Biogeochemistry of Lead. Its Release to the Environment and Chemical Speciation.

Lead (Pb) is a metal that is not essential for life processes and proves acutely toxic to most organisms. Compared to other metals Pb is rather immobile in the environment but still its biogeochemical cycling is greatly perturbed by human activities. In this review we present a summary of information describing the physical and chemical properties of Pb, its distribution in crustal materials, and the processes, both natural and anthropogenic, that contribute to the metal's mobilization in the biosphere. The relatively high volatility of Pb metal, low melting point, its large ionic radius, and

Metal-organic frameworks doped with metal ions for efficient sterilization: Enhanced photocatalytic activity and photothermal effect.

Photocatalytic and photothermal disinfection is a promising strategy for addressing the challenges of environmental microbial contamination. In this work, we choose a metal-organic framework (MOF), ZIF-8, as an inexpensive and ideal model for metal ion doping, and manipulate the band structure, thermal vibration in molecules, charge distribution, and robustness of the metal-ligand coordination bond of the metal-ion-doped ZIFs for their use in photo-disinfection. The effects of their absorption edge, rate of the photo-induced temperature rise, transient photocurrent response, photo-generated re

Roxarsone desorption from the surface of goethite by competitive anions, phosphate and hydroxide ions: Significance of the presence of metal ions.

Aromatic organoarsenical roxarsone (ROX) is a common additive for livestock feed. This arsenic containing pollutant could be discharged into the environment through agricultural application of animal manure, and pose potential threats to both humans and the wider environment. In this study, the influence of pH, competing anions and metal ions on the adsorption and desorption of ROX on goethite were investigated in order to understand their mobility in the environment. Both hydroxide ions and phosphate are common substances in the environment, and both are potential competing anions for ROX. Ou

Photoinduced electron transfer from semiconductor quantum dots to metal oxide nanoparticles.

Quantum dot-metal oxide junctions are an integral part of next-generation solar cells, light emitting diodes, and nanostructured electronic arrays. Here we present a comprehensive examination of electron transfer at these junctions, using a series of CdSe quantum dot donors (sizes 2.8, 3.3, 4.0, and 4.2 nm in diameter) and metal oxide nanoparticle acceptors (SnO(2), TiO(2), and ZnO). Apparent electron transfer rate constants showed strong dependence on change in system free energy, exhibiting a sharp rise at small driving forces followed by a modest rise further away from the characteristic re

Boosted visible-light-induced photo-Fenton degradation of organic pollutants over a novel direct Z-scheme NH2-MIL-125(Ti)@FeOCl heterojunction catalyst.

Improving the charge separation, charge transfer, and effective utilization is crucial in a photocatalysis system. Herein, we prepared a novel direct Z-scheme NH2-MIL-125(Ti)@FeOCl (Ti-MOF@FeOCl) composite photocatalyst through a simple method. The prepared composite catalyst was utilized in the photo-Fenton degradation of Rhodamine B (RhB) and ciprofloxacin (CIP). The Ti-MOF@FeOCl (10FeTi-MOF) catalyst exhibited the highest catalytic performance and degraded 99.1 and 66% of RhB and CIP, respectively. However, the pure NH2-MIL-125(Ti) (Ti-MOF) and FeOCl catalysts achieved only 50 and 92% of Rh

Cr(VI) photocatalytic reduction: effects of simultaneous organics oxidation and of gold nanoparticles photodeposition on TiO2.

Commercial TiO(2) samples with different phase composition and surface area were tested as photocatalysts in the photoinduced reduction of Cr(VI) in aqueous suspensions at pH 3.7 under UV-visible light irradiation. This reaction was also coupled with the simultaneous photocatalytic oxidation of the pollutant azo dye Acid Orange 8 (AO8) and of formic acid, acting as hole scavengers. The co-presence of oxidizable and reducible species ensured better separation of photogenerated charge carriers, resulting in a higher rate of both organics' oxidation and Cr(VI) reduction, especially in the case of

The empirical correlation between size and two-photon absorption cross section of CdSe and CdTe quantum dots.

The tuning of CdSe quantum dot (QDs) sizes, and consequently their corresponding two-photon absorption (TPA) cross section, has been systematically investigated. As the size (diameter) of the quantum dots increases, the TPA cross section is found to be empirically related via a power-law proportionality of 3.5+/-0.5 and 5.6+/-0.7 to the diameters of CdSe and CdTe QDs, respectively. The results are tentatively rationalized via a theoretical model of two-photon excitation properties in a system incorporating excitons and defects.

Photoinduced reduction of nitro(hetero)arenes with earth-abundant FeCl3 promoter.

The reduction of nitroaromatic compounds to aromatic amines is a crucial step in the production of pharmaceuticals, dyes, and other materials. In this study, we used the earth-abundant iron salt FeCl3 as a promoter to efficiently reduce various (hetero)aryl nitro compounds under visible light irradiation at 395 nm and room temperature. This method, with its gentle reaction conditions and wide substrate range, effectively avoids reliance on precious metals and harsh conditions common in traditional methods. Its versatility is demonstrated by its ability to reduce a broad spectrum of nitro compo

Environmental Exposures and Oxidative Stress in Retinal and Optic Nerve Diseases: Mechanisms, Consequences, and Therapeutic Opportunities.

Oxidative stress is a key contributing and convergent pathogenic mechanism linked to retinal and optic nerve diseases including age-related macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, and glaucoma. The retina is highly susceptible to redox imbalance due to intense mitochondrial activity, oxygen consumption, and light exposure. While endogenous drivers are well recognized, the contribution of environmental exposure to retinal oxidative injury remains incompletely defined. This review uniquely integrates emerging environmental contaminants with canonical oxidative stress pathways. We examine how

A flyer-impact technique for measuring viscosity of metal under shock compression.

A flyer-impact technique, different from the explosive method of [Sakharov et al., Sov. Phys. Dokl. 9, 1091 (1965)], is developed to investigate the viscosity of shocked metals. The shock wave with a front of sinusoidal perturbation is induced by the sinusoidal profile of the impact surface of the sample by use of two-stage light-gas gun. The oscillatory damping process of the perturbation amplitude is monitored by electric pins. Two damping curves (perturbation amplitude relative to its initial value versus propagated distance relative to the wavelength of sinusoidal perturbation) of aluminum

Detection of aluminum oxide and polyethylene wear particles from joint endoprostheses using cathodoluminescence and x-ray analysis in SEM.

A highly sensitive method to localize aluminum oxide or polyethylene wear particles in biological tissues is presented. Using the scanning electron microscope (SEM) with a special cathodoluminescence detector system, small amounts of these foreign materials can be visualized in simple frozen sections by their bright luminescence, even at low magnifications (200X). At higher magnifications, a differentiation of free as well as phagocytized aluminum oxide and polyethylene particles can be made due to their different behavior in light emission. In addition, aluminum oxide such as other metals can

Maximizing perovskite electroluminescence with ordered 3D/2D heterojunction.

Metal halide perovskite light-emitting diodes (PeLEDs) have demonstrated excellent external quantum efficiency (EQE), easy colour tunability and low-cost processability, making them promising next-generation display techniques1-3. However, PeLEDs still underperform compared with organic light-emitting diodes (LEDs) with an EQE of about 40% because of insufficient charge confinement and defect-caused non-radiative recombination on the film surface. Here we report a spontaneously formed 3D/2D vertically oriented perovskite heterojunction by means of a simple one-step spin-coating method, which c

Exciton-Polariton Valley Hall Effect in Monolayer Semiconductors on Plasmonic Metasurface.

Excitons in monolayer transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) possess the valley degree of freedom (DOF), which is regarded as a pseudospin (in addition to charge and spin DOF) and can be addressed optically by using polarized light. Incorporating monolayer TMDs into an optical microcavity in the strong coupling regime further enables the formation of valley polaritons that are half-light and half-matter quasiparticles with addressable spin and momentum through the spin-orbit interactions of light, in analogy with the spin-Hall effect in electronic systems. By placing monolayer TMDs on a plasm

Nonlinear polarization instability in cubic-quintic plasmonic nanocomposites.

We report a study of the nonlinear birefringence induced in a metal-dielectric nanocomposite due to the contributions of third- and fifth-order optical nonlinearities. A theoretical model describing the evolution of the light polarization state of a confined laser beam propagating through the nonlinear medium is developed with basis on a pair of coupled dissipative cubic-quintic nonlinear differential equations related to the two orthogonal polarizations of the optical field. As a proof-of-principle experiment we demonstrate the control of the light beam polarization in a silver-nanocolloid by

Spin effects in metal halide perovskite semiconductors.

Metal halide perovskite semiconductors (MHSs) are emerging as potential candidates for opto-spintronic applications due to their strong spin-orbit coupling, favorable light emission characteristics and highly tunable structural symmetry. Compared to the significant advancements in the optoelectronic applications of MHSs, the exploration and control of spin-related phenomena remain in their early stages. In this minireview, we provide an overview of the various spin effects observed both in achiral and chiral MHSs, emphasizing their potential for controlling interconversion between spin, charge
