Neurological manifestation of methyl bromide intoxication.

Methyl bromide is a highly toxic gas with poor olfactory warning properties. It is widely used as insecticidal fumigant for dry foodstuffs and can be toxic to central and peripheral nervous systems. Most neurological manifestations of methyl bromide intoxication occur from inhalation. Acute toxicity characterized by headache, dizziness, abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting and visual disturbances. Tremor, convulsion, unconsciousness and permanent brain damage may occur in severe poisoning. Chronic exposure can cause neuropathy, pyramidal and cerebellar dysfunction, as well as neuropsychiatric dist

[Total and methyl mercury contents in arthropods].

We researched mercury contents in plants and arthropods collected from the river banks in mercury polluted areas. The results show that total mercury (T-Hg) and methyl mercury (Me-Hg) in Locusta migratoria manilensis and Acrida chinensis are 0.032 - 0.402 mg x kg(-1), 0.023 - 0.362 mg x kg(-1) and 0.003 - 0.031 mg x kg(-1), 0.004 - 0.015 mg x kg(-1) while the proportion of Me-Hg to T-Hg are 3.5% - 49.7% and 2.0% - 44.4%. T-Hg in arthropods is higher than that a magnitude in non-polluted areas. As primary consumers, mercury contents in Locusta migratoria manilensis and Acrida chinensis are lowe

Methyl parathion: a review of health effects.

Methyl parathion is an organophosphorus (OP) insecticide with insecticidal properties derived from acetylcholinesterase (AChE) inhibition; this same property is also the root of its toxicity in humans. Poisoning with methyl parathion leads to cholinergic overstimulation with signs of toxicity including sweating, dizziness, vomiting, diarrhea, convulsions, cardiac arrest, respiratory arrest, and, in extreme cases, death. Reports of methyl parathion intoxication, usually seen only in field pesticide applicators, have increased throughout the United States as a result of unauthorized application

Methyl mercaptan production by periodontal bacteria.

Oral malodour is principally caused by volatile sulphur compounds (VSC) such as hydrogen sulphide, methyl mercaptan and dimethyl sulphide. Methyl mercaptan is highly toxic, and its presence within a periodontal pocket suggests involvement in the induction and/or progression of periodontal disease. Methyl mercaptan is produced from L-methionine by L-methionine- alpha -deamino- gamma -mercaptomethane-lyase (METase). METase catalyses the alpha,gamma-eliminating reaction of L-methionine, which results in the release of alpha-ketobutyrate, methyl mercaptan and ammonia. Although methyl mercaptan is

DNA damaging activity of methyl parathion.

14C-methyl parathion was covalently bound to DNA, RNA and proteins of various rat and mouse organs 22 hr after i.p. injection. Covalent binding index (CBI) to liver DNA was low in both species and typical of weak initiators. The labelings of RNA and proteins from different organs of both species was slightly higher than DNA binding. No interaction with brain nucleic acids was observed (CBI detection limit: 2.8). The in vitro enzyme-mediated interaction of methyl parathion with calf thymus DNA was mainly performed by rodent liver microsomes and, to a lesser extent, by microsomes from mouse kidn

Methyl chloroform: impact on stratospheric ozone.

Regulations to limit the use of trichloroethylene as a degreasing solvent have led to an increased use of the more photochemically inert solvent methyl chloroform as a substitute. Model calculations show that about 15 percent of the methyl chloroform released into the atmosphere will reach the stratosphere. Time scenarios based on past production figures and reasonable projections for future release rates lead to a steady-state ozone depletion due to this solvent about 20 percent as large as those resulting from the continuous release of chlorofluoromethanes at 1973 rates.

N-METHYL GROUPS IN BACTERIAL LIPIDS.

Goldfine, Howard (Harvard Medical School, Boston, Mass.), and Martha E. Ellis. N-methyl groups in bacterial lipids. J. Bacteriol. 87:8-15. 1964.-The ability of bacteria to synthesize lecithin was examined by measuring the incorporation of the methyl group of methionine into the water-soluble moieties obtained on acid hydrolysis of bacterial lipids. Of 21 species examined, mostly of the order Eubacteriales, only 2, Agrobacterium radiobacter and A. rhizogenes, incorporated the methyl group of methionine into lipid-bound choline. Evidence was also obtained for the formation of lipid-bound N-methy

Methyl group donor‑resolved isotopic diagnostics reveal mechanistic diversity in UV‑driven methylation of Hg(II).

Photochemical methylation of mercury (Hg) is difficult to isolate in nature. Here we show that short-wavelength UV-C (254 nm) selectively drives aqueous Hg(II)→MeHg photomethylation in the presence of low-molecular-weight organic compounds with different methyl group (acetone, acetic acid, acetaldehyde), whereas no MeHg forms under visible/UV-A/UV-B light. Gross 4-h yields reach 59-84 % (acetone), 25-40 % (acetic acid), and 38-66 % (acetaldehyde). Coupled concentration-isotope time series resolve large odd-mass-independent fractionation (odd-MIF; Δ199Hg up to 25 ‰) with donor-specific Δ199Hg/Δ…

Contrasting Effects of Methyl Jasmonate and Methyl Salicylate on Coffee Plant Defenses against the Southern Red Spider Mite.

Herbivory by mites often activates both jasmonate and salicylate signaling pathways in plants. While the role of jasmonic acid (JA) pathway in inducing plant defenses against mites is well established, the contribution of salicylic acid (SA) remains under debate. In previous studies, we found that herbivory by the mite Oligonychus ilicis (McGregor) (Acari: Tetranychidae) triggered the accumulation of both SA and JA, but increased plants susceptibility to subsequent herbivores. Here, we investigated the relative importance of SA and JA signaling pathways in coffee resistance to O. ilicis by app

Methyl-CpG-binding domain 2 mitigates osteoarthritis through Steap3 promoter methylation and chondrocyte ferroptosis regulation.

Extensive research has underscored the pivotal role of DNA methylation in the development of various diseases, including osteoarthritis (OA). DNA methylation is regulated by methylation writers, readers, and erasers. As a crucial methylation reader, methyl-CpG-binding domain2 (MBD2) has been implicated in modulating the occurrence and progression of multiple inflammatory diseases. This study aims to investigate whether MBD2 contributes to the pathogenesis of OA through its regulation of DNA methylation. Our study confirmed that MBD2 was increased in OA cartilage tissues from humans as well as …

O6-Methyguanine-DNA Methyl Transferase (MGMT) Promoter Methylation in Serum DNA of Iranian Patients with Colorectal Cancer.

Introduction: Colorectal cancer (CRC) is a leading cause of cancer deaths worldwide but current molecular targeted therapy is not providing major success in CRC treatment, so early detection by non-invasive methods continues to be vital. Aberrant methylation of CpG islands in promoter regions is associated with inactivation of various tumor suppressor genes. O6-methyguanine-DNA methyltransferase (MGMT) is a DNA repair enzyme that removes mutagenic and cytotoxic adducts from O6-guanine in DNA. Aberrant hypermethylation of the MGMT promoter has been associated with lack of mRNA expression, with …
