Concurrent measurement of serum and radiomic biomarkers in the clinical investigation of equine musculoskeletal injuries: A prospective pilot study.

The prevention of musculoskeletal injuries and their related welfare and economic impacts represent an immediate priority for the horse racing industry. This prospective pilot study aimed to evaluate a method to quantitatively analyze scintigraphic features of specific anatomical regions of the horse's appendicular skeleton in combination with secondary measures of musculoskeletal metabolism in blood. Twelve horses referred for scintigraphic assessment of lameness were enrolled. Blood samples were collected immediately prior to the administration of radiotracer. Serum concentrations associated

Bone Fracture Detection Using Deep Supervised Learning from Radiological Images: A Paradigm Shift.

Bone diseases are common and can result in various musculoskeletal conditions (MC). An estimated 1.71 billion patients suffer from musculoskeletal problems worldwide. Apart from musculoskeletal fractures, femoral neck injuries, knee osteoarthritis, and fractures are very common bone diseases, and the rate is expected to double in the next 30 years. Therefore, proper and timely diagnosis and treatment of a fractured patient are crucial. Contrastingly, missed fractures are a common prognosis failure in accidents and emergencies. This causes complications and delays in patients' treatment and car

Degenerative Changes in Asymptomatic Subjects: A Descriptive Study Examining the Supraspinatus Using Musculoskeletal Sonography in a Young Population.

As many as 96% of persons over age 50 years may have shoulder abnormalities involving the rotator cuff. Many of these individuals remain asymptomatic. In contrast, there is limited research into the prevalence of shoulder pathology in the younger asymptomatic population. The supraspinatus muscle is the most likely candidate for injury within the common "rotator cuff" array of shoulder pathologies. The purpose of this study was to determine, using musculoskeletal sonography and basic clinical/physical screening, whether younger asymptomatic subjects (23.4 ± 4.5 yrs) possess any degenerative cha

The efficacy of bedside chest ultrasound: from accuracy to outcomes.

For many respiratory physicians, point-of-care chest ultrasound is now an integral part of clinical practice. The diagnostic accuracy of ultrasound to detect abnormalities of the pleura, the lung parenchyma and the thoracic musculoskeletal system is well described. However, the efficacy of a test extends beyond just diagnostic accuracy. The true value of a test depends on the degree to which diagnostic accuracy efficacy influences decision-making efficacy, and the subsequent extent to which this impacts health outcome efficacy. We therefore reviewed the demonstrable levels of test efficacy for

Novel variants in TNRC6B cause global developmental delay with speech and behavioral abnormalities, short stature, low body weight, café-au-lait spots, and metabolic abnormality.

BACKGROUND: TNRC6B deficiency syndrome, also known as global developmental delay with speech and behavioral abnormalities (MIM 619243), is a rare autosomal dominant genetic disease mainly characterized by facial dysmorphism, developmental delay/intellectual disability (DD/ID), speech and language delay, fine and motor delay, attention deficit and hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), and variable behavioral abnormalities. It is caused by heterozygous variant in the TNRC6B gene (NM_001162501.2, MIM 610740), which encodes the trinucleotide repeat-containing adaptor 6B protein. METHODS: In this study,

Dislocated Extensor Mechanism in a Child With Bilateral Absent Patella Without Other Congenital Abnormalities.

CASE: A 10-year-old boy presented with bilateral absent patella and dislocation of the extensor mechanism in the left lower extremity. He underwent a lateral release and medial plication of the extensor mechanism with a Roux-Goldthwait procedure, followed by casting and bracing treatment. The patient fully recovered with a return to sports and improved active range of motion. CONCLUSION: Bilateral absent patella without other congenital anomalies is an exceedingly rare condition and can be accompanied by a dislocation of the extensor mechanism. Treatment should address functional limitations,

Biomechanical Analysis of Different Internal Fixation Combined with Different Bone Grafting for Unstable Thoracolumbar Fractures in the Elderly.

Источник пометил публикацию как отозванную

This research was developed to accurately evaluate the unstable fractures of thoracolumbar before and after surgery and discuss the treatment timing and methods. Three-dimensional (3D) finite element method was adopted to construct the T12-L5 segment model of human body. The efficiency of percutaneous kyphoplasty (PKP) and percutaneous vertebroplasty (PVP), two commonly used internal fixation procedures, was retrospectively compared. A total of 150 patients with chest fracture who received PKP or PVP surgery in our hospital, and 104 patients with the same symptoms who received conservative tre

Muscle-Skeletal Abnormalities and Muscle Oxygenation during Isokinetic Strength Exercise in Heart Failure with Preserved Ejection Fraction Phenotype: A Cross-Sectional Study.

Exercise intolerance, a hallmark of patients with heart failure (HF), is associated with muscle weakness. However, its causative microcirculatory and muscle characteristics among those with preserved or reduced ejection fraction (HFpEF or HFrEF) phenotype is unclear. The musculoskeletal abnormalities that could result in impaired peripheral microcirculation are sarcopenia and muscle strength reduction in HF, implying lowered oxidative capacity and perfusion affect transport and oxygen utilization during exercise, an essential task from the microvascular muscle function. Besides that, skeletal …

Does pelvic incidence tell us the risk of proximal junctional kyphosis in adult spinal deformity surgery?

PURPOSE: To investigate the relationship between pelvic incidence (PI) and proximal junctional kyphosis (PJK) in patients treated surgically for adult spinal deformity (ASD) with fusion from thoracolumbar junction to sacrum. METHODS: A consecutive series of ASD patients who underwent fusion from the thoracolumbar junction to the sacrum with a minimum of 2-year follow-up was studied. Patients were divided into low PI (≤ 50°) and high PI (> 50°) groups. We compared radiographic parameters and the rates of PJK, between the two groups. A sub-analysis was performed on patients with a postoperative

Case Report of Angular Post-Tuberculotic Kyphosis Corrected Through Pedicle Subtraction Osteotomy Above C7.

BACKGROUND AND IMPORTANCE: Angular cervical kyphosis and its association with syringomyelia were rarely described. Correcting this kind of deformity from the front is extremely difficult or even impossible. Meanwhile, no study has made a report about correcting angular cervical kyphosis through pedicle subtraction osteotomy (PSO) above C7 because of the special anatomy of the vertebral artery. This is the first case of cervical deformity correction through PSO above C7. CLINICAL PRESENTATION: We present the case of a 52-yr-old man who previously underwent debridement, decompression, and skull

Biallelic PRMT7 pathogenic variants are associated with a recognizable syndromic neurodevelopmental disorder with short stature, obesity, and craniofacial and digital abnormalities.

PURPOSE: Protein arginine methyltransferase 7 (PRMT7) is a member of a family of enzymes that catalyzes the methylation of arginine residues on several protein substrates. Biallelic pathogenic PRMT7 variants have previously been associated with a syndromic neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by short stature, brachydactyly, intellectual developmental disability, and seizures. To our knowledge, no comprehensive study describes the detailed clinical characteristics of this syndrome. Thus, we aim to delineate the phenotypic spectrum of PRMT7-related disorder. METHODS: We assembled a cohort

GDF5 mutation case report and a systematic review of molecular and clinical spectrum: Expanding current knowledge on genotype-phenotype correlations.

INTRODUCTION: Brachydactyly is a bone development abnormality presenting with variable phenotypes and different transmission patterns. Mutations in GDF5 (Growth and Differentiation Factor 5, MIM *601146) account for a significant amount of cases. Here, we report on a three-generation family, where the proband and the grandfather have an isolated brachydactyly with features of both type A1 (MIM #112500) and type C (MIM #113100), while the mother shows only subtle hand phenotype signs. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Whole Exome Sequencing (WES) was performed on the two affected individuals. An in-depth

Segmental undergrowth is associated with pathogenic variants in vascular malformation genes: A retrospective case-series study.

Segmental overgrowth has been widely described in patients with congenital vascular anomalies. However, segmental undergrowth has been poorly characterized, and no large series of patients have been published. We present the clinical and molecular characteristics a cohort of 37 patients with vascular malformations and segmental undergrowth. True undergrowth was only considered when the musculoskeletal system was involved to avoid confusion with other causes of segmental reduction, as in lipodystrophy or the long-term osteopenia seen in patients with Servelle-Martorell syndrome. Deep high-throu

Cerebrofacial vascular metameric syndrome is caused by somatic pathogenic variants in PIK3CA.

Disorganized morphogenesis of arteries, veins, capillaries, and lymphatic vessels results in vascular malformations. Most individuals with isolated vascular malformations have postzygotic (mosaic), activating pathogenic variants in a handful of oncogenes within the PI3K-RAS-MAPK pathway (Padia et al., Laryngoscope Investig Otolaryngol 4: 170-173 [2019]). Activating pathogenic variants in the gene PIK3CA, which encodes for the catalytic subunit of phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase, are present in both lymphatic and venous malformations as well as arteriovenous malformations in other complex disorde

An Anatomical Basis for the Myofascial Trigger Points of the Abductor Hallucis Muscle.

Myofascial pain syndrome is characterized by pain and a limited range of joint motion caused by muscle contracture related to motor-end-plate dysfunction and the presence of myofascial trigger points (MTrPs). It is the most frequent cause of musculoskeletal pain, with a worldwide prevalence varying between 13.7% and 47%. Of the patients with myofascial pain syndrome, approximately 17% have pain in the medial hindfoot area. The abductor hallucis muscle is located in the medial, posterior region of the foot and is related to painful plantar syndromes. The objective of this study was to describe

Knee orthopedic problems in newborns and infancy: a review.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: We present the reader with insight on the most common disorders of the knee in newborns and infants. Knee issues in this population may confuse the first contact physicians due to certain peculiarities of the immature immune system, small size and underdevelopment of joint anatomy. Data presented here are recent and significant, and something to bear in mind when caring for children of this age. RECENT FINDINGS: With the advent of new diagnostic methods, a shift in the causative agent of pediatric knee infections has been noted. Minimally invasive methods such as arthrocent

Population-level assessment of atlas occipitalization in artificially modified crania from pre-Hispanic Peru.

Atlas occipitalization (AO) is a spinal anomaly, characterized by the fusion of the first cervical vertebra and occipital bone, with a complex etiology that can arise from congenital and environmental causes. AO has been reported in three regions of pre-Hispanic Peru in skeletal remains with artificial cranial modification (ACM), which involves the use of compression devices to permanently alter cranial shape and may have affected the fusion of the atlas and occipital bone. The aims of this study were to gain insights into AO's etiology by testing correlations between AO and ACM presence/type

[STERNAL CLEFT – REPORT OF THREE CASES].

During the last 25 years we surgically treated three patients with sternal cleft anomaly, aged from 6 weeks to 2 years. The aim of this case series is to present this extremely rare congenital anomaly and differences in the operative treatment of sternal cleft (SC) depending on patients age due to flexibility of the chest wall. Patients presented to us with signs of sternal cleft; displaced sternoclavicular articulations and paradoxical motion of the skin over the defect. Preoperatively we performed X-ray and computed tomography of the chest which revealed displaced sternoclavicular articulati
