Between 1986 and 1993, 18 patients with complete or impending fractures of the humerus were treated using Hacketall rods in association with semi-liquid methylmetacrylate after excision of the metastatic lesion. Methylmetacrylate was always injected proximally and distally to the curetted bone through drill holes. Fourteen patients had a pathological fracture and four presented with an impending lesion. PURPOSE: To determine whether the long-term results of implantation of thermoelastic MemoryLens intraocular lenses (IOLs) are comparable to those of conventional poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) IOLs.
SETTING: St. Elisabeth Hospital, Dillingen, Germany.
METHODS: This retrospective study compared visual acuity, astigmatism, lens decentration, biocompatibility, and posterior capsule opacification in 36 eyes with a MemoryLens with those in 36 eyes with a conventional PMMA IOL over 4 years. Either heparin surface modified (HSM) or regular polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) intraocular lenses (IOLs) were implanted after extracapsular cataract extraction in 40 human eyes with exfoliation syndrome in a double-masked, randomized study. The patients were investigated preoperatively, and then 1 day, 1 week, 3, 6 and 12 months postoperatively. A consecutive series of 119 type III B compound fractures in 103 patients was treated at the University of Louisville from May 1983 to May 1989. We studied four angle-supported anterior chamber lenses whose optics and haptics were made of poly(methyl methacrylate). All four lenses had been removed from human eyes because of bullous keratopathy. Using light and electron microscopy, we compared the cellular reaction on the optics, which had been in the anterior chamber, with that on the haptics, which had been in touch with the iris stroma. A typical foreign body granuloma was seen around the haptics, while the optics were free of foreign body reaction.

In 10 cases of posttraumatic osteitis or osteomyelitis gentamicin-PMMA minichains have been used for treatment after radical local debridement. In 8 cases infection could be controlled completely by this regimen, one case needed adjuvant systemic antibiotic treatment and only one case with proved primarily gentamicin-resistant beta-haemolytic-streptococcus could be controlled after removal of PMMA-minichain by systemic antibiotic treatment. 3 to 9 months after therapy all infections were still under control.

A chronic empyema of the ankle joint often develops after an open fracture or surgery. In the case of the destruction of the joint due to an infection, an arthrodesis should be performed. This study investigates the crystallization of the endogenous surfactant nonoxynol 100 in Eudragit NE30D-free films during storage and the influences of nonoxynol 100 on the dissolution of diphenhydramine hydrochloric acid (HCl) pellets coated with Eudragit NE30D before and after aging at ambient conditions.
