Effect of Acute Judo Training on Countermovement Jump Performance and Perceived Fatigue among Collegiate Athletes.

This study focused on the effect of acute Judo training on countermovement jump (CMJ) performance and perceived fatigue among a group of highly trained collegiate judo athletes. Twenty male judo athletes participated in this study (age: 20.65 ± 1.22 years, weight: 84.17 ± 28.45 kg). Participants were assessed for CMJperformance changes before, immediately after (0 h), 12 h after, and 24 h after judo training (JT) using unloaded CMJ(CMJunloaded) and loaded CMJ(CMJloaded). All the jumps were performed on a force plate, and the force-time curves were collected for further analysis. Respondents' p

Single-fiber morphometry and spatial transcriptomics reveal selective oxidative muscle fiber atrophy in non-metastatic breast cancer.

Cancer-related fatigue is the most common and persistent symptom in breast cancer, with fatigue reported up to 10 years post-diagnosis. Unlike many cancers, fatigue in breast cancer often arises during early-stage disease in the absence of cachexia. While many factors contribute to fatigue, the direct contribution of cancer-associated skeletal muscle pathology remains poorly understood. Here we analyzed pectoralis major muscle biopsies from individuals with non-metastatic breast cancer and non-cancer controls using single-fiber morphometry and spatial transcriptomics. We identified fiber-type-

Anal sphincter fatigue: is the mechanism peripheral or central?

AIMS: Striated muscles of continence appear to exhibit marked fatigue during voluntary efforts. This is counterintuitive considering the high proportion of slow twitch muscle fibers. One explanation is that fatigue is due to central, rather than peripheral mechanisms. Here we examined the contribution of reduced voluntary activation (central fatigue) to the decline in anal sphincter (AS) and elbow flexor muscle force during voluntary contractions. METHODS: Ten healthy subjects participated. Fatigue was induced using 10 maximal voluntary contractions sustained for 20  s. During each fatiguing

The Effect of Whey Peptides and Micronutrients on Improving Exercise Performance in Mice.

Background: Durative exercise-induced fatigue influences muscle structure and exercise performance. Dietary supplements combining bioavailable proteins with essential vitamins and minerals may help reduce fatigue. Compared with proteins, whey peptides, as easily absorbed energy sources, are regarded as better promoting the utilization of vitamins and minerals. This study investigated whether the combination of whey peptides and micronutrients could synergistically improve exercise-induced fatigue and exercise performance. Methods: Four-week-old male C57BL/6J mice were forced to exercise using

Fatigue-induced decline in low-frequency common input to bilateral and unilateral plantar flexors during quiet standing.

Plantar flexor muscles play a crucial role in maintaining balance during quiet standing. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of their fatigue on common input to these muscles, using a coherence analysis. Thirteen healthy young male adults stood quietly before and after a fatigue protocol consisting of a heel raise exercise. Center of pressure (COP) displacement and electromyograms (EMGs) from the bilateral medial gastrocnemius and soleus muscles were recorded. EMG-EMG coherences between the bilateral homologous muscles (bilateral coherence) and within the unilateral muscles

Detection of enterovirus in human skeletal muscle from patients with chronic inflammatory muscle disease or fibromyalgia and healthy subjects.

Enterovirus RNA has been found previously in specimens of muscle biopsy from patients with idiopathic dilated cardiomyopathy, chronic inflammatory muscle diseases, and fibromyalgia or chronic fatigue syndrome (fibromyalgia/chronic fatigue syndrome). These results suggest that skeletal muscle may host enteroviral persistent infection. To test this hypothesis, we investigated by reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) assay the presence of enterovirus in skeletal muscle of patients with chronic inflammatory muscle diseases or fibromyalgia/chronic fatigue syndrome, and also of he

The impact of exercise training on fatigue in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

INTRODUCTION AND OBJECTIVE: Fatigue can be divided in perceived fatigue, the feeling of exhaustion or lack of energy, and performance fatigue, the reduction in muscle force/activation during a given task. This meta-analysis evaluates the impact of exercise training on fatigue, compared with normal care in patients with COPD. MATERIAL AND METHODS: We searched randomised controlled trials on MEDLINE, EMBASE, Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials and CINAHL databases from their inception to December, 31st 2019 using the terms COPD, Fatigue, Fatigability, Muscle activation, Muscle endura

Fatigue in human metabolic myopathy.

The ability of muscle fibres to sustain force can be related to their economy of energy utilization and to their capacity to regenerate energy under the prevailing conditions (aerobic or anaerobic) of contraction. The pathophysiology of muscle fatigue is analysed in patients with thyroid dysfunction and with impaired glycogenolysis, and in a patient with abnormal mitochondrial function. Muscle from hypothyroid patients, like cooled muscle, is slow in relaxing and shows a reduced energy requirement (energy economy) and reduced fatiguability, whereas muscle of hyperthyroid patients may show the …

Respiratory muscle failure.

The diseases which are commonly complicated by hypercapnic respiratory failure also compromise the respiratory muscles in several ways. Increased work of breathing, mechanical disadvantage, neuromuscular disease, impaired nutritional status, shock, hypoxemia, acidosis, and deficiency of potassium, magnesium, and inorganic phosphorus are the major non-neurologic factors which contribute to respiratory muscle fatigue and failure. Respiratory muscle fatigue has two components. High frequency fatigue occurs rapidly with intense contractile efforts but is usually not severe. It also recovers rapidl…

Impaired muscle force production and higher fatigability in a mouse model of sickle cell disease.

Skeletal muscle function has been scarcely investigated in sickle cell disease (SCD) so that the corresponding impact of sickle hemoglobin is still a matter of debate. The purpose of this study was to investigate muscle force production and fatigability in SCD and to identify whether exercise intensity could have a modulatory effect. Ten homozygous sickle cell (HbSS), ten control (HbAA) and ten heterozygous (HbAS) mice were submitted to two stimulation protocols (moderate and intense) to assess force production and fatigability. We showed that specific maximal tetanic force was lower in HbSS m

Effects of maslinic acid supplementation on exercise-induced inflammation and oxidative stress in water polo athletes: A randomized, double-blind, crossover, and placebo-controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Olive fruit is rich in bioactive pentacyclic triterpenoids, primarily maslinic acid (MA). Previous studies have demonstrated that MA exhibits anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidative effects; however, it is unclear whether MA intake during training inhibits perceptual fatigue and muscle soreness in athletes. This study analyzed the effects of MA supplementation during athletic training on perceptual fatigue and muscle soreness. METHODS: This randomized, double-blind, cross-over, and placebo-controlled trial involved 12 young, healthy male water polo athletes. After daily training for

Immediate crossover fatigue after unilateral submaximal eccentric contractions of the knee flexors involves peripheral alterations and increased global perceived fatigue.

After a unilateral muscle exercise, the performance of the non-exercised contralateral limb muscle can be also impaired. This crossover fatigue phenomenon is still debated in the literature and very few studies have investigated the influence of eccentric contractions. This study was designed to assess neuromuscular adaptations involved in the crossover fatigue of the non-exercised contralateral knee flexor muscles. Seventeen healthy young men performed a unilateral submaximal eccentric exercise of the right knee flexors until a 20% reduction in maximal voluntary isometric contraction torque w

Scapulothoracic and glenohumeral kinematics following an external rotation fatigue protocol.

STUDY DESIGN: Repeated-measures experimental design. OBJECTIVE: To determine the effects of shoulder external rotator muscle fatigue on 3-dimensional scapulothoracic and glenohumeral kinematics. BACKGROUND: The external rotator muscles of the shoulder are important for normal shoulder function. Impaired performance of these muscles has been observed in subjects with impingement syndrome and it is possible that external rotator muscle fatigue leads to altered kinematics of the shoulder girdle. METHODS AND MEASURES: Twenty subjects without a history of shoulder pathology participated in this …

Beta-endorphin decreases fatigue and increases glucose uptake independently in normal and dystrophic mice.

beta-Endorphin and a C-terminal analogue have been shown to decrease muscle fatigue and increase glucose uptake in muscles of normal mice. In order to provide evidence whether these peptides might be useful in muscle-wasting conditions and whether the two actions of the peptides are interdependent, the effect of beta-endorphin on muscle fatigue and glucose uptake was studied using isolated hemidiaphragm preparations of dystrophic mice as well as normal mice. Muscle contractions were elicited by high-frequency stimulation of the phrenic nerve. Glucose uptake was measured using (nonmetabolizable…

The fatigue experienced by late polio patients is most likely an augmented peripheral muscle fatigue. Possible explanations may be an imperfection in the sarcoplasmatic reticulum with altered calcium release mechanisms (activation) or in sliding filament function (contractile properties).
