Long-term Motor and Cognitive Function in the Children of Women With Inflammatory Bowel Disease.

INTRODUCTION: Research on long-term outcomes of children exposed to inflammatory bowel disease [IBD] in utero is lacking. Maternal inflammation, IBD medications, or other factors may increase the risk of developmental disabilities in the offspring. METHODS: We used the Danish National Birth Cohort, an ongoing prospective study that includes 100 419 pregnancies of 92 274 women, in conjunction with the Danish National Registries, to evaluate cognitive and motor development of the children of women with and without IBD. We analysed basic measures of childhood development at 6-month and 18-month

Associations between maternal urinary isoflavone concentrations and anogenital distance of offspring throughout infancy: a prospective cohort study.

STUDY QUESTION: Are maternal urinary isoflavone (ISO) concentrations during pregnancy associated with anogenital distance (AGD) in infants at birth, and at 6 and 12 months of age? SUMMARY ANSWER: Higher maternal urinary ISO concentrations during pregnancy were associated with longer AGD in infants of both sexes, and equol (EQU) and daidzein (DAD) were identified as the important ISO mixture components in the observed associations. WHAT IS KNOWN ALREADY: Evidence of the association of prenatal exposure to ISO with offspring's AGD is mainly derived from animal studies, which used different stu

Association between serum oestradiol level on the hCG administration day and neonatal birthweight after IVF-ET among 3659 singleton live births.

Oestradiol, an important hormone in follicular development and endometrial receptivity, is closely related to clinical outcomes of fresh in vitro fertilization-embryo transfer (IVF-ET) cycles. A supraphysiologic E2 level is inevitable during controlled ovarian hyper-stimulation (COH), and its effect on the outcome of IVF-ET is controversial. The aim of this retrospective study is to evaluate the association between elevated serum oestradiol (E2) levels on the day of human chorionic gonadotrophin (hCG) administration and neonatal birthweight after IVF-ET cycles. The data of 3659 infertile patie

Risk of major congenital heart disease in pregestational maternal diabetes is modified by hemoglobin A1c.

OBJECTIVES: The association between pregestational diabetes mellitus (PDM) and risk of congenital heart disease (CHD) is well recognized; however, the importance of glycemic control and other coexisting risk factors during pregnancy is less clear. We sought to determine the relative risk (RR) of major CHD (mCHD) among offspring from pregnancies complicated by PDM and the effect of first-trimester glycemic control on mCHD risk. METHODS: We determined the incidence of mCHD (requiring surgery within 1 year of birth or resulting in pregnancy termination or fetal demise) among registered births in

From womb to maturity: Prenatal and postnatal cranial growth in goat (Capra hircus).

The skull is a key marker of morphological diversity in terms of ontogeny and phylogeny; however, prenatal growth patterns in mammals remain poorly understood. Changes in skull growth from embryonic to postnatal stages are influenced by multiple factors, including the maturity of offspring at birth within the altricial-precocial continuum, dietary transitions during the postnatal period, and the development of secondary cranial structures such as horns. In this study, we analyzed pre- and postnatal skull growth in goat (Capra hircus) using three-dimensional geometric morphometrics and linear a

[Steinert's disease and pregnancy. A case report and recent literature].

Steinert's disease or myotonic dystrophy is a heredo-degenerative neuroendocrinal dystrophy. It is an autosomal dominant disorder. The arising of a congenital myotonic dystrophy of one of the new-born children of the maternity hospital enabled to diagnose the Steinert's disease of his mother. A review of the international literature enabled us to recall its interactions with pregnancy. There is an aggravation of myotonia and multiple obstetric complications such as miscarriage, premature onset of labor, polyhydramnios, stillbirth, difficulties during the evacuation, atonic postpartum hemorrhag

Maternal free fatty acid concentration during pregnancy is associated with newborn hypothalamic microstructure in humans.

OBJECTIVE: This study tested the hypothesis, in a prospective cohort study design, that maternal saturated free fatty acid (sFFA) concentration during pregnancy is prospectively associated with offspring (newborn) hypothalamic (HTH) microstructure and to explore the functional relevance of this association with respect to early-childhood body fat percentage (BF%). METHODS: In N = 94 healthy newborns (born mean 39.3 [SD 1.5] weeks gestation), diffusion-weighted magnetic resonance imaging was performed shortly after birth (25.3 [12.5] postnatal days), and a subgroup (n = 37) underwent a dual-en

Gestational Weight Gain: Update on Outcomes and Interventions.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Gestational weight gain is a modifiable risk factor for adverse perinatal outcomes. After the Institute of Medicine (IOM) released updated recommendations for gestational weight gain in 2009, a multitude of studies were released examining the recommendations, particularly for women with obesity. As the obesity epidemic continues, many physicians are interested in minimizing gestational weight gain for all women. Our aim was to review the evidence for the association of gestational weight gain and perinatal outcomes, particularly for weight gain outside the IOM guidelines. R

Quadruplet pregnancy following spontaneous conception: a rare case report.

Quadruplets are a set of four offspring born at one birth which can be fraternal (multizygotic), identical (monozygotic) or a combination of both. Multizygotic quadruplets occur from fertilisation of four different sets of ovum and sperm. Monozygotic multiples are the result of a fertilized egg that splits into two or more embryos. Multizygotic quadruplets can be all male, all female, or a combination of both while monozygotic quadruplets will always be of the same gender. Here we present a case of 32-year-old G4P3L0 with previous history of three term intrauterine foetal death (IUFD) at 27 wk

Methods and models for metabolic assessment in mice.

The development of new therapies for the treatment of type 2 diabetes requires robust, reproducible and well validated in vivo experimental systems. Mice provide the most ideal animal model for studies of potential therapies. Unlike larger animals, mice have a short gestational period, are genetically similar, often give birth to many offspring at once and can be housed as multiple groups in a single cage. The mouse model has been extensively metabolically characterized using different tests. This report summarizes how these tests can be executed and how arising data are analyzed to confidentl

Stability and inter-family associations of hair endocannabinoid and N-acylethanolamines across the perinatal period in mothers, fathers, and children.

Analysis of endocannabinoids (ECs) and N-acylethanolamines (NAEs) in hair is assumed to retrospectively assess long-term EC/NAE concentrations. To inform their use, this study investigated stability of EC/NAE hair concentrations in mothers, fathers, and their children across the perinatal period as well as associations between family members. In a prospective cohort study, EC (AEA, 1-AG/2-AG) and NAE (SEA, PEA, OEA) levels were quantified in hair samples taken four times in mothers (n = 336) and their partners (n = 225) from pregnancy to two years postpartum and in offspring (n = 319) from sho

Genome-Wide Placental Gene Methylations in Gestational Diabetes Mellitus, Fetal Growth and Metabolic Health Biomarkers in Cord Blood.

Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) "program" an elevated risk of metabolic syndrome in the offspring. Epigenetic alterations are a suspected mechanism. GDM has been associated with placental DNA methylation changes in some epigenome-wide association studies. It remains unclear which genes or pathways are affected, and whether any placental differential gene methylations are correlated to fetal growth or circulating metabolic health biomarkers. In an epigenome-wide association study using the Infinium MethylationEPIC Beadchip, we sought to identify genome-wide placental differentially methylat

High Maternal Total Cholesterol Is Associated With No-Catch-up Growth in Full-Term SGA Infants: The Japan Environment and Children's Study.

OBJECTIVES: Infants born small for gestational age (SGA) with no catch-up growth (No-CU) are at high risk of intellectual and developmental disabilities. However, factors leading to No-CU among SGA infants are unclear. This study aimed to examine the association between maternal total cholesterol (TC) in mid-pregnancy and No-CU at 3 years among full-term SGA infants. STUDY DESIGN: The Japan Environment and Children's Study (JECS) is a nationwide prospective birth cohort study. We extracted a total of 2,222 mothers and full-term SGA infants (length and/or weight <-2 standard deviation [SD]) wi

Assessing the performance of Moghani crossbred lambs derived from different mating systems with Texel and Booroola sheep.

In our ongoing project, which focuses on the introgression of Booroola/FecB gene and the myostatin (MSTN) gene into purebred Moghani sheep, we assessed the performance of second-generation Moghani crossbreds such as second crossbreds (F2) and initial backcross generation (BC1). These crossbreds were generated through different mating systems, including in-breeding, outcrossing, first paternal backcrossing (PBC1), and first maternal backcrossing (MBC1). Notably, F2 strains exhibited lean tail, woolly fleece and a higher percentage of white coat color compared to BC1. The impact of mating system

Amelia: a multi-center descriptive epidemiologic study in a large dataset from the International Clearinghouse for Birth Defects Surveillance and Research, and overview of the literature.

This study describes the epidemiology of congenital amelia (absence of limb/s), using the largest series of cases known to date. Data were gathered by 20 surveillance programs on congenital anomalies, all International Clearinghouse for Birth Defects Surveillance and Research members, from all continents but Africa, from 1968 to 2006, depending on the program. Reported clinical information on cases was thoroughly reviewed to identify those strictly meeting the definition of amelia. Those with amniotic bands or limb-body wall complex were excluded. The primary epidemiological analyses focused o

Vanishing Twin Syndrome After In Vitro Fertilization and Embryo Transfer: Mechanisms, Perinatal Consequences, Diagnostic Pitfalls, and Prevention.

Vanishing twin syndrome (VTS) denotes the spontaneous loss of one conceptus from an initially recognized multiple pregnancy, most often during the first trimester. Its clinical relevance has increased with in vitro fertilization and embryo transfer (IVF-ET), as multiple embryo transfer creates the substrate for dizygotic VTS, while blastocyst transfer may be followed by monozygotic splitting and serial early ultrasonography increases detection. However, the literature remains heterogeneous, with empty gestational sacs, losses after fetal cardiac activity, and later single fetal demise often gr

Skeletal development of mice lacking bone sialoprotein (BSP)--impairment of long bone growth and progressive establishment of high trabecular bone mass.

Adult Ibsp-knockout mice (BSP-/-) display shorter stature, lower bone turnover and higher trabecular bone mass than wild type, the latter resulting from impaired bone resorption. Unexpectedly, BSP knockout also affects reproductive behavior, as female mice do not construct a proper "nest" for their offsprings. Multiple crossing experiments nonetheless indicated that the shorter stature and lower weight of BSP-/- mice, since birth and throughout life, as well as their shorter femur and tibia bones are independent of the genotype of the mothers, and thus reflect genetic inheritance. In BSP-/- ne
