OBJECTIVE: This study aims to compare the effects of fast and slow expansion on nasal cavity structure.
METHODS: A total of 40 patients were selected and randomly divided into two groups. Cone-beam computer tomography (CBCT) was obtained before and after surgery and used for comparing the changes in nasal structure before and after treatment.
RESULTS: Fast expansion had resulted in greater changes in the basilar and nasal bone arch extension structures than slow expansion. No significant difference at maxillary width and nasal parenchyma.
CONCLUSIONS: Rapid expansion therapy has more benefi…

To study the influence of distraction osteogenesis (DO) on the maxillary growth as first-stage treatment of palatal defect. The uniform palate defect experimental animal models (21 miniature pigs) were established surgically. Then animals were randomly divided into negative control group (A, n = 6), conventional surgery group (B, n = 6), and distraction osteogenesis group (C, n = 9) respectively. The group A underwent none treatment as control group, the group B were undergoing a conventional defect repair surgery, and the group C were undergoing a distraction osteogenesis treatment. Cone beam…

The aim of this study was to investigate the anatomical features of the maxillae and vomer in patients with bilateral cleft lip and palate (BCLP). Craniofacial measurements of 24 adult BCLP patients (GB) and 32 normal adult controls (GN) were carried out. We measured the width and length of the maxillae, their relative positions with respect to the coronal plane passing through the basion, and the volume, length, cross-sectional area, and mean width of the vomer. Between-group differences were assessed using independent-sample t tests. Finite element models (FEMs) were used to explore the bite…

INTRODUCTION: The adenomatoid odontogenic tumor (AOT) associated with odontoma has been described as a new entity with overlapping features of adenomatoid-like structures and odontoma. Presentation of the case: We report the second case of AOT associated with odontoma in the posterior maxillary region. A 22-year-old patient presented expansion of the vestibular and palatine cortical wall of maxilla. Radiographic examination and computed tomography confirmed erosion of maxillary walls, root resorption, displacement of a neighboring tooth and radiopacities within the lesion. Histopathological an…

OBJECTIVE: Eruption of posterior teeth, including premolars and molars in the mandible rather than in the maxilla, is accepted as an accurate reference for age determination of deer. In water deer, Hydropotes inermis, the eruption age of mandibular molars has been described in two studies, but the ages were inconsistent with each other. In this study, we aimed to confirm the eruption age of mandibular posterior teeth for the accurate age determination of water deer and to evaluate the efficacy of maxillary posterior teeth for the age determination of deer.
DESIGN: The eruption of mandibular a…

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this report is to describe symptoms that can suggest the presence of a patent nasopalatine duct and to illustrate three cases.
SUMMARY: Patent nasopalatine ducts connecting the oral cavity with the nasal cavity are extremely rare. This malformation can be considered a developmental abnormality. Clinically, patent nasopalatine ducts appear as single or double spherical or oval apertures lateral or posterior to the incisive papilla. This type of anatomical malformation can be associated with an unclear pain sensation in the anterior maxillary region, which may be misinterp…

BACKGROUND: Facial composite tissue allotransplantation has recently become a surgical option. The maxilla, which forms the upper jaw and plays an important role in facial allotransplantation, consists of the maxillary and facial arteries. The maxillary artery is located deep within the tissue and considered the main artery of the maxilla; however, the facial artery is easy to access. The objective of this study was to examine the territories of the maxillary and facial arteries within the maxilla.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: We excised and examined 22 maxillae. Of these, 18 were injected with lat…

Juvenile aggressive ossifying fibroma is a rare benign but locally aggressive tumor with high recurrent potentials. Juvenile aggressive ossifying fibroma poses diagnostic challenges because of its rapidly growing nature. A 7-years-old female child presented to the pediatric unit of our institution with a 9-month history of right maxillary tumor. An initial diagnosis of Burkitt's lymphoma was made and the child has several courses of chemotherapy without adequate histologic confirmation., She was later referred to the maxillofacial unit where the appropriate diagnosis and treatment were institu…

Keratocystic odontogenic tumors (KCOT) - previously termed odontogenic keratocysts (OKC) - are characterized by aggressive behavior and a high rate of recurrence. Histopathologically, the basal layer of KCOT shows a higher cell proliferation rate and increased expression of anti-apoptosis genes. Clinically, KCOT is frequently involved in the mandibular posterior region but is not common in the posterior maxilla. However, it should be noted that due to its expansive characteristics, KCOT involved near the maxillary sinus could easily expand to an enormous size and occupy the entire maxilla. To …
