Hexahydro-1,3,5-trinitro-1,3,5-triazine transformation by biologically reduced ferrihydrite: evolution of Fe mineralogy, surface area, and reaction rates.

Microbial respiration of Fe(III) oxides has been shown to produce reduced Fe phases that are capable of transforming a variety of oxidized contaminants. Little data, however, are available on how these Fe phases evolve over time and how this evolution may affect their ability to reduce contaminants. Here, the evolution and reactivity of biologically reduced ferrihydrite were monitored over a period of 14 months. Solids were collected from a culture of Geobacter metallireducens (GS-15) thatwas incubated with ferrihydrite (as the electron acceptor) for 0, 7, 10, 20, 75, and 400 days. Mineralogica

Engineered hollow magnetic nanoparticles based on whole blood purifier for efficient capture and elimination of circulating tumor cells.

The efficient elimination of circulating tumor cells (CTCs) within the peripheral bloodstream holds crucial scientific significance in mitigating cancer recurrence and metastasis. However, capturing and killing CTCs in vascular tissue always cause damage to normal blood cells, tissues, and organs. Hence, an in vitro isolation and enrichment system (IES) based on the blood purification has been developed, aiming to elimination of CTCs from peripheral blood. This device is designed with an antibody-modified magnetic adsorbent (Fe-Mn-EpCAM) filled into a capture column. It works by extracting per

Albumin coating of magnetic nanoparticles for imaging, tracking and delivery through biological barriers.

The advent of nanotechnology in biotechnology and medicine has accelerated the development of nanomaterials as innovative tools for diagnostics, therapy, and drug delivery. Despite their versatility, many nanoparticle systems fail in vivo due to their limited ability to traverse biological barriers, resulting in off-target distribution, rapid clearance, or undesired bioaccumulation. Structural parameters-including size and surface chemistry-critically shape nanoparticle biodistribution and fate. Albumin, the most abundant serum protein, naturally acts as a long-circulating carrier capable of t

Amoxicillin-loaded chitosan coated magnetic nanocarriers as a dual-platform for anaerobic bacterial preconcentration and gene-sensing in periodontal pathogen detection.

Periodontitis, a progressive inflammatory condition, causes periodontal tissue destruction, pain, chewing difficulties, and tooth loss, primarily due to pathogenic oral biofilms dominated by low abundance periodontopathic bacteria. Accurate diagnosis is hindered by the limited bacterial presence in saliva, necessitating effective enrichment techniques. This study introduces novel amoxicillin-loaded chitosan-coated magnetic nanocarriers (AMX-CS-MNCs) designed for rapid capture, enrichment, and DNA extraction of Gram-positive and Gram-negative anaerobic periodontal pathogens, including Porphyrom

Interactions between prokaryotic polysaccharides and colloidal magnetic nanoparticles for bacteria removal: A strategy for circumventing antibiotic resistance.

Highly stable, colloidal iron oxide nanoparticles with an oxyhydroxide-like surface were used as bacteria-capturing nano-baits. Peptidoglycan isolated from Listeria spp was used as bacteria polysaccharide model, and the nanoparticle binding was characterized showing a Langmuir isotherm constant, KL, equal to 50 ± 3 mL mg-1. The chemical affinity was further supported by dynamic light scattering, transmission electron microscopy, and infrared and UV-Vis data, pointing at the occurrence of extended, coordinative multiple point bindings. The interaction with Gram (+) (Listeria spp) and Gram (-) (

Magnetically modified bacteriophage-triggered ATP release activated EXPAR-CRISPR/Cas14a system for visual detection of Burkholderia pseudomallei.

Burkholderia pseudomallei, widely distributed in tropical and subtropical ecosystems, is capable of causing the fatal zoonotic disease melioidosis and exhibiting a global trend of dissemination. Rapid and sensitive detection of B. pseudomallei is essential for environmental monitoring as well as infection control. Here, we developed an innovative biosensor for quantitatively detecting B. pseudomallei relies on ATP released triggered by bacteriophage-induced bacteria lysis. The lytic bacteriophage vB_BpP_HN01, with high specificity, is employed alongside magnetic nanoparticles assembly to creat

Bioinspired Synthesis of Magnetic Nanoparticles Based on Iron Oxides Using Orange Waste and Their Application as Photo-Activated Antibacterial Agents.

Magnetic nanoparticles based on iron oxides (MNPs-Fe) have been proposed as photothermal agents (PTAs) within antibacterial photothermal therapy (PTT), aiming to counteract the vast health problem of multidrug-resistant bacterial infections. We present a quick and easy green synthesis (GS) to prepare MNPs-Fe harnessing waste. Orange peel extract (organic compounds) was used as a reducing, capping, and stabilizing agent in the GS, which employed microwave (MW) irradiation to reduce the synthesis time. The produced weight, physical-chemical features and magnetic features of the MNPs-Fe were stud

Comparative in vitro and in vivo Evaluation of Different Iron Oxide-Based Contrast Agents to Promote Clinical Translation in Compliance with Patient Safety.

INTRODUCTION: One of the major challenges in the clinical translation of nanoparticles is the development of formulations combining favorable efficacy and optimal safety. In the past, iron oxide nanoparticles have been introduced as an alternative for gadolinium-containing contrast agents; however, candidates available at the time were not free from adverse effects. METHODS: Following the development of a potent iron oxide-based contrast agent SPIONDex, we now performed a systematic comparison of this formulation with the conventional contrast agent ferucarbotran and with ferumoxytol, taking

Folic Acid-Modified Fluorescent-Magnetic Nanoparticles for Efficient Isolation and Identification of Circulating Tumor Cells in Ovarian Cancer.

Ovarian cancer (OC) is a lethal disease occurring in women worldwide. Due to the lack of obvious clinical symptoms and sensitivity biomarkers, OC patients are often diagnosed in advanced stages and suffer a poor prognosis. Circulating tumor cells (CTCs), released from tumor sites into the peripheral blood, have been recognized as promising biomarkers in cancer prognosis, treatment monitoring, and metastasis diagnosis. However, the number of CTCs in peripheral blood is low, and it is a technical challenge to isolate, enrich, and identify CTCs from the blood samples of patients. This work develo

Comparative study of core- and surface-radiolabeling strategies for the assembly of iron oxide nanoparticle-based theranostic nanocomposites.

This work highlights the superiority of the surface-radiolabeling strategy over the core-labeling strategy in the assembly of radioactive iron oxide nanoparticle (IONP)-based nanocomposites for use in multimodal imaging and targeted therapy. It also implies a possible overestimation of the labeling stability in previous studies and points out directions for further optimization.

Dual Role of Magnetic Nanoparticles as Intracellular Hotspots and Extracellular Matrix Disruptors Triggered by Magnetic Hyperthermia in 3D Cell Culture Models.

Magnetic hyperthermia is a promising therapy for the localized treatment of cancer based on the exposure of magnetic nanoparticles to an external alternating magnetic field. In order to evaluate some of the mechanisms involved in the cellular damage caused by this treatment, two different 3D cell culture models were prepared using collagen, which is the most abundant protein of the extracellular matrix. The same amount of nanoparticles was added to cells either before or after their incorporation into the 3D structure. Therefore, in one model, particles were located only inside cells (In model
