Macroparasite infection and mercury contamination as coupled stressors in Eastern oysters.

Contaminants and parasites are ubiquitous in aquatic environments and their interactions can have detrimental effects on host physiological and ecological responses. Yet, few studies have investigated the combined influence of chemical stress and parasite infections on bivalves. We studied the relationships between mercury (Hg) and methylmercury (MeHg) and macroparasite infections of pea crabs (Zaops ostreum) on Eastern oysters (Crassostrea virginica). Between 2022 and 2023, pea crabs (n = 95) were opportunistically collected during monthly sampling of oysters (n = 674) deployed at four coasta

Intra-day and inter-day variations of methylmercury and inorganic mercury concentrations in breast milk.

BACKGROUND: There is little information regarding the concentrations and variability of methylmercury (MeHg) in breast milk. This study examines the variations in the concentrations of total mercury (THg), MeHg, and inorganic mercury (IHg) in breast milk and suggests a method for collecting breast milk samples for MeHg research. METHODS: Breast milk samples were obtained from 11 lactating women, 3-5 months after birth. Mercury species in breast milk were measured by high-performance liquid chromatography with inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry. Breast milk was examined for foremilk

Screening and mechanistic study of organic foliar agents for reducing mercury and methylmercury in pakchoi.

Foliar application has demonstrated potential in mitigating the bioaccumulation of heavy metals. Nevertheless, limited research has focused on the effects of foliar application in alleviating mercury (Hg) stress, especially for the more toxic methylmercury (MeHg). In the present study, several organic acids, including the rarely reported tartaric acid (TA) were initially screened for their efficacy through in-situ pot experiment in a mining area. Among them, tartaric acid and humic acid (HA) were more effective in reducing Hg accumulation in pakchoi. with reduction rates of 46 % and 31 %, resp

Photochemical demethylation of methylmercury (MeHg) in aquatic systems: A review of MeHg species, mechanisms, and influencing factors.

Photodemethylation is the major pathway of methylmercury (MeHg) demethylation in surface water before uptake by the food chain, whose mechanisms and influence factors are still not completely understood. Here, we review the current knowledge on photodemethylation of MeHg and divide MeHg photolysis into three pathways: (1) direct photodemethylation, (2) free radical attack, and (3) intramolecular electron or energy transfer. In aquatic environments, dissolved organic matter is involved into all above pathways, and due to its complex compositions, properties and concentrations, DOM poses multipl

Mercury supply limits methylmercury production in paddy soils.

The neurotoxic methylmercury (MeHg) is a product of inorganic mercury (IHg) after microbial transformation. Yet it remains unclear whether microbial activity or IHg supply dominates Hg methylation in paddies, hotspots of MeHg formation. Here, we quantified the response of MeHg production to changes in microbial activity and Hg supply using 63 paddy soils under the common scenario of straw amendment, a globally prevalent agricultural practice. We demonstrate that the IHg supply is the limiting factor for Hg methylation in paddies. This is because IHg supply is generally low in soils and can lar

Methylmercury Effects on Birds: A Review, Meta-Analysis, and Development of Toxicity Reference Values for Injury Assessment Based on Tissue Residues and Diet.

Birds are used as bioindicators of environmental mercury (Hg) contamination, and toxicity reference values are needed for injury assessments. We conducted a comprehensive review, summarized data from 168 studies, performed a series of Bayesian hierarchical meta-analyses, and developed new toxicity reference values for the effects of methylmercury (MeHg) on birds using a benchmark dose analysis framework. Lethal and sublethal effects of MeHg on birds were categorized into nine biologically relevant endpoint categories and three age classes. Effective Hg concentrations where there was a 10% redu

Key factors influencing Hg levels and trends in unperturbed oligotrophic temperate and boreal lakes.

Mercury (Hg) is a toxic metal that presents a major risk to ecosystems, biota, human health, and remains a priority concern. In temperate and boreal lakes Hg and methylmercury (MMHg) are expected to vary as a function of atmospheric Hg deposition, lake water chemistry, catchment characteristics and climate variables. The aim of this study was to quantify Hg and MMHg in unperturbed oligotrophic lakes and to identify the factors controlling their distribution. We first hypothesized that lake Hg (and MMHg to lesser extent) spatial variations are linked to atmospheric deposition, catchment charact

Converting flooded rice to dry farming can alleviate MeHg accumulation in grains.

The study explored the impact of water management on rice cultivation in mercury-contaminated paddy soil. The objective was to analyze the characteristics of mercury translocation by converting flooded soils to dry farming (non-flooded) to alleviate mercury accumulation in rice grains. The experiment was conducted over three consecutive rice-growing seasons, employing two distinct water management models: a continuously flooded rice cultivation mode and a flooded rice planting mode in the first season, followed by a non-flooded rice farming mode in the second and third seasons. The results sho

Application of biochar and selenium together at low dose efficiently reduces mercury and methylmercury accumulation in rice grains.

Irrespective of cost and ecological risk, literatures have reported that both biochar and selenium (Se) alone at high application rate exhibited positive effects on decreasing rice mercury (Hg) uptake in high Hg contaminated paddy soil. In this study, we investigated whether biochar and Se together at low dose could efficiently reduce the rice grain Hg and MeHg accumulation in the slight Hg-contaminated soil. Compared with control (CK), the Hg concentration of grains in the BC3, Se0.5, and BC3 + Se0.5 treatments decreased by 5.4 %, 38.3 %, and 48.5 %, respectively. Co-application of biochar an

Mitigating Mercury Accumulation and Enhancing Methylmercury Degradation in Rice: Insights from Zinc-Mercury Antagonism at Molecular Levels.

Zn as an essential element has the potential to protect against mercury (Hg) toxicity in rice. However, the antagonistic effects between Zn and Hg in rice and their mechanisms remain unknown. This study proposed a promising strategy for Zn application to mitigate Hg accumulation and toxicity in rice and revealed the underlying molecular mechanisms. The findings revealed that Zn supplementation significantly reduced the uptake and transportation of both IHg and MeHg in rice, thereby alleviating Hg phytotoxicity. In particular, Zn profoundly mitigated Hg-induced oxidative damage to rice, which w

Key active mercury methylating microorganisms and their synergistic effects on methylmercury production in paddy soils.

Rice contamination with neurotoxic methylmercury (MeHg) from paddy soils is an escalating global concern. Identifying the microorganisms responsible for mercury (Hg) methylation in these soils is essential for controlling Hg contamination in the food chain and mitigating health impacts. Current research often focuses on total Hg-methylating microorganisms, overlooking the contributions of active ones, which can lead to either overestimating or neglecting the specific roles of microorganisms in Hg methylation within paddy soils. In this study, active Hg-methylating microorganisms in paddy soils

Fecal microbiota transplantation as an effective way in treating methylmercury-poisoned rats.

Methylmercury (MeHg) can cause devastating neurotoxicity in animals and human beings. Gut microbiota dysbiosis has been found in MeHg-poisoned animals. Fecal microbiota transplantation (FMT) has been shown to improve clinical outcomes in a variety of diseases such as epilepsy, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) and autism. The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of FMT on MeHg-poisoned rats. FMT treatment was applied to MeHg-poisoned rats for 14 days. The neurobehavior, weight changes, dopamine (DA), the total Hg and MeHg level were evaluated. Besides, the gut microbiota and meta

Mercury in wetlands over 60 years: Research progress and emerging trends.

Wetlands are considered the hotspots for mercury (Hg) biogeochemistry, garnering global attention. Therefore, it is important to review the research progress in this field and predict future frontiers. To achieve that, we conducted a literature analysis by collecting 15,813 publications about Hg in wetlands from the Web of Science Core Collection. The focus of wetland Hg research has changed dramatically over time: 1) In the initial stage (i.e., 1959-1990), research mainly focused on investigating the sources and contents of Hg in wetland environments and fish. 2) For the next 20 years (i.e.,

Mercury methylation potential and bioavailability in the sediments of two distinct aquatic systems.

This study explored mercury (Hg) methylation potential in two distinct aquatic systems. Fourmile Creek (FMC) was historically polluted with Hg effluents from groundwater as it is a typical gaining stream, where organic matter and microorganisms in streambed are continuously winnowed. The H02 constructed wetland only receives atmospheric Hg and is rich in organic matter and microorganisms. Both systems receive Hg from atmospheric deposition now. Surface sediments were collected from FMC and H02, spiked with inorganic Hg, and cultivated in an anaerobic chamber to stimulate microbial Hg methylati

In Vivo Mercury (De)Methylation Metabolism in Cephalopods under Different pCO2 Scenarios.

This work quantified the accumulation efficiencies of Hg in cuttlefish, depending on both organic (MeHg) and inorganic (Hg(II)) forms, under increased pCO2 (1600 μatm). Cuttlefish were fed with live shrimps injected with two Hg stable isotopic tracers (Me202Hg and 199Hg(II)), which allowed for the simultaneous quantification of internal Hg accumulation, Hg(II) methylation, and MeHg demethylation rates in different organs. Results showed that pCO2 had no impact on Hg bioaccumulation and organotropism, and both Hg and pCO2 did not influence the microbiota diversity of gut and digestive gland. Ho

Biogeochemical and hydrologic synergy control mercury fate in an arid land river-reservoir system.

Reservoirs in arid landscapes provide critical water storage and hydroelectric power but influence the transport and biogeochemical cycling of mercury (Hg). Improved management of reservoirs to mitigate the supply and uptake of bioavailable methylmercury (MeHg) in aquatic food webs will benefit from a mechanistic understanding of inorganic divalent Hg (Hg(II)) and MeHg fate within and downstream of reservoirs. Here, we quantified Hg(II), MeHg, and other pertinent biogeochemical constituents in water (filtered and associated with particles) at high temporal resolution from 2016-2020. This was d

Comparative neurotoxicity of dietary methylmercury and waterborne inorganic mercury in fish: Evidence of optic tectum vulnerability through morphometric and histopathological assessments.

This work investigated the effects of inorganic mercury (iHg) and methylmercury (MeHg) on the fish optic tectum morphology, viz. in relation to: (i) vulnerability of specific optic tectum layers; (ii) preferential targeting of Hg forms to neurons or glial cells; (iii) comparative toxicity of iHg and MeHg in this brain area that is in the maintenance of several fish behaviors. Two experiments exposing juvenile white seabream (Diplodus sargus) to waterborne iHg [HgCl2 (2 μg L-1)] and dietary MeHg (8.7 μg g-1) were performed, comprising both exposure (7 and 14 days; E7 and E14, respectively) and

The divergent effects of nitrate and ammonium application on mercury methylation, demethylation, and reduction in flooded paddy slurries.

The production of methylmercury (MeHg) in flooded paddy fields determines its accumulation in rice grains; this, in turn, results in MeHg exposure risks for not only rice-eating humans but also wildlife. Nitrogen (N) fertilizers have been widely applied in rice cultivation fields to supply essential nutrients. However, the effects of N fertilizer addition on mercury (Hg) transformations are not unclear. This limits our understanding of MeHg formation in rice paddy ecosystems. In this study, we spiked three Hg tracers (200HgII, Me198Hg, and 202Hg0) in paddy slurries fertilized with urea, ammoni

Using Crocodylians for monitoring mercury in the tropics.

Mercury contamination is a widespread phenomenon that impacts ecosystems worldwide. Artisanal Small Scale Gold Mining (ASGM) activities are responsible for more than a third of atmospheric Hg emission. Due to Hg toxicity and its broad and elevated prevalence in the environment resulting from ASGM activities in the tropics, its biomonitoring is essential to better understand the availability of its methylmercury (MeHg) form in the environment. The Minamata Convention was ratified with the objective to "protect human health and the environment from anthropogenic emissions and releases of mercury

World war munitions as a source of mercury in the southwest Baltic Sea.

Mercury (Hg) fulminate was used as a primary fuse in World War (WW) munitions, and may consequently be a Hg source for impacted environments. Mercury is a conspicuous and persistent pollutant, with methylmercury (MeHg) acting as a notorious neurotoxin. Considerable amounts of munitions were intentionally dumped in the North Sea and Baltic Sea following the First and Second WWs. After more than 70 years on the seafloor many munitions have corroded and likely release explosive compounds, including Hg fulminate. The Germany coastal city of Kiel was a manufacturing centre for submarines, and accor
