Urethral closure mechanisms during abrupt elevation of intravesical pressure (P(ves)) were investigated. During sneezing, the middle urethral closing response was observed and it still remained after opening the abdomen. The middle urethral response was almost completely abolished after bilateral transection of somatic nerves innervating the external urethral sphincter and the pelvic floor muscles, while bilateral transection of both pelvic nerves and hypogastric nerves had no effects. Somatic nerve transection resulted in fluid leakage from the urethral orifice during sneezing. Passive increm

Tropomyosin is an essential component of the sarcomeric thin filament in striated muscle that participates in the regulation of muscle contraction through Ca(2+)-mediated activation. The two predominant tropomyosin isoforms expressed in striated muscle are alpha- and beta-tropomyosin, which exhibit an 86% amino acid identity between themselves. Previous studies by our laboratory utilized a transgenic mouse system to overexpress beta-tropomyosin in the heart to address the functional differences between these two tropomyosin isoforms. Interestingly, when a high percentage of beta-tropomyosin re

Hollow cylindrical muscular organs are widespread in animals and are effective in providing support for locomotion and movement, yet are subject to significant non-uniformities in circumferential muscle strain. During contraction of the mantle of squid, the circular muscle fibers along the inner (lumen) surface of the mantle experience circumferential strains 1.3 to 1.6 times greater than fibers along the outer surface of the mantle. This transmural gradient of strain may require the circular muscle fibers near the inner and outer surfaces of the mantle to operate in different regions of the l

In the majority of patients, spinal cord injury (SCI) results in abnormal pain syndromes in which non-noxious stimuli become noxious (allodynia). To reduce allodynia, it would be desirable to implant a permanent biological pump such as adrenal medullary chromaffin cells (AM), which secrete catecholamines and opioid peptides, both antinociceptive substances, near the spinal cord. We tested this approach using a recently developed a mammalian SCI model of chronic central pain, which results in development of mechanical and thermal allodynia. Thirty day-old male Sprague-Dawley rats were spinally

INTRODUCTION: Cysticercosis is an infection by the larval stage (cystcercus cellulosae) of the cestode, Taenia Solium (pork tape worm). It occurs especially in those individuals who live in the endemic areas. After gaining entry into the body, the larva become encysted and may lie in subcutaneous tissue, striated muscle, vitreous humor, or other tissues.
CASE REPORT: We report an unusual case of cysticercosis of the Extensor carpi ulnaris (ECU) muscle, which presented as localized swelling at the lateral aspect of elbow. The diagnosis was confirmed on the musculoskeletal ultrasonographic exam

Thirty beign cystic teratomas of the ovary were studied by immunofluroesecence, using specific human antisera for (a) squamous epithelial intercellular areas (pemphigus sera), (b) squamous epithelial basement membranes (bullous pemphigoid sera), (c) smooth muscle (chronic active hepatitis sera, and (d) striated muscle (thymona sera). Squamous epithelial intercellular staining was seen in all specimens and was present in the basal cell layers as well as in the prickle cell layers, suggesting a slow regeneration rate for the squamous epithelial lining of these tumors. Well-formed basement membra

An octogenarian man developed a recurrent cheek lesion 8 years after surgical resection. Although the histopathological features resembled those of endocrine mucin-producing sweat gland carcinoma (EMPSGC), small tumor nests lacking mucinous carcinoma components infiltrated the surrounding adipose tissue and striated muscle. This infiltrative morphology is inconsistent with the pushing invasion described by the WHO classification. To our knowledge, this is the first report of EMPSGC demonstrating this distinct growth pattern, the clinical significance of which remains unclear.

In this paper, the authors report two cases of adult type rhabdomyomas of the soft palate. This tumor is composed of striated muscle cells containing striations and intracytoplasmic rod-shaped inclusions. In specimens already fixed in aqueous fixators (formalin...), some tumor cells presented a fixation artefact and displayed the morphology of so-called "spiderweb cells". Adult type rhabdomyoma is a real tumor. Total surgical removal is sufficient to cure the patient of this tumor in most cases.

Bladder and urethral innervation was studied in 18 patients with protruded lumbar disk or persistent back pain after laminectomy. A high incidence of neurogenic dysfunction of the detrusor muscle was found, whereas impaired function of the striated external urethral sphincter was rare. The lesions were encountered among the patients with protruded lumbar disk as well as among the patients with sequelae after laminectomy, suggesting that neurogenic bladder dysfunction in cauda equina injury due to protruded disk is often irreversible.

UNLABELLED: Rhabdomyolysis, meaning "disintegration of striated muscle", is a potentially life-threatening syndrome resulting from release of muscular cell constituents into the circulation. The aim of this study is to determine frequence and causes of rhabomyolysis in internal medicine practice, as well as diagnostic and therapeutic discussions, based on a retrospective study in patients addressed to a medical clinic of an universitary emergency hospital.
RESULTS: The most common causes of rhabdomyolysis in general practice are represented by muscular trauma, muscle enzyme deficiencies, elec

Infectious myopathies are rare acquired affections which have, generally, a good prognostic. Many types of viral infections can cause transient inflammatory myopathies. HIV myopathy may be present early in the HIV infection, but more often it is a complication of fully developed AIDS. Influenza virus myositis tend to be more severe in adults than in children. Group B coxsackie virus has been isolated from striated muscle of patients with epidemic myalgia. Parasitic infections of muscle include trichinosis, toxoplasmosis, and cysticercosis. Trichinosis is the most frequent parasitic myositis. T

Striated muscle is a highly specialized collection of tissues with contractile properties that vary according to functional needs. Although muscle fiber types are established postnatally, lifelong plasticity facilitates stimulus-dependent adaptation. Functional adaptation requires molecular adaptation, which is partially provided by miRNA-mediated post-transcriptional regulation. miR-206 is a muscle-specific miRNA enriched in slow muscles. We investigated whether miR-206 drives the slow muscle phenotype or is merely an outcome. We found that miR-206 expression increases in both physiological (

Stress incontinence of urine without cervicocystoptosis secondary to difficult labor and delivery is essentially due to rupture of the smooth muscle sphincter of the bladder. Other changes affecting the anterior vaginal wall (thinning of fibrous tissue, partial splitting of the striated urethral sphincter, etc.) are found before difficult labor without stress incontinence of urine. Only operative microscopy enables anatomical analysis. Lateral cystography confirms the clinical diagnosis. There is no correlation between the extent of lesions and functional study results. Surgery is limited to t

The involvement of skeletal striated muscle in leprosy is considered secondary due to peripheral neuropathy, but some studies point it to a primary muscle lesion. In order to investigate the muscle involvement in leprosy, we studied 40 patients (lepromatous 23, tuberculoid 13, borderline 2 and indeterminate 2). The motor nerve conduction of the peroneal nerves had a reduction of the velocity, decreased compound muscle action potential and sometimes absence of potentials. The electromyographic study of the anterior tibial muscle showed signs of recent and chronic denervation in 77.5% of the cas

Neurophysiologic intraoperative monitoring (NIOM) of the glossopharyngeal and vagus nerves (CN IX and X) is often used during surgeries involving the lower brain stem. Although both of these nerves contain sensory, autonomic, and motor fibers, it is the motor fibers that are most amenable to NIOM. CN IX supplies the stylopharyngeus muscle, and CN X supplies striated muscles in the soft palate, pharynx, and larynx. Monitoring of these CN can be performed by monitoring free running and stimulated electromyography (EMG) from the stylopharyngeus muscle (CN IX) and the vocal cords (CN X). Various s

Striated muscle needs to maintain cellular homeostasis in adaptation to increases in physiological and metabolic demands. Failure to do so can result in rhabdomyolysis. The identification of novel genetic conditions associated with rhabdomyolysis helps to shed light on hitherto unrecognized homeostatic mechanisms. Here we report seven individuals in six families from different ethnic backgrounds with biallelic variants in MLIP, which encodes the muscular lamin A/C-interacting protein, MLIP. Patients presented with a consistent phenotype characterized by mild muscle weakness, exercise-induced m

Whereas systemic vasculitis is the most common form of vasculitis, vasculitis restricted to a single organ system is rare. Primary vasculitis restricted to striated skeletal muscle has been described in few case reports for polyarteritis nodosa and leucocytoclastic vasculitis, but not for small vessel vasculitis, type microscopic polyangiitis. The authors describe three patients with primary small vessel vasculitis of the skeletal muscle without evidence of other major organ involvement. All three patients presented with myalgias and highly elevated acute phase reactants while muscle weakness

This study shows different aspects of the innervation of some striated muscles. It appears that neuromuscular spindles are not present in all skeletal muscles. Some muscles of the oto-rhino-laryngological region lack spindles whilst their direct antagonists possess them. Amongst the muscles of the external and middle ear, the soft palate and the larynx having opposite actions, there is in each case one muscle which does not have any spindles. These muscles then have only motor innervation. The muscles which have neuro-muscular spindles are innervated by nerves composed of extra- and intrafusal

Desmin is a muscle-specific protein and a key subunit of the intermediate filament in cardiac, skeletal and smooth muscles. Desmin filaments are mainly located at the periphery of Z-disk of striated muscles and at the dense bodies of smooth muscle cells, and they have been postulated to play a critical role in the maintenance of structural and mechanical integrity of the contractile apparatus in muscle tissues. This review summarizes the findings in the regulation of the desmin gene and function of the desmin protein. The expression of desmin gene is regulated by a combination of different tra
