Primary intraosseous carcinoma of the mandible with probable origin in an odontogenic cyst.

Primary intraosseous carcinoma of the jaws (PIOC) is an uncommon lesion, but may not be as rare as commonly believed. Since the putative source of the epithelium giving rise to an intraosseous carcinoma is the epithelium involved in odontogenesis, these lesions are often designated as odontogenic carcinomas. These tumors may theoretically arise (1) from the lining of odontogenic cysts, (2) from other epithelial odontogenic tumors, or (3) de novo from presumed odontogenic rests. While not included in most classifications of PIOC, it appears logical to also include intraosseous mucoepidermoid ca

Interim reconstruction and space maintenance of mandibular continuity defects preceding definitive osseous reconstruction.

The use of space maintenance in mandibular defects as an interim measure before definitive osseous reconstruction may prevent problems associated with delayed reconstruction including increased technical difficulty, contracture of soft tissues that limits the volume of the final reconstruction, and the potential for iatrogenic injury to adjacent anatomical structures. The use of a condyle/ramus spacer made of medical grade, ultrahigh-molecular-weight polyethylene, and a flexible body spacer made of high quality, inert, non-toxic medical and food grade silicone rubber, was tested in 38 patients

Lip-split mandibulectomy versus lip-mandible preservation technique for oral and oropharyngeal cancer: a systematic review and meta-analysis of comparative studies.

BACKGROUND: Many studies have compared lip-splitting mandibulotomy (LSM) and lip-mandible preservation (LMP) techniques in oral and oropharyngeal cancer (OOPC) patients with inconsistent conclusions. Evidence-based recommendations for the optimal surgical approach for treating OOPC are lacking. METHODS: The Cochrane Library, Pubmed, Embase, Web of Science, WAN-FANG, CQVIP, and China National Knowledge Infrastructure were systematically searched to identify studies that compared LSM versus LMP for OOPC. An additional search of the gray literature was performed using Google Scholar, OpenGrey an

Prostate cancer presenting as an oral swelling-A case report.

Tumour metastasis to the jaw is an uncommon finding. When it does present, it is usually evidence of widespread metastatic disease and represents an unfavourable prognostic indicator. The clinical presentation of metastatic disease in the jaw can vary and may occur in the oral soft tissues, subcutaneous tissues adjacent to bone, mandible or maxillary alveolus and can mimic dental pathology. The radiographic appearance of metastatic disease is most commonly an expansive, lytic lesion with irregular borders. This case report describes the presentation of an otherwise medically well 76-year-old m

Bilateral Masticator Space Metastasis of Breast Cancer Mimicking Abscess.

Metastasis to the masticator space and mandible is very rare. The most common origin in women is breast cancer. Cystic metastases may radiologically mimic abscess. Definitive diagnosis can be made histopathologically. The prognosis of these patients is very poor and early diagnosis is important. Therefore, metastasis should be considered in the differential diagnosis of oral lesions.

A case of sclerosing odontogenic carcinoma of the mandible with a review of the literature.

Sclerosing odontogenic carcinoma (SOC) is a very rare malignant odontogenic tumor characterized by sclerotic stroma and single-file cord-like tumor cell structures. A 38-year-old man presented with extraoral swelling and right mental region paralysis. Panoramic radiography revealed an ill-defined radiolucent lesion extending from the right mandibular ramus to the right lower canine. Magnetic resonance imaging showed tumor invasion into the right inferior alveolar nerve and masseter muscle. Hemimandibulectomy, bilateral neck dissection, and mandibular reconstruction were performed using a rectu

A Comparison Study of Outcomes and Complications Between Marginal Mandibulectomy With or Without Additional Mandibulotomy in Tongue Cancers.

BACKGROUND: Marginal mandibulectomy with or without additional mandibulotomy could represent the alternatives to avoid segmental mandibulectomy in carefully selected tongue cancers. AIM AND OBJECTIVES: This study investigated a subgroup of tongue cancers with suspected involvement to the alveolar bone because of the shallow and deformed mouth floor. We aimed to compare the functional outcomes, postoperative complications, and disease control efficacy between the 2 different marginal mandibulectomy approaches, with or without additional mandibulotomy. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A retrospective st

Life-threatening mandibular angle gigantic osteoma presenting with severe dyspnoea.

Osteoma is a benign osteogenic tumour. Solitary osteoma of the jaws usually involves the mandible and commonly remains asymptomatic. Purpose of this article is to report a case of life-threatening gigantic mandibular osteoma in an edentulous woman in her 70s developed in the lingual side of the mandibular angle presenting at emergency department with dyspnoea and discuss the correct management of the patient and the surgical approach for space occupying mass in the pharapharyngeal space.

Critical evaluation of the radiological and clinical features of adenomatoid odontogenic tumour.

OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to evaluate the radiological and clinical features of adenomatoid odontogenic tumours (AOTs). METHODS: A total of 272 cases (267 from the English-language literature and 5 new cases) were analysed with special emphasis on their radiological features. RESULTS: The patients' ages at time of diagnosis ranged from 3 years to 82 years (mean 18.4 years). The maxilla-to-mandible ratio was 1.7:1. Mandibular lesions were significantly more frequent among patients older than 16 years (p = 0.032). Expansion of the cortex was significantly more prominent among patie

Parathyroid carcinoma: A rare case with mandibular brown tumor.

Parathyroid carcinoma constitutes less than 1 % of primary hyperparathyroidism. The male to female ratio is approximately equal and the mean age at presentation is 40 years. In about half of the patients there is a palpable cervical mass, and serum calcium level is usually above 14 mg/dl. In a case report we present a 21-year-old man with a non-tender, non-mobile bulging mandibular mass. He suffered from fatigue, recent weight loss, hoarseness, polydipsia, polyuria, hematuria, recurrent renal stones and bouts of constipation and diarrhea. A mandibular biopsy confirmed brown tumor. Serum calciu

Synchronous ameloblastoma and orthokeratinized odontogenic cyst of the mandible.

The simultaneous occurrence of ameloblastomas with odontogenic cysts or other non-odontogenic lesions have already been described as combined lesions. However, we are unaware of any report in the English literature of simultaneous occurrence of ameloblastoma and orthokeratinized odontogenic cyst (OOC) occurring as completely distinct lesions. This report shows a case of synchronous ameloblastoma and OOC, located on posterior regions of the mandible, but in distinct sides.

Periapical ameloblastoma--a case report.

Ameloblastomas, although often benign, are locally aggressive odontogenic lesions. Presentation of this lesion as a pericoronal radiolucency associated with an impacted tooth is well documented. Presentation of this lesion as a solitary periapical radiolucency associated with a non-impacted tooth however, is rare. Periapical presentation of this lesion may confuse practitioners.

Epithelial odontogenic ghost cell tumour of the mandibular gingiva.

The epithelial odontogenic ghost cell tumour (EOGCT) is considered as a solid 'neoplastic' variant of the calcifying odontogenic cyst and is an uncommon lesion for which various names have been proposed over the years. We describe here an extraosseous case occurring on the edentulous mandibular gingiva in the right bicuspid area of a 70-year-old woman. The lesion was a painless nodule that appeared clinically as a hyperplastic mass, which was considered to be of reactive nature. Radiographic examination showed a localised resorption of the underlying mandibular bone. The tumour was excised; th

Curettage combined with bone cavity opening reduces recurrence of the mandibular conventional ameloblastoma and effectively preserves the mandible: a retrospective study.

BACKGROUND: Patients with mandibular conventional ameloblastoma undergoing radical surgical treatment experience greater trauma and often find it challenging to accept, whereas conservative therapy is associated with a higher recurrence rate. In this study, we have improved traditional conservative treatment for mandibular conventional ameloblastoma by curettage combined with bone cavity opening (Cur/BCO). This retrospective study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of the Cur/BCO treatment by comparing its recurrence rate and bone mineral density (BMD) growth rate with the traditional conserv
