Putative Cut-Points in Sarcopenia Components and Incident Adverse Health Outcomes: An SDOC Analysis.

OBJECTIVES: Analyses performed by the Sarcopenia Definitions and Outcomes Consortium (SDOC) identified cut-points in several metrics of grip strength for consideration in a definition of sarcopenia. We describe the associations between the SDOC-identified metrics of low grip strength (absolute or standardized to body size/composition); low dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry (DXA) lean mass as previously defined in the literature (appendicular lean mass [ALM]/ht2 ); and slowness (walking speed <.8 m/s) with subsequent adverse outcomes (falls, hip fractures, mobility limitation, and mortality). D…

Rib cage mobility in pectus excavatum.

Pectus excavatum is generally regarded as a cosmetic deformity; however, some children with pectus excavatum complain of chest pain and exercise limitation. Physiologic studies sometimes show mild restrictive changes and suggest an increased oxygen cost of breathing. Limitation of rib cage mobility related to the deformity may explain these findings. If rib cage mobility is limited, the ability of the actively inspiring rib cage to lower abdominal pressure would be decreased. If this were so, increased swings in abdominal pressure would be seen during the respiratory cycle, especially at times

Association of Breathing Reserve at Peak Exercise With Body Composition and Physical Function in Older Adults With Obesity.

BACKGROUND: Adiposity-related ventilatory constraints in older adults can potentially contribute to greater risk of exercise intolerance and mobility disability. This study investigated whether ventilatory limitation, measured by breathing reserve (BR) at peak exercise, is associated with body composition and physical function in older adults with obesity. METHODS: This study was a cross-sectional analysis of data from a community-based cohort (N = 177) of older men and women (65-79 years) with obesity (body mass index = 30-45 kg/m2). All participants underwent cardiopulmonary exercise testin

Muscle dysfunction in type 2 diabetes: a major threat to patient's mobility and independence.

Type 2 diabetes, a common metabolic disease in older people, is a major risk factor for functional limitation, impaired mobility, and loss of independence. In older people, the pathogenesis of functional limitation and disability is complex and multifactorial. A number of potential pathways are involved including cardiovascular disease, peripheral neuropathy, overweight, osteoarthritis, visual deficit, and cognitive impairment, conditions that are all more prevalent among patients with diabetes. Sarcopenia, a geriatric condition characterized by a progressive and generalized loss of skeletal m

Multi-group measurement invariance of the multiple sclerosis walking scale-12?

OBJECTIVE: One primary assumption underlying the interpretation of composite multiple sclerosis walking scale-12 (MSWS-12) scores across levels of disability status is multi-group measurement invariance. This assumption was tested in the present study between samples that differed in self-reported disability status. METHOD: Participants (n = 867) completed a battery of questionnaires that included the MSWS-12 and patient-determined disease step (PDDS) scale. The multi-group invariance was tested between samples that had PDDS scores of ≤2 (i.e. no mobility limitation; n = 470) and PDDS scores …

Clinical measurement of mobility and balance impairments in Huntington's disease: validity and responsiveness.

BACKGROUND: Mobility and balance in Huntington's disease (HD) are currently assessed in the clinic with three items from the unified Huntington's disease rating scale (UHDRS): walk, tandem and pull tests. These tests may not be optimal because they are scored on an ordinal scale and do not test anticipatory balance. We tested the validity and responsiveness of three clinical tests of mobility and balance. METHODS: Three clinical tests (FRT, timed up and go (TUG), Berg balance scale (BBS)) were validated with seven quantitative gait measures and two indicators of functional limitation (HD-ADL

Mass Tracking in Cellular Networks for the COVID-19 Pandemic Monitoring.

The year 2020 was marked by the emergence of the COVID-19 pandemic. After months of uncontrolled spread worldwide, a clear conclusion is that controlling the mobility of the general population can slow down the propagation of the pandemic. Tracking the location of the population enables better use of mobility limitation policies and the prediction of potential hotspots, as well as improved alert services to individuals that may have been exposed to the virus. With mobility in their core functionality and a high degree of penetration of mobile devices within the general population, cellular net…

Development and iterative optimization of an independently usable assistance system to assess, maintain and improve the nutritional and mobility status of older adults: an iterative usability study.

BACKGROUND: Promoting a balanced diet and regular physical activity is crucial for maintaining independence in old age. Technical assistance systems can help identify nutritional and mobility deficits and initiate appropriate interventions. We are developing a technical assistance system consisting of a measurement and training station and a tablet-based app (AS-Tra). AS-Tra is specifically designed for independent use by participants aged ≥ 70 years to assess and improve their nutritional and mobility status. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to identify optimization potentials of the AS-Tra system

The effects of obesity and mobility disability in access to breast and cervical cancer screening in france: results from the national health and disability survey.

OBJECTIVES: We aimed to disentangle the effects of obesity and mobility limitation on cervical and breast cancer screening among community dwelling women. METHODS: The data source was the French national Health and Disability Survey - Household Section, 2008. The Body Mass Index (BMI) was used to categorize obesity status. We constructed a continuous score of mobility limitations to assess the severity of disability (Cronbach's alpha = 0.84). Logistic regressions were performed to examine the association between obesity, mobility limitations and the use of Pap test (n = 8 133) and the use of …

Dielectrophoretic mobility determination in DC insulator-based dielectrophoresis.

Insulator-based dielectrophoresis (iDEP) is a powerful tool for separating and characterizing particles, yet it is limited by a lack of quantitative characterizations. Here, this limitation is addressed by employing a method capable of quantifying the DEP mobility of particles. Using streak-based velocimetry the particle properties are deduced from their motion in a microfluidic channel with a constant electric field gradient. From this approach, the DEP mobility of 1 μm polystyrene particles was found to be -2±0.4 10(-8)  cm4 /(V2  s). In the future, such quantitative treatment will allow for

[Stretching--do current explanatory models suffice?].

The opinion that mobility in the usual performance if the "straight leg raise" test for the evaluation of stretching techniques is subject to solety muscular limitations is critically appraised. With integration of recent results from molecular biological research and our own measurements, we can show that not only mechanical but also neurophysiological factors must be considered in the limitation of mobility. In the majority of the examined patients stretching of the ischiadic nerve seems to be responsible for restrictions in movement. The presented results cast doubt on the currently held as
