Many women of reproductive age take the nonsteroidal antiinflammatory drug celecoxib. No data exist, however, regarding its transfer into human breast milk and safety for breastfed infants. A standard, low-iron, milk-based formula was fed to 781 healthy infants younger than 12 months of age. The infants showed normal increases in weight and length during the study. The formula was well tolerated by most of the infants. The most frequently reported symptoms of intolerance before and during the study were loose stools (in 78%) and spitting up (in 79%). In the present work, somatostatin-like immunoreactivity (SLI) in human milk was characterized. In the early postpartum period, SLI levels were highest on the first day after delivery, and then gradually declined. From the fifth day postpartum, SLI levels in milk seemed unchanged. On the fifth day after delivery, milk SLI was significantly (p less than 0.01) higher than plasma SLI (126.3 +/- 11.7 vs. 17.6 +/- 1.1 pmol/L). The theory that consumption of homogenized milk containing active xanthine oxidase is a causative factor in development of atherosclerosis is reviewed. Biologically available xanthine oxidase in consumed milk products may be absorbed in the small intestine and enter the blood stream. However, there appears to be no unequivocal evidence that the absorbed enzyme has any pathological effects that may contribute to development of atherosclerotic heart disease.

Propylthiouracil (PTU) concentrations were measured in blood and milk from nine lactating women after oral administration of 400 mg of PTU. 1 1/2 h after PTU ingestion mean serum-PTU reached 7.7 microgram/ml and the mean concentration of PTU in milk reached only 0.7 microgram/ml.
