Inflammatory bowel disease (IBDs), including Crohn's disease (CD), and ulcerative colitis (UC) are complex diseases with a multifactorial etiology, associated with genetic, dietetic, and other environmental risk factors. Children with IBD are at increased risk for nutritional inadequacies, resulting from decreased oral intake, restrictive dietary patterns, malabsorption, enhanced nutrient loss, surgery, and medications. Follow-up of IBD children should routinely include evaluation of specific nutritional deficits and dietetic and/or supplementation strategies should be implemented in case defi

BACKGROUND: Nutritional deficiencies are frequent after metabolic and bariatric surgery (MBS) and systematic addition of vitamin B12, iron, calcium, and vitamin D to standard multivitamin tablets is recommended. However, there are still uncertainties because supporting data are few and compliance with a large number of tablets is low.
OBJECTIVES: To assess the need for additional supplements using a supplementation based on biological assays after Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (RYGB) and sleeve gastrectomy (SG).
METHODS: Consecutive patients (N = 313: 179 RYGB/134 SG; 86% women, mean age 44.1 ± 1

OBJECTIVES: Folate and vitamin B12 are essential micronutrients involved in one-carbon metabolism. Deficiencies in these nutrients can elevate homocysteine levels, a recognized risk factor for hypertension. This study investigates the prevalence of folate and vitamin B12 deficiencies, hyperhomocysteinemia, and their association with hypertension in a North Indian population.
METHODS: This cross-sectional study analyzed data from 1398 adult participants aged 30-75 years from rural Punjab, India. Biochemical parameters, including folate, vitamin B12, and homocysteine levels, were assessed using…

Aside from its importance in human and animal health, low levels of foliar-applied selenate (SeO4) can be advantageous in the presence of sulfur (S), contributing to improved growth, nutrient uptake, and crop quality. A hydroponic experiment in a growth chamber explored the interactive influence of Se and S on micronutrients and several quality indices, such as soluble sugars, organic acids, and total protein concentrations in spinach (Spinacia oleracea L.). Three levels of S (deprivation, adequate, and excessive) with varying quantities of Se (deficient, moderate, and higher) were examined in…

BACKGROUND: Bariatric surgery is commonly used in patients with body mass indexes over 35 kg/m and obesity-related comorbidities. Despite the significant clinical benefits of bariatric surgery, nutritional deficiencies post-surgery remain a challenge for both patient and healthcare provider [Toninello et al. in Nutrients 13:1565, 2021, Gasmi et al. in Eur J Nutr 61:55-67, 2022]. Nutritional supplementation is a way of reducing the likelihood of postoperative deficiencies; however, prior studies have shown varying degrees of mostly poor to moderate patient adherence [Spetz et al. in Obes Res Cl

Pancreatico-duodenectomy (PD) includes resection of the duodenum and use of the proximal jejunum in a blind loop, thus reducing the absorptive capacity for vitamins and minerals. Several studies have analysed the frequency of micronutrient deficiencies, but there is a paucity of data on those taking routine supplements. A retrospective review of medical notes was undertaken on 548 patients under long-term follow-up following PD in a tertiary hepato-pancreatico-biliary centre. Data were available on 205 patients from 1-14 years following PD, and deficiencies were identified as follows: vitamin

The etiologies of short bowel syndrome (SBS) can be stratified into congenital or acquired etiologies, with the latter being more prevalent. Small intestinal surgical resection is the most common acquired etiology, employed in settings including mesenteric ischemia, intestinal injury, radiation enteritis, and inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) complicated by internal fistulas. We describe a case of a 55-year-old Caucasian male with a history of idiopathic superior mesenteric artery (SMA) ischemia post-SMA placement complicated by recurrent small bowel obstructions. He presented with SMA stent oc

The Biomarkers Reflecting Inflammation and Nutritional Determinants of Anemia (BRINDA) research group was formed over a decade ago to improve the interpretation of micronutrient biomarkers in settings with inflammation. The BRINDA inflammation adjustment method uses regression correction to adjust for the confounding effects of inflammation on select micronutrient biomarkers and has provided important insights to micronutrient research, policy, and programming. However, users may face challenges when applying the BRINDA inflammation adjustment methods to their own data due to varying guidance

Micronutrients, namely, vitamins and minerals, are necessary for the proper functioning of the human body, and their deficiencies can have dramatic short- and long-term health consequences. Among the underlying causes, certainly a reduced dietary intake and/or poor absorption in the gastrointestinal tract play a key role in decreasing their bioavailability. Recent evidence from clinical and in vivo studies suggests an increasingly important contribution from the gut microbiome. Commensal microorganisms can in fact regulate the levels of micronutrients, both by intervening in the biosynthetic p…

BACKGROUND: Polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) is the most common endocrine disorder in reproductive-age women. It is one of the risk factors of metabolic syndrome (MetS). These two syndromes have an inflammatory etiologic foundation along with oxidative stress. The present study aimed to compare the dietary intake of antioxidant micronutrients in PCOS women with and without MetS.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Overall, 42 participants eligible for this nested case control study were selected by the convenience sampling method. The case group included 14 PCOS patients with MetS and the control group …

Adherence to home fortification of foods with multiple micronutrient powders (MNPs) is an essential indicator of effective implementation of MNP programmes. A meta-analysis was conducted to evaluate the high adherence rate (HAR) to MNPs and further investigate the factors that influence HAR. We searched PubMed, Web of Science, Embase, CAB Abstracts, MEDLINE (OVID), Cochrane Library, China National Knowledge Infrastructure, Wanfang and VP, from the date of database inception to 9 November 2020. We included peer-reviewed observational studies that investigated adherence to MNPs. Data on the HAR

Due to the spread of the western style diet, which is characterized by high intake of processed food, micronutrients (vitamins and minerals) deficiency is increasing in the Japanese population of all ages and genders. During pregnancy, the elevated demand for micronutrients put pregnant women at even higher risk of micronutrients deficiency. Some micronutrients are relatively famous such that women with reproductive age are recommended to take folic acid supplementation for the prevention of neural tube defect. However, it is not generally known that folate is also important for fetal growth t…

Micronutrient deficiencies are relatively common, in particular iron and cobalamin deficiency, and may potentially lead to life-threatening clinical consequences when not promptly recognized and treated, especially in elderly patients. The stomach plays an important role in the homeostasis of some important hematopoietic micronutrients like iron and cobalamin, and probably in others equally important such as ascorbic acid, calcium, and magnesium. A key role is played by the corpus oxyntic mucosa composed of parietal cells whose main function is gastric acid secretion and intrinsic factor produ…

Consuming a diverse diet is essential to ensure an adequate intake of micronutrients. The aim of this study was to assess the nutritional status and dietary diversity of women of reproductive age (WRA) living in a marginalized community in rural Pakistan. Forty-seven WRA (35 ± 7 years old) who were not pregnant or lactating at enrollment, were recruited to participate in the study. Twenty-four-hour dietary recall interviews were conducted by the study nutritionist, and the data collected were used to create a minimum dietary diversity for women score (MDD-W) on five occasions during the monsoo…
