When Maturation is Not Linear: Brain Oscillatory Activity in the Process of Aging as Measured by Electrophysiology.

Changes in brain oscillatory activity are commonly used as biomarkers both in cognitive neuroscience and in neuropsychiatric conditions. However, little is known about how its profile changes across maturation. Here we use regression models to characterize magnetoencephalography power changes within classical frequency bands in a sample of 792 healthy participants, covering the range 13 to 80 years old. Our findings unveil complex, non-linear power trajectories that defy the traditional linear paradigm, with notable cortical region variations. Interestingly, slow wave activity increases correl…

Data-Driven Classification of Spectral Profiles Reveals Brain Region-Specific Plasticity in Blindness.

Congenital blindness has been shown to result in behavioral adaptation and neuronal reorganization, but the underlying neuronal mechanisms are largely unknown. Brain rhythms are characteristic for anatomically defined brain regions and provide a putative mechanistic link to cognitive processes. In a novel approach, using magnetoencephalography resting state data of congenitally blind and sighted humans, deprivation-related changes in spectral profiles were mapped to the cortex using clustering and classification procedures. Altered spectral profiles in visual areas suggest changes in visual al…

The bottom-up and top-down processing of faces in the human occipitotemporal cortex.

Although face processing has been studied extensively, the dynamics of how face-selective cortical areas are engaged remains unclear. Here, we uncovered the timing of activation in core face-selective regions using functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging and Magnetoencephalography in humans. Processing of normal faces started in the posterior occipital areas and then proceeded to anterior regions. This bottom-up processing sequence was also observed even when internal facial features were misarranged. However, processing of two-tone Mooney faces lacking explicit prototypical facial features enga…

Emotional face processing in autism spectrum disorder: Effects in gamma connectivity.

Impairments in social functioning are characteristic of autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Differences in functional networks during face processing in ASD compared to controls have been reported; however, the spatial-temporal dynamics of networks underlying affective processing are still not well understood. The current magnetoencephalography study examined whole-brain functional connectivity to implicit happy and angry faces in 104 adults with and without ASD. A network of reduced gamma band (30-55 Hz) phase synchrony occurring 80-308 ms following angry face presentation was found in adults wit…

Altered auditory repetition suppression and MMNm in relation to cognitive tests in older adults.

Cognitive changes with aging have been connected to deficiency in early-stage cortical repetition suppression (RS) and mismatch negativity (MMN). Here, we intended to investigate age-associated alterations of auditory RS and MMN by using a roving standard paradigm, and examine their relations to cognitive performances. Twenty-two young and 22 elderly adults were recorded with a magnetoencephalography. The Chinese Version Verbal Learning Test (CVVLT) and Trail Making Test (TMT) were administered to the older group. Compared to the younger, the elderly exhibited reduced magnitudes of P50m RS in …

Rapid Invariant Encoding of Scene Layout in Human OPA.

Successful visual navigation requires a sense of the geometry of the local environment. How do our brains extract this information from retinal images? Here we visually presented scenes with all possible combinations of five scene-bounding elements (left, right, and back walls; ceiling; floor) to human subjects during functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) and magnetoencephalography (MEG). The fMRI response patterns in the scene-responsive occipital place area (OPA) reflected scene layout with invariance to changes in surface texture. This result contrasted sharply with the primary visua…

A thalamocortical pathway for fast rerouting of tactile information to occipital cortex in congenital blindness.

In congenitally blind individuals, the occipital cortex responds to various nonvisual inputs. Some animal studies raise the possibility that a subcortical pathway allows fast re-routing of tactile information to the occipital cortex, but this has not been shown in humans. Here we show using magnetoencephalography (MEG) that tactile stimulation produces occipital cortex activations, starting as early as 35 ms in congenitally blind individuals, but not in blindfolded sighted controls. Given our measured thalamic response latencies of 20 ms and a mean estimated lateral geniculate nucleus to prima…

Single-trial prediction of reaction time variability from MEG brain activity.

Neural activity prior to movement onset contains essential information for predictive assistance for humans using brain-machine-interfaces (BMIs). Even though previous studies successfully predicted different goals for upcoming movements, it is unclear whether non-invasive recording signals contain the information to predict trial-by-trial behavioral variability under the same movement. In this paper, we examined the predictability of subsequent short or long reaction times (RTs) from magnetoencephalography (MEG) signals in a delayed-reach task. The difference in RTs was classified significant…

Frontoparietal Structural Connectivity Mediates the Top-Down Control of Neuronal Synchronization Associated with Selective Attention.

Neuronal synchronization reflected by oscillatory brain activity has been strongly implicated in the mechanisms supporting selective gating. We here aimed at identifying the anatomical pathways in humans supporting the top-down control of neuronal synchronization. We first collected diffusion imaging data using magnetic resonance imaging to identify the medial branch of the superior longitudinal fasciculus (SLF), a white-matter tract connecting frontal control areas to parietal regions. We then quantified the modulations in oscillatory activity using magnetoencephalography in the same subjects…

Spontaneous fluctuations in neural responses to heartbeats predict visual detection.

Spontaneous fluctuations of ongoing neural activity substantially affect sensory and cognitive performance. Because bodily signals are constantly relayed up to the neocortex, neural responses to bodily signals are likely to shape ongoing activity. Here, using magnetoencephalography, we show that in humans, neural events locked to heartbeats before stimulus onset predict the detection of a faint visual grating in the posterior right inferior parietal lobule and the ventral anterior cingulate cortex, two regions that have multiple functional correlates and that belong to the same resting-state n…

Neural correlates of the impact of control on decision making in pathological gambling.

Perceived control over a gambling outcome leads individuals to accept more and larger bets, increased risk-taking. Pathological gamblers, however, do not diminish risk-taking when control is absent, suggesting an illusion of control. To evaluate neural correlates of perceived control in gamblers, this study compared magnetoencephalography responses of 36 pathological (PG) and 36 non-pathological gamblers (NPG) during the Georgia Gambling Task. PGs exhibited greater activity in bilateral primary sensory regions. An interaction between pathology and control over the gambling task was observed bi…

Role of medial cortical networks for anticipatory processing in obsessive-compulsive disorder.

Recurrent anticipation of ominous events is central to obsessions, the core symptom of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), yet the neural basis of intrinsic anticipatory processing in OCD is unknown. We studied nonmedicated adults with OCD and case matched healthy controls in a visual-spatial working memory task with distractor. Magnetoencephalography was used to examine the medial cortex activity during anticipation of to-be-inhibited distractors and to-be-facilitated retrieval stimuli. In OCD anticipatory activation to distractors was abnormally reduced within the posterior cingulate and fu…

The evolution of meaning: spatio-temporal dynamics of visual object recognition.

Research on the spatio-temporal dynamics of visual object recognition suggests a recurrent, interactive model whereby an initial feedforward … ic information required by the task and driven by the stimuli. To test this prediction, we recorded magnetoencephalography data while participants named living and nonliving objects during two naming tasks. We found that the spatio-temporal dynamics of neural activity were modulated by the level of semantic integration required. Specifically, source reconstructed time c …

Does neurophysiological testing provide the information we need to improve the clinical management of primary dystonia?

Emerging pathophysiological findings suggest that primary dystonia originates partly though not exclusively from brain dysfunction involving the basal ganglia and cortico-striatal-thalamo-cortical motor circuits. Studies applying various neurophysiological tests, including spinal and brainstem reflexes, transcranial magnetic stimulation, somatosensory evoked potentials and magnetoencephalography, have documented numerous pathophysiological abnormalities in the various forms of primary dystonia. Owing to differences in the methodology used and in the clinical features of the patients enrolled, …

Auditory gating deficit to human voices in schizophrenia: a MEG study.

BACKGROUND: Patients with schizophrenia have auditory gating deficits; however, little is known about P50 auditory gating to human voices and its association with clinical symptoms. We examined the functioning of auditory gating and its relationship with the clinical symptoms in schizophrenia. METHODS: Auditory evoked magnetoencephalography responses to the first and the second voices stimuli were recorded in 22 schizophrenia patients and 28 normal control subjects. The auditory gating ratios of P50m and N100m were investigated and P50m-symptom correlations were also investigated. RESULTS: P…

Effective behavioral treatment of focal hand dystonia in musicians alters somatosensory cortical organization.

New perspectives in neurorehabilitation suggest that behavioral treatments of movement disorders may modify the functional organization of central somatosensory neural networks. On the basis of the assumption that use-dependent reorganization in these networks contributes to the fundamental abnormalities seen in focal dystonia, we treated 10 affected musicians and measured the concomitant somatosensory changes by using whole-head magnetoencephalography. We found that effective treatment, using the method of sensory motor retuning, leads to alterations in the functional organization of the soma…

Ictal magnetic source imaging as a localizing tool in partial epilepsy.

OBJECTIVE: To determine the feasibility and usefulness of ictal magnetoencephalography (MEG) recordings in the presurgical evaluation of patients with epilepsy. METHODS: Twenty patients with frequent or predictable seizures were studied with the intent to capture seizures using a large array single-probe 37-channel or dual-probe 74-channel biomagnetometer. RESULTS: Successful ictal MEG recordings were made in 6 of 20 patients with neocortical epilepsy. In one other patient, a seizure was captured but movement artifact made MEG recordings impossible. As determined by invasive EEG recording an…

Spatiotemporal maps of brain activity underlying word generation and their modification during repetition priming.

Spatiotemporal maps of brain activity based on magnetoencephalography were used to observe sequential stages in language processing and their modification during repetition priming. Subjects performed word-stem completion and produced either novel or repeated (primed) words across trials. Activation passes from primary visual cortex (activated at approximately 100 msec after word presentation), to left anteroventral occipital ( approximately 180 msec), to cortex in and near Wernicke's ( approximately 210 msec) and then Broca's ( approximately 370 msec) areas. In addition, a posteroventral temp…

Rapid invisible frequency tagging (RIFT) does not evoke intermodulation components in the neural response.

The human visual system performs nonlinear integrative operations at multiple stages of visual information processing. For instance, integrating parts of visual stimuli into a coherent object involves coordinated neural processing along the visual hierarchy. However, it remains uncertain whether visual integration manifests in a nonlinear neural response, particularly through intermodulation components in the power spectrum. In this study, we used a visual motion paradigm combined with rapid invisible frequency tagging (RIFT) and magnetoencephalography (MEG) to explore nonlinear characteristic…

Enhancing Fetal Brain Imaging: ALPS-FMEG Technique Achieves Accurate Signal Extraction by Mitigating Movement Artifacts.

PURPOSE: Fetal magnetoencephalography (fMEG) enables non-invasive monitoring of fetal brain function with high temporal resolution. However, how can we isolate low signal-to-noise ratio signals of the developing brain when disruptive artifacts arise from maternal and fetal movements? Addressing this challenge is critical for understanding brain development. We present Advanced Localization and Processing of fMEG Signals based on Maternal and Gross fetal body Movement Exclusion (ALPS-FMEG), a MATLAB-based framework that improves fetal brain signals by removing fetal and maternal movement artifa…
