSD Ss dispro

Life events and endogenous depression. A puzzle reexamined.

BACKGROUND: Research has failed to find the expected clear-cut difference in the presence of events provoking onset in endogenous and nonendogenous depression. METHODS: A longitudinal study of 127 depressed female patients from two psychiatric departments were studied using the Present State Examination and the Life Event and Difficulty Schedule. Two earlier patient series using the same measures were employed to check findings, and two general population series were used to estimate the expected rate of life events. RESULTS: A large proportion of patients experienced a severely threatening

The role of life event stress, coping and social support in chronic headaches.

A group of chronic headache sufferers (migraine and tension-type headache) was compared with two individually matched control groups of nonheadache subjects in terms of life event stress, and the stress moderating factors of coping skills and social support. The headache group did not differ from the control groups on the measures of life event stress or coping but significant differences arose on the measure of social support with the headache group achieving lower scores than the control groups. The findings were interpreted as suggesting that clinicians and researchers should pay more atten

[Stress and depression].

Stress largely influences our depression models. Animal models of depression and for the detection of antidepressants, and severity of psychosocial stressors scale have emphasized the role of stress in depression. Life events, who are understood as social stressors, may be recent prior to onset (6-12 months) of depression (provoking agents) or remote e.g. loss of parent in childhood (predisposing factors). Many results from studies must be interpreted cautiously because of retrospective designs and other methodological limitations. Among predisposing factors, loss due to separation may have a

Children's coping in self- and other-relevant contexts.

The purpose of this study was to examine children's coping strategies in situations in which negative events befall the children themselves and contexts in which children observe others in negative situations. Kindergarten and second-grade children and their mothers were interviewed about the children's coping strategies in distressing self- or other-relevant contexts (e.g., when the children themselves were socially rejected or when they observed a peer being rejected). According to both child and maternal reports, children were particularly likely to use instrumental coping strategies when t

Interpersonal stressors, substance abuse, and suicide.

In contrast to suicide in depression, suicide associated with alcoholism and substance dependence may be preceded more often by interpersonal loss and conflict 6 weeks prior to death. We used psychological autopsy methodology in an effort to clarify and extend these findings using a more comprehensive typology of interpersonal stressors. Subjects included 57 suicide victims with diagnoses of alcohol/substance dependence (A/SD; N = 30) and mood/anxiety disorders (M/AD; N = 27). Consistent with previous studies, a substantial majority of the A/SD suicide victims were confronted with interpersona

Neuroendocrine mechanisms and the precipitation of depression by life events.

It is now generally accepted that stressful life events and chronic difficulties can trigger the onset of depression in predisposed individuals. However, although much is known of the neurobiology of stress, few attempts have been made to provide a biological explanation for the mechanisms whereby life events might trigger depression. Enough is now known of the central control of hypothalamic pituitary adrenal (HPA) function and its response to stress to permit an examination of its role in the neurobiology of the triggering of depression by stress. This evidence is reviewed, and the proposal

Predicting psychiatric symptoms among homeless people.

Multiple regression was used to predict psychiatric symptoms among homeless people. The following variables were significant predictors of psychiatric symptoms: current life satisfaction, previous psychiatric hospitalization, the number of stressful life events, social support, problem drinking, and childhood unhappiness. The results are discussed in terms of their policy and practice implications, particularly the need for crisis intervention services and for dual-diagnosed clients.

Well-being in the postparental stage in Mexican-American women.

There has been limited research documenting the effects of the postparental stage of the family cycle in Mexican-American women. This study compared the psychological and physical well-being of middle-aged Mexican-American women from San Antonio who had children present in the home with those who no longer had any children present in the home (postparental). The findings are consistent with the results from studies with other groups that indicate that the postparental stage does not appear to have negative consequences on the psychological and physical well-being of women. However, employment

Impact of depressive symptomatology on alcohol problems in women.

The association between the amount of depression manifest at time of an alcoholic woman's admission to treatment, the course of alcoholism and its consequences, and early psychosocial vulnerabilities was examined in a sample of women in treatment for alcoholism (n = 301). Two indices of depression, one reflecting low self-esteem and the other current mood were constructed by factor analysis of interview items measuring depression (drawn from Center for Epidemiological Studies Depression scale, Diagnostic Interview Scale, and Personal Attributes Questionnaire). Both depression indices were asso

Psychosocial aspects of disease duration and control in young adults with type I diabetes.

Self-report questionnaires completed by young adults with Type I diabetes were examined to determine if individuals differing in recent metabolic control (Poor, Moderate or Very Good) or disease duration (Long, Short) also vary in either occurrence or type of life events during the past year or occurrence of recent emotional distress. Subjects in Poor control reported more positive and neutral life events during the past year, suggesting even those life changes individuals view benignly may be associated with metabolic control difficulties. Individuals in Poor control also reported more recent

Functional somatic complaints in adolescents: relationship to negative life events, self-concept, and family characteristics.

While recurrent somatic complaints are commonly encountered in children and adolescents, occult organic disease is rarely found in patients with these complaints. Recent studies have confirmed the clinical impression that a relationship exists between functional somatic complaints and negative life events in adolescents. Our goal was to investigate additional psychosocial characteristics that may be associated with functional complaints. One hundred fifteen adolescents coming for the first time to an adolescent medicine clinic completed standard measures of negative life events, psychophysiolo

Life events and difficulties preceding the onset of functional dysphonia.

The Bedford College Life Events and Difficulties Schedule was used to determine the experiences of 56 women and 9 men who were interviewed about the 12 months before the onset of functional dysphonia. Thirty (54%) of the women had experienced a difficulty or event which involved conflict over speaking out (CSO), a dimension developed during the course of the study. Only 16% of a comparison group had such experiences. Other types of event and difficulty were no commoner in the dysphonic women than in the comparison group.
