Mycobacterium haemophilum infection in canine cerebrospinal fluid.

A 4-year-old female spayed Australian cattle dog was presented to the Emergency Service at the University of Missouri Veterinary Health Cent … n revealed a marked mixed pleocytosis with intralesional structures morphologically consistent with Mycobacterium sp. Standard DNA PCR assay performed on the CSF yielded the presence of Mycobacterium haemophilum. To the authors' knowledge, this is the first reported case of CNS mycobacteriosis diagnosed on CSF analysis in a dog.

Predictive biomarkers for latent Mycobacterium tuberculosis infection.

Tuberculosis is a leading cause of infectious death worldwide, with almost a fourth of the world's population latently infected with its causative agent, Mycobacterium tuberculosis. Current diagnostic methods are insufficient to differentiate between healthy and latently infected populations. Here, we used a machine learning approach to analyze publicly available proteomic data from saliva and serum in Ethiopia's healthy, latent TB (LTBI) and active TB (ATBI) people. Our analysis discovered a profile of six proteins, Mast Cell Expressed Membrane Protein-1, Hemopexin, Lamin A/C, Small Proline R…

Mechanopathology of biofilm-like Mycobacterium tuberculosis cords.

Mycobacterium tuberculosis (Mtb) cultured axenically without detergent forms biofilm-like cords, a clinical identifier of virulence. In lung-on-chip (LoC) and mouse models, cords in alveolar cells contribute to suppression of innate immune signaling via nuclear compression. Thereafter, extracellular cords cause contact-dependent phagocyte death but grow intercellularly between epithelial cells. The absence of these mechanopathological mechanisms explains the greater proportion of alveolar lesions with increased immune infiltration and dissemination defects in cording-deficient Mtb infections. …

Mycobacterium leprae: Pathogenesis, diagnosis, and treatment options.

Mycobacterium leprae is known to cause leprosy, a neurological and dermatological disease. In the past 20 years, 16 million leprosy cases have been recorded and more than 200,000 new cases were registered each year, indicating that the disease is still progressing without hindrance. M. leprae, an intracellular bacterium, infects the Schwann cells of the peripheral nervous system. Several types of leprosy have been described, including indeterminate, tuberculoid, borderline tuberculoid, mid-borderline, borderline lepromatous and lepromatous, and three different forms of leprosy reactions, namel…

Treatment for Mycobacterium avium complex lung disease.

Mycobacterium avium complex (MAC) is the major pathologic nontuberculous mycobacteria causing lung disease (LD) in humans worldwide. Although the burden of MAC-LD has increased over the past two decades, treatment remains difficult because of intolerance of long-term antibiotics, lack of adherence to guidelines, and disease recurrence. The current guidelines recommend antibiotic initiation for patients with MAC-LD and severe disease and in those with disease progression. Thus, physicians should consider antibiotic treatment for patients with MAC-LD and cavitary pulmonary lesions or symptomatic…

Disseminated Mycobacterium genavense infection mimicking TAFRO syndrome.

TAFRO syndrome is a rare variant of idiopathic multicentric Castleman's disease, for which disseminated non-tuberculous mycobacteria (NTM) infection must be excluded. However, due to the slow and fastidious growth of the organisms, identification of the pathogen is often challenging. We herein describe a case of disseminated Mycobacterium genavence infection, in which manifestations of the patient were confusingly similar to those of TAFRO syndrome. A 69-year-old Japanese man presented with prolonged fever accompanying pain in his back and ribs on the right side. Systemic investigations reveal…

Mycobacterium bolletii Lung Disease in Cystic Fibrosis.

BACKGROUND: The cystic fibrosis (CF) pathogen, Mycobacterium abscessus complex, covers three subspecies: M. abscessus, M. massiliense, and M. bolletii. There are no clinical outcome data concerning M. bolletii. Our aim was to characterize M. bolletii lung infections in patients with CF. METHODS: We included patients with M. bolletii lung infection recorded between 1994 and 2012 in France. Data were collected from the CF registry, medical records, and questionnaires submitted to the CF primary physician. Strains were typed by multilocus sequence typing analysis. RESULTS: Fifteen cases were id…

Mycobacterium chimaera Hepatitis: A New Disease Entity.

Mycobacterium chimaera was identified as a species within the Mycobacterium avium complex in 2004. Until recently, it was predominantly seen in immunocompromised patients. In 2015, an outbreak of disseminated M. chimaera disease was described in European patients after undergoing open-heart surgery in which contaminated heater-cooler water units were used. Using whole genomic sequencing and phylogenetic analysis, investigators found a highly clonal outbreak from the German manufacturing site of the heater-cooler water units. This outbreak has now proven to be world-wide. Patients present with …

Laryngeal Inflammatory Pseudotumour Secondary to Mycobacterium kansasii.

BACKGROUND: Inflammatory pseudotumours (IPT) are rare benign tumours characterised by spindle-shaped histiocyte proliferation often mimicking a soft tissue sarcoma. They can occur in different parts of the body and various aetiological factors have been proposed. To our knowledge this is the first case report of IPT of the larynx caused by mycobacterial disease. CASE REPORT: We report a case of IPT of the larynx in an immunocompromised 81-year-old lady presenting with stridor and dysphagia with known disseminated Mycobacterium kansasii of the lungs. CONCLUSION: This case demonstrates both th…

Cryptic Microheteroresistance Explains Mycobacterium tuberculosis Phenotypic Resistance.

RATIONALE: Minority drug-resistant Mycobacterium tuberculosis subpopulations can be associated with phenotypic resistance but are poorly detected by Sanger sequencing or commercial molecular diagnostic assays. OBJECTIVES: To determine the role of targeted next-generation sequencing in resolving these minor variant subpopulations. METHODS: We used single molecule overlapping reads (SMOR), a targeted next-generation sequencing approach that dramatically reduces sequencing error, to analyze primary cultured isolates phenotypically resistant to rifampin, fluoroquinolones, or aminoglycosides, but…

Total knee prosthesis infected with Mycobacterium tuberculosis.

Mycobacterium tuberculosis (MTB) infection of a prosthetic joint is rarely reported in developed countries.1 Typically, MTB infection involves the hips or knees, and the infection can occur secondary to crushing and degradation of the granuloma during surgery or, less commonly, from distant foci spreading through the blood. In the present case, MTB infection likely resulted from haematogenous spread since multiple hot spots suggestive of MTB infection were noted in other sites. Early diagnosis allows for antitubercular therapy with retention of the prosthesis, while late diagnosis frequently r…

Cutaneous Mycobacterium abscessus infection following hair transplant.

A 28-year-old man presented with a 10-day history of scalp nodules. He had undergone hair transplantation 2 months previously. Incision and drainage of one of the nodules yielded gelatinous material, which was sent for microscopy and culture, including low-temperature culture. After 2 weeks of incubation, culture of the nodule yielded acid- and alcohol-fast bacilli, which were identified as Mycobacterium abscessus, a rapidly growing, nontuberculous mycobacterium, which has been reported to cause cutaneous, soft tissue and respiratory infections following trauma, surgery or injection with nonst…

Mycobacterium avium infection complicating congenital bronchial atresia.

Bronchial atresia is a rare congenital malformation that is often complicated by infectious disease; however, mycobacterial infection is rare. Here we report a case of Mycobacterium avium infection complicating congenital bronchial atresia. A 50-year-old woman consulted our institution for further investigation of a nodular lesion in an emphysematous lung due to congenital bronchial atresia. Because we were unable to rule out malignant disease, we performed video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery. After left S8 segmentectomy, the nodular lesion were diagnosed as Mycobacterial avium infection. Thr…
