Acceleration or velocity? Exploring minimally disruptive visual motion cues for reducing motion sickness in passenger VR.

Motion sickness is a common issue for passengers, where a sensory conflict between visual and physical motion elicits symptoms. This can be particularly problematic if VR headsets are used by passengers in moving vehicles. Commonly used matched motion cues, which visually represent vehicle velocity via in-car displays or VR headsets, can alleviate this conflict but may cause distraction from the task the user is trying to perform, such as working or watching a movie. Acceleration-based visual mitigations could be a good alternative as they present fewer motion cues. However, studies on their p…

Moving in a Moving World: A Review on Vestibular Motion Sickness.

Motion sickness is a common disturbance occurring in healthy people as a physiological response to exposure to motion stimuli that are unexpected on the basis of previous experience. The motion can be either real, and therefore perceived by the vestibular system, or illusory, as in the case of visual illusion. A multitude of studies has been performed in the last decades, substantiating different nauseogenic stimuli, studying their specific characteristics, proposing unifying theories, and testing possible countermeasures. Several reviews focused on one of these aspects; however, the link betw…

The Combination of Scopolamine and Psychostimulants for the Prevention of Severe Motion Sickness.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Severe motion sickness is a huge obstacle for people conducting precise aviation, marine or emergency service tasks. The combination of scopolamine and d-amphetamine is most effective in preventing severe motion sickness. However, this combination is not included in any present pharmacopoeia due to the abuse liability of d-amphetamine. We wanted to find a combination to replace it for the treatment of severe motion sickness. METHODS AND RESULTS: We compared the efficacy of scopolamine, diphenhydramine, and granisetron (representing three classes of drugs) with different d…

Motion sickness may be caused by a neurohumoral action of acetylcholine.

The mechanism by which motion stimulation results in the autonomic responses, known as motion sickness, has remained somewhat of an enigma. Neural connections between the vestibular nuclei and the autonomic and emetic centers in the brainstem have been described, but these appear to be relatively sparse. Thus, new or additional mechanisms seem warranted to account for this curious relationship. A new hypothesis is herein presented which posits that acetylcholine (ACh) acts as a neurohumeral agent to bring about the symptoms associated with motion sickness. Motion stimulation will activate prim…

Motion sickness: effect of the magnitude of roll and pitch oscillation.

BACKGROUND: Rotational oscillation in roll and pitch can cause motion sickness, but it is not known how sickness depends on the magnitude of rotational oscillation or whether there is a difference between the two axes of motion. HYPOTHESIS: It was hypothesized that motion sickness would increase similarly with increasing magnitudes of roll and pitch oscillation. METHOD: There were 120 subjects (6 groups of 20 subjects) who were exposed to 30 min of 0.2-Hz sinusoidal roll or pitch oscillation at 1 of 3 magnitudes: 1) +/- 1.830; 2) +/- 3.66 degrees; or 3) +/- 7.32 degrees. Subjects sitting in …

Motion sickness preceded by unstable displacements of the center of pressure.

We exposed standing participants to optic flow in a moving room. Motion sickness was induced by motion that simulated the amplitude and frequency of standing sway. We identified instabilities in displacements of the center of pressure among participants who became sick; these instabilities occurred before the onset of subjective motion sickness symptoms. Postural differences between Sick and Well participants were observed before exposure to the nauseogenic stimulus. During exposure to the nauseogenic stimulus, sway increased for participants who became sick but also for those who did not. How…

Effect of magnitude and direction of horizontal oscillation on motion sickness.

BACKGROUND: Various types of motion and visual scene can cause motion sickness, but sickness in land transport seems to be often associated with variations in horizontal acceleration. If horizontal oscillation causes sickness, it seems reasonable to assume that greater amounts of motion (i.e., an increased magnitude of motion or an increased duration of motion) will increase the extent of the sickness. HYPOTHESIS: It was hypothesized that the magnitude, direction, and duration of horizontal oscillation would affect the sickness experienced by subjects. METHOD: The 144 subjects were exposed t…

Effects of gender of subjects and experimenter on susceptibility to motion sickness.

BACKGROUND: It has been reported that females are more susceptible to motion sickness than males, but these reports have failed to take into account the possible effects of the gender of the experimenter and the subjective nature of reports of symptoms of motion sickness. To deal with the first possible confound, we used male and female experimenters. To deal with the second issue, we recorded gastric myoelectric activity so as to be able to quantify gastric tachyarrhythmia, an objective measure that has been shown previously to correlate highly with severity of symptoms. METHOD: There were 3…

The effect of autogenic training and biofeedback on motion sickness tolerance.

BACKGROUND: Motion sickness is characterized by symptoms of vomiting, drowsiness, fatigue and idiosyncratic changes in autonomic nervous system (ANS) responses such as heart rate (HR) and skin temperature (ST). Previous studies found that symptoms of motion sickness are controllable through self-regulation of ANS responses and the best method to teach such control is autogenic-feedback (biofeedback) training. Recent experiments indicated that biofeedback training is ineffective in reducing symptoms of motion sickness or in increasing tolerance to motion. HYPOTHESIS: If biofeedback facilitates…

Motion sickness and perception: a reappraisal of the sensory conflict approach.

This review examines the role of activity and perceptual learning in motion sickness by means of a survey of the two kinds of recent research relevant to this topic. The first is a body of literature concerned not with motion sickness as such, but with perception of orientation and self-motion under the conditions of 'sensory conflict' which are thought to provoke motion sickness. The second consists of investigations into the prediction and prevention of motion sickness itself. A major weakness is identified in the methodologies employed in both types of research: namely, a neglect of the way…

Motion sickness: a synthesis and evaluation of the sensory conflict theory.

"Motion sickness" is the general term describing a group of common nausea syndromes originally attributed to motion-induced cerebral ischemia, stimulation of abdominal organ afferents, or overstimulation of the vestibular organs of the inner ear. Seasickness, car sickness, and airsickness are commonly experienced examples. However, the identification of other variants such as spectacle sickness and flight simulator sickness in which the physical motion of the head and body is normal or even absent has led to a succession of "sensory conflict" theories that offer a more comprehensive etiologic …

A survey of the occurrence of motion sickness amongst passengers at sea.

A questionnaire survey of motion sickness occurrence on board passenger ferries has been conducted. Data were collected from 20,029 passengers on 114 voyages on 9 vessels: 6 ships, 2 hovercraft, and 1 jetfoil. Information was obtained about feelings of illness, the occurrence of vomiting, the taking of anti-seasickness tablets, the consumption of alcoholic drinks, regularity of travel by sea, age, and sex. Overall, 7% of passengers reported vomiting at some time during the journey, 21% said they felt "slightly unwell," 4% felt "quite ill," and a further 4% felt "absolutely dreadful." Both vomi…
