Congenital hydrocephalus secondary to prenatal intracranial haemorrhage.

A high incidence of intracranial haemorrhage in utero of uncertain aetiology has been previously identified as an important cause of stillbirth in infants of immigrant Pacific Islanders in New Zealand. Congenital hydrocephalus is now described as a consequence of intracranial haemorrhage in 2 stillborn Pacific Islander infants. A large intracerebral haemorrhage, hydrocephalus and hydrops in one infant was first recognized prenatally by ultrasonography and caused intrauterine death at 26 weeks' gestation. Severe hydrocephalus in the other infant was first identified just before labour at term b

Primary spontaneous mesencephalic hemorrhage.

The case histories of two patients with clinically diverse forms of the very rare entity primary, spontaneous mesencephalic hemorrhage are presented. Each exhibited characteristic mesencephalic signs and neuroimaging profiles. However, both patients differed markedly in their predisposing factors, state of arousal, memory, temporal course and functional residua. One patient was unique in displaying a normal level of alertness throughout his clinical course and an isolated retrograde amnesia. The latter sign suggests a role for mesencephalic reticular activation in long-term retrieval and illus

The determinant role of arterial hypertension in cardiac rhythm disturbances, both induced by electrical stimulation of the midbrain reticular formation in the cat.

The arrhythmogenic and hypertensive effect of electric stimulation of the midbrain reticular formation (MRF) is known. The aim of the present paper is to demonstrate that the hypertensive effect potentiates the arrhythmogenic effect. Ten semiacute experiments were carried out on curarized cats, stimulating the MRF by stereotoxically implanted electrodes. After stimulation complex cardiac rhythm disturbances developed (consisting in their order of appearance of tachycardia, bradycardia, ventricular extrasystoles and idioventricular paroxysmal tachycardia--IPT), as well as an increase in arteria

[Locked-in syndrome with bilateral midbrain infarcts--report of an autopsy].

A case of "Locked-in" syndrome with bilateral midbrain infarcts was reported. A 51-year-old man had a memory disturbance and a change of his personality after head trauma, and then became rapidly "Locked-in" state. He was quadriplegic and bulbar paralytic, but ocular movements were preserved. Left VAG showed the narrowing of the basilar artery and there was a striking anastomosis between the SCA and PICA. Neuropathological findings were as the following; 1) The lateral two third of bilateral cerebral peduncles were extensively infarcted. 2) There were contusion of the left frontal orbital surf

Malignant nerve sheath tumor of acoustic nerve.

A malignant nerve sheath tumor of the acoustic nerve was found in a 54-year-old man whose right acoustic nerve signs had shown gradual worsening during the previous five years. No stigmata of von Recklinghausen's disease were noted. The tumor at autopsy extensively involved the brain stem, cerebellar hemisphere, tentorium of cerebellum, and cerebral occipitotemporal lobe on the right side. Histologically, the tumor was characterized by extreme hypercellularity, pleomorphism, and high mitotic activity. Ultrastructurally, there was an external lamina around the interdigitated cytoplasm of the tu

Quadriparesis and nuclear oculomotor palsy with total bilateral ptosis mimicking coma: a mesencephalic 'locked-in syndrome"?

Upper lid and vertical eye movements are usually preserved in patients with the "locked-in" syndrome, a condition manifested by anarthria, spastic quadriparesis, and intact mental function, and caused by lesions in the ventral portion of the pons. We describe a presumed mesencephalic "locked-in" syndrome in a patient who had total bilateral ptosis at the onset of his disease and later on experienced complete bilateral oculomotor nerve paralysis.

The architecture and dynamics of brain networks represent the structural and functional organizational principles underlying all cognitive p … eenness centrality, the telencephalon showed moderate node strength and lowest betweenness, and the mesencephalon displayed the lowest node strength but intermediate betweenness. These patterns align with functional specialization. Furthermore, sex differences emerged in network topology, particularly within theta and beta bands, indicating sexually dimorphic a …

Transcranial sonography depicts a larger substantia nigra echogenic area in renal transplant patients on calcineurin inhibitors than on rapamycin.

BACKGROUND: After kidney transplantation neurologic manifestations may develop, including Parkinson's disease (PD). An enlarged substantia nigra (SN) by transcranial sonography has been recognized as a marker of PD. METHODS: In renal transplant recipients (RTRs = 95) and controls (n = 20), measurement of mesencephalon, SN, third ventricle, spleen and carotid intima-media thickness (cIMT) and middle cerebral artery (MCA), kidney and spleen arteries Doppler resistive index (RI) were performed. RESULTS: RTRs had larger SN, third ventricle and cIMT and higher renal RI than controls. The SN was l…

Genetic identification of tissues and cell types underlying attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder.

BACKGROUND: Genome-wide association studies (GWASs) have identified numerous genetic variants associated with attention-deficit/hyperactivit … nes results showed that the ADHD risk genes were mainly enriched in brain tissue, especially in the mesencephalon, visual cortex, and frontal lobe regions. Further cell-type-specific analysis suggested that ADHD risk genes were highly expressed in excitatory neurons. CONCLUSION: The study showed that the etiology of ADHD is associated with excitatory neurons i …

After a comprehensive diagnostic workup, hyperintensities in the bilateral basal ganglia, mesencephalon, pons, and cerebellum on T1-weighted images were found, which demonstrated hypointensity on susceptibility-weighted imaging. Furthermore, an increased blood ammonia level and diffuse slow-wave activity in EEG were detected. The patient had a 7-year …

Chronic MPTP treatment reproduces in baboons the differential vulnerability of mesencephalic dopaminergic neurons observed in Parkinson's disease.

Chronic administration of 1-methyl-4-phenyl-1,2,3,6-tetrahydropyridine (MPTP) to baboons was shown previously to result in a motor syndrome and a pattern of striatal dopaminergic fibre loss similar to those observed in idiopathic Parkinson's disease. In the present study, tyrosine hydroxylase-immunoreactive neurons were quantified in the mesencephalon of control (n = 4) and chronically MPTP-treated (n = 3) baboons. MPTP induced a significant reduction in neuronal cell density in the substantia nigra (63.8% reduction) and the ventral tegmental area (53.1%). Within the substantia nigra, obvious …

A new type of tachykinin binding site in the rat brain characterized by specific binding of a labeled eledoisin derivative.

A new ligand for investigating tachykinin-binding site subtypes was synthesized by coupling the 125I-Bolton and Hunter reagent to eledoisin … rebral cortex and hypothalamus; intermediate in the hippocampus, striatum, and thalamus; low in the mesencephalon, septum, and substantia nigra; and absent in the cerebellum. Comparison of these data with those previously obtained for 125I-BHSP binding to synaptosomes indicated that 125I-BHE-labeled binding sites differ markedly from those of 125I-BHSP-labeled …
