Maternal smoking and environmental tobacco smoke exposure and the risk of allergic diseases in Japanese infants: the Osaka Maternal and Child Health Study.

PURPOSE: It remains controversial whether environmental tobacco smoke increases the risk of allergic diseases. The present prospective cohort study examined whether in utero exposure to maternal smoking and postnatal exposure to environmental tobacco smoke were associated with the development of wheeze, asthma, and atopic eczema in Japanese infants. METHODS: Study subjects included 763 infants. Data were obtained through the use of questionnaires completed by the mother during pregnancy and at 2 to 9 and 16 to 24 months postdelivery. Information regarding maternal smoking during pregnancy and

Mandated supporting, not reporting: Reimagining maternal health care for women who use drugs.

This study examines how carceral logics shape maternal healthcare for pregnant women who use drugs. Through qualitative interviews with 21 women and 14 providers in Florida, we explore how punitive surveillance, via mandatory reporting and child welfare investigations, disrupts prenatal care and exacerbates stigma. We find that actual and anticipated involvement of child welfare services (CWS) inadvertently operates as an extension of poverty governance. Participants described deep fear of CWS, particularly newborn removal, as a central reason for avoiding prenatal care. Many reported dehumani…

Prolactin in high-metabolic risk pregnancies: Associations with maternal obesity and metabolic health.

INTRODUCTION: Low prolactin levels during pregnancy have been linked to adverse maternal metabolic health. We examined pregnancy prolactin levels in relation to maternal metabolic characteristics within an ethnically diverse cohort at high metabolic risk. MATERIAL AND METHODS: In this observational cohort study, pregnant women (n = 130) with metabolic risk factors were characterized in early pregnancy, with sampling of serum prolactin and metabolic parameters. Fifty-four women with gestational diabetes consented to serial profiling across pregnancy. Univariable and multivariable simple and mi

Predicting Infant Sleep Patterns From Postpartum Maternal Mental Health Measures: Machine Learning Approach.

BACKGROUND: Postpartum maternal mental health (MMH) symptoms, including depression, anxiety, and childbirth-related post-traumatic stress disorder, are known to influence infant sleep trajectories. While previous research has examined their individual and combined associations, the predictive utility of these MMH symptoms for the early identification of infant sleep problems through machine learning (ML) remains understudied. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to examine whether postpartum MMH measures can predict infant sleep outcomes during the first year of life. The analysis focused on 2 clinica

Unhealthy Diets, Unhealthy Futures: How Modern Eating Patterns Endanger Maternal and Offspring Health.

Ultra-processed foods (UPFs) are increasingly prevalent in global diets and have been consistently associated with adverse health outcomes. Their consumption during sensitive life stages, such as pregnancy and early childhood, raises significant public health concerns due to potential intergenerational effects. This narrative review critically examines the impact of UPF consumption during pregnancy and early life, with a focus on maternal and child health outcomes, including alterations in gut microbiota composition. Accumulating evidence indicates that UPF consumption is linked to increased r

Changes in maternal health care utilization in Afghanistan, 2010-2011 to 2022-2023.

Background: Maternal healthcare in Afghanistan remains a challenge as it has the highest maternal mortality rate around the globe. Over the last decade, political instability has affected Afghanistan's health system and utilization of healthcare services. Objectives: The study examines the utilization of maternal healthcare services in Afghanistan during 2010-2011 to 2022-2023 to determine the changes of maternal health over the time. Methodology: To achieve the study objective, data has been utilized from two rounds of Multiple Indicator Cluster Surveys (MICS4-2010-11 and MICS6-2022-23). Resu…

Prematurity, temperament, physical wellbeing and maternal mental health in a low-income sample.

Preterm birth (i.e., before 37-week gestation) is a global health concern, with most prematurity occurring between 32 - 36.6 weeks gestation, yet research has primarily focused on extreme prematurity (i.e., before 32-weeks gestation). As such, less is known about the developmental and psychological outcomes associated with moderate-to-late preterm birth. This study examines how infant temperament and infant physical wellbeing are associated with maternal mental health, and whether moderate-late prematurity moderates these relationships in a low-income sample. Using a matched case-control desig

Maternal and infant health during the COVID-19 pandemic - A Pennsylvania Study Protocol.

BACKGROUND: Pregnant people are vulnerable to more severe outcomes of COVID-19 compared with their non-pregnant counterparts. Research is needed to systematically test the degree to which COVID-19 during pregnancy increases the risk for adverse maternal, perinatal, and infant health and development outcomes and whether social determinants of health or psychological/psychosocial health outcomes confound or intensify the risk. This protocol paper describes a prospective cohort study using electronic health record (EHR) and patient-reported data from four large health systems in Pennsylvania to e

How do maternal socioeconomic and behavioral patterns affect oral health in early childhood?

STUDY DESIGN: A prospective longitudinal observational cohort study. COHORT SELECTION: The data analyzed were derived from a comprehensive observational study on BRISA prenatal cohort conducted in São Luís City, Brazil, between 2010 and 2013. A convenience sample included pregnant women recruited from both public and private prenatal health services in the city. To participate in the study, women needed to have undergone an obstetric ultrasound before the 20th week of pregnancy to estimate gestational age. Multiple pregnancies were excluded. Initially, the pregnant women were interviewed and

Maternal pregnancy diet quality, night eating, and offspring metabolic health: the GUSTO study.

BACKGROUND: We investigated the understudied influence of maternal diet quality, food timing, and their interactions during pregnancy on offspring metabolic health. METHODS: Maternal diet at 26-28 weeks' gestation was assessed using a 24-h recall and adherence to the modified-healthy-eating-index (HEI-SGP) reflects diet quality. Predominant night-eating (PNE) was defined as consuming >50% of total daily energy intake from 19:00 to 06:59. Outcomes were offspring composite metabolic syndrome score and its components measured at age 6 years. Multivariable linear regressions adjusted for relevant

Maternal exercise preserves offspring cardiovascular health via oxidative regulation of the ryanodine receptor.

OBJECTIVE: The intrauterine environment during pregnancy is a critical factor in the development of obesity, diabetes, and cardiovascular disease in offspring. Maternal exercise prevents the detrimental effects of a maternal high fat diet on the metabolic health in adult offspring, but the effects of maternal exercise on offspring cardiovascular health have not been thoroughly investigated. METHODS: To determine the effects of maternal exercise on offspring cardiovascular health, female mice were fed a chow (C; 21% kcal from fat) or high-fat (H; 60% kcal from fat) diet and further subdivided

Cell-free DNA methylation-based preeclampsia prediction: A journey to improve maternal health.

Presymptomatic prediction of preeclampsia (PE) is crucial to enable early prophylactic treatment. Current screening tools are either complex or lack predictive value. We recently demonstrated that cell-free DNA methylation can be leveraged to predict early-onset PE in 57% at a 10% false positive rate. Importantly, this minimally invasive screening test can be implemented as an add-on to current widespread noninvasive prenatal aneuploidy screening. Here, we highlight the pitfalls and promising prospects of this research.
