Association between Increased Perceived Stress and Decreased Self-Rated Health among Adults in Puerto Rico during COVID-19: A Puerto Rico-CEAL Study.

OBJECTIVE: To examine how perceived changes in stress among adults during the COVID-19 pandemic are associated with changes in self-rated health (SRH) in Puerto Rico. METHODS: This cross-sectional analysis used data from the Puerto Rico Community Engagement Alliance (Puerto Rico-CEAL). Adults aged ≥ 18 years (n = 654) completed an online survey from December 2021 through February 2022. One item assessed perceived changes in psychological stress throughout the pandemic. Two separate items assessed SRH (rated from poor to excellent) before and during the pandemic; changes in SRH ratings were ca

An interpretable machine-learning framework for screening psychological distress in patients with chronic rhinosinusitis.

BACKGROUND: Chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS) is associated with a substantial psychological burden, yet tools for identifying patients with psychological distress are lacking in otolaryngologic practice. OBJECTIVE: To develop and validate an interpretable machine-learning model for screening psychological distress in patients with CRS. METHODS: This multicenter study used preoperative data from 408 adults with CRS undergoing endoscopic sinus surgery and an independent external validation cohort of 61 patients. Psychological distress was assessed using the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale. A

Psychological distress in urban Iran: a multilevel analysis of socioeconomic position and context.

BACKGROUND: Mental health disorders significantly contribute to the global burden of disease, both as non-communicable diseases (NCDs) and as risk factors for other health conditions. They represent a major public health concern in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). This study aims to investigate associations between psychological distress, socioeconomic factors, and corruption-related factors among Iranian adults in urban settings using multilevel analysis. METHODS: This cross-sectional analysis uses data from a survey conducted in 2025 among urban adults across all 31 provinces of Ir

Determinants of internet poker adoption.

In nearly all jurisdictions, adoption of a new form of gambling has been a controversial and contentious subject. Online gambling has been no different, though there are many aspects that affect online gambling that do not appear in the brick and mortar environment. This study seeks to identify whether demographic, economic, political, technological, and/or sociological determinants contribute to online poker gambling adoption. A theoretical discussion of these categories' importance to online poker is provided and exploratory empirical analysis is used to examine their potential validity. The

Machine Learning-Based Identification of Preoperative Psychological Distress and Its Association With Adverse Surgery-Related Outcomes: Evidence From the China Surgery and Anesthesia Cohort (CSAC).

BACKGROUND: Many patients experience psychological distress in the preoperative phase, whilst screening based on cut-off points of assessment scales showed limited value in predicting clinical postoperative adverse outcomes. METHODS: To identify preoperative psychological distress and investigate their associations with adverse surgery-related outcomes, we included 16,662 patients from the China Surgery and Anesthesia Cohort (CSAC). We applied dimensionality reduction and unsupervised machine learning algorithms to classify participants into distinct psychological patterns. We then assessed t

Evaluating the validity of the simplified conjoint-recognition model.

The distinction between verbatim and gist traces has been central to various fields of cognitive research, especially false memory, judgment and decision-making, cognitive development, and aging. The conjoint-recognition paradigm was developed to quantify the contributions of verbatim and gist traces to various tasks in those fields. A simplified version of the original paradigm has been devised and has been implemented in several recent studies. However, the validity of this methodology and the memory processes it measures remain uncertain. To address the problem, we first conducted factor an

Dual Autonomy and Latent Deprivation: Extending Self-Determination Theory and the Job Demands-Resources Model.

Self-Determination Theory treats autonomy as a unitary construct, the Job Demands-Resources model does not engage with autonomy directly, and the curiosity literature describes exploratory motivation without specifying its structural relationship to either demands or autonomy. This paper proposes that these three traditions can be productively linked through a dual-autonomy framework. Drawing on the JDR model's analysis of demand structures, curiosity psychology's taxonomies of exploratory motivation, and SDT's account of basic psychological needs, the paper argues that autonomy operates in tw

Retrospective Imagination in the Psychotherapeutic Process: A Theoretical-clinical Synthesis.

Imagination plays a central role in psychotherapeutic practice, yet it is often threatened as a technique or as a secondary cognitive activity. In this paper, I develop a process-oriented understanding of guided imaginative retrospection, conceptualising imagination as a culturally-mediated and developmental process. Drawing on clinical material and cultural-psychological theory, it is shown how present affective experiences are aligned with earlier biographical situations through therapist-guided imaginative engagement. The analysis reconstructs four interrelated process dimensions: (1) initi

The Insight Trap: Recursive Affective-Symbolic Loops and the Architecture of Chronicity.

RATIONALE: Chronic psychological suffering may persist despite adequate diagnosis, evidence-based treatment and preserved cognitive insight. In clinical practice, this persistence is often interpreted as treatment resistance, symptom severity or insufficient adherence. However, such explanations may fail to capture the structural organization through which suffering becomes stabilized over time. AIMS AND OBJECTIVES: This theoretical article proposes an alternative conceptualization of psychopathological chronicity as a structural mode of organization sustained by recursive affective-symbolic

Moments of complexity and enigmatic action: a Jungian view of the therapeutic field.

In presenting clinical case material for a panel on archetypes and/or primal phantasies an initial discussion of archetypes as emergent phenomena organizing 'moments of complexity' is given(1) . The relationship of such moments to 'moments of meeting' as developed by the Boston Change Process Study Group is commented on and explored within the context of the case. A condensed report of a multi-year analytic treatment of a bipolar patient having a severe trauma history is offered for discussion. Several unusual, enigmatic events are detailed to illustrate the occurrence of moments of complexity

Analyzing forms of superego functioning as mentalizations.

The concept of mentalization seeks to understand the transformation processes of physical quantity into psychical quality through the emergence, development and organization of mental representations. Often discussed in relation to the functioning of both the id and the ego, it is here proposed that the degree of mentalization also determines the level of functioning and maturity of the hostile, self-punitive superego. Luquet's description of four layers of thought (primary mental representations, metaprimary thinking, metaconscious intuitive thinking, conscious verbal thought) serves as a gui

The evaluation of the 'stages of change' model for use in counselling client's undergoing predictive testing for Huntington's disease.

Nurses are increasingly working in new and novel situations which may be outside the realms of traditional nursing practice. Therefore when evaluating theories and models that may be utilized in these situations it may be necessary to look beyond established nursing theories and concepts. This paper therefore attempts to evaluate Prochaska & DiClemente's (1983) stages of change model for its goodness of fit when counselling people as part of the predictive testing programme for Huntington's disease. The model demonstrates that in order to provide effective communication it is important to reco

The position of moving objects.

Moving objects occupy a range of positions during the period of integration of the visual system. Nevertheless, a unique position is usually observed. We investigate how the trajectory of a stimulus influences the position at which the object is seen. It has been shown before that moving objects are perceived ahead of static objects shown at the same place and time. We show here that this perceived position difference builds up over the first 500 ms of a visible trajectory. Discontinuities in the visual input reduce this buildup when the presentation frequency of a stimulus with a duration of

Every time dualism is mentioned in clinical debate, a philosopher is thrown out of heaven.

Scamvougeras and Castle argue that appeals to dualism are frequently deployed to dismiss psychological explanations in favour of framing functional neurological disorder (FND) as a "brain disorder." Yet participants on all sides of this debate often conflate "dualism" with Cartesian substance dualism. Contemporary philosophy of mind, by contrast, accommodates multi-level, non-reductive accounts that are fully compatible with the brain as the organ of the mind. Positions such as property dualism and non-reductive physicalism demonstrate that recognising psychological mechanisms does not entail

Psychological resilience mediates the association between sleep quality and anxiety symptoms: A repeated measures study in college students.

OBJECTIVE: To explore the association between sleep quality and anxiety symptoms, and the mediation effect of psychological resilience on this association by a repeated measures study. METHODS: In this study, 127 college students were randomly recruited and their sleep quality and psychological status were repeatedly collected using the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) scale, Connor-Davidson resilience scale (CD-RISC), and 7-items generalized anxiety disorder scale (GAD-7). Linear mixed-effects models were used to explore the association between sleep quality and anxiety symptoms, and a

Trajectory of maternal perinatal negative psychological states and its association with early offspring neurodevelopment: A longitudinal cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Existing studies often examined single psychological states in isolation (depression, anxiety, stress) or used static assessments, limiting the understanding of dynamic trajectories and synergistic effects of co-occurring psychological states. The study was designed to tackle both major limitations. METHODS: 609 pregnant women in their third trimester were enrolled. Maternal depression, anxiety, and perceived stress were repeatedly assessed at the third trimester and 1, 3, and 6 months postpartum using the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale, Generalized Anxiety Disorder 7-item s

Alcohol Use, Discrimination, and Psychological Partner Abuse Among LGBQ+ College Students: Results From a Daily Diary Study.

Alcohol use correlates with psychological partner abuse (PA) perpetration among lesbian, gay, bisexual, queer, and other nonheterosexual (LGBQ+) young adults. However, less is known about the proximal association between alcohol use and psychological PA within this population, which would provide valuable information for intervention development. Informed by minority stress and alcohol-related PA theories, we evaluated whether (a) psychological PA perpetration odds increased as the number of drinks consumed prior to psychological PA on a given day increased, (b) psychological PA perpetration o

Hostility, flooding, and relationship satisfaction: Predicting trajectories of psychological aggression across the transition to parenthood.

Psychological aggression has been shown to have harmful effects on both partners, sometimes above and beyond the effects of physical aggression. However, very little is known about psychological aggression during the transition to parenthood. The transition to parenthood is a time where relationship satisfaction often declines and stress increases, which may put the couples at higher risk for psychological aggression. The purpose of this study was to examine if prenatal risk factors related to interpersonal style (specifically, emotional flooding and hostility) predict changes in psychological
