Extramammary Paget's disease is a rare neoplasm of apocrine gland-bearing areas of the skin. The most common site of presentation is the vulva. Surgery is the most frequently reported therapy so far; however, it is invasive and it is complicated by a high rate of recurrence. For this reason, several less-invasive treatments have been recently proposed, including photodynamic therapy. We describe in this article the case of an 84-year-old patient with a noninvasive vulvar extramammary Paget's disease successfully treated with methyl-aminolevulinic acid photodynamic therapy associated with topic

A case of adenocarcinoma with significant Paneth cell differentiation arising in a villoglandular polyp at the ampulla of Vater is presented. Paneth-like cells, containing distinct fuchsinophilic granules, were a prominent component of the nonglandular invasive adenocarcinoma and were also seen in the associated adenomatous polyp. Lysozyme, trichrome, and periodic acid-Schiff digest stains, and electron microscopy confirmed that the granules were lysosomal in nature. This case confirms that cells with Paneth-like features can be a significant component in invasive neoplasms and can occur at un

BACKGROUND: Solid pseudopapillary epithelial neoplasm (SPEN) of the pancreas is an indolent tumor of rare occurrence seen predominantly in young females in the 2nd to 4th decade. These tumors tend to grow large, producing a mass effect, or may show local invasiveness.
METHOD: This is a retrospective analysis of a prospectively maintained database of SPEN cases operated at a tertiary care hospital in India from 2011-2023.
RESULTS: The cohort consisted of 29 patients with a male: female ratio of 1:8.6, and a median age of 24 years. The majority of the lesions were in the body and tail of the p

Background: Non-Hodgkin's lymphoma (NHL), the most frequent hematological neoplasm worldwide, represents a heterogeneous group of malignancies. The etiology of NHL remains to be fully elucidated, but the role of adipose tissue (AT) in immune function via the secretion of adipokines was recently recognized. Among adipokines, adiponectin has garnered attention for its beneficial properties. This study aimed to explore the in vitro effects of AdipoRon, an adiponectin agonist, on JVM-2, a lymphoblast cell line used as a representative disease model. Methods: JVM-2 cells were treated with different

BACKGROUND Papillary intralymphatic angioendothelioma (PILA) is a rare vascular tumor affecting children and young adults, with less than 50 cases reported in the literature. This tumor typically presents in the extremities, exhibits borderline behavior, and has a prominent lymphatic phenotype. Originally thought to be malignant, PILA was later recognized for its borderline behavior and lymphatic features, leading to its current classification as a "rarely metastasizing lymphatic vascular neoplasm". CASE REPORT We present the case of a 10-year-old girl with a 6-year history of a right facial v

Adenomyoepithelioma (AME) of the breast and gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GISTs) are rare benign (primarily) tumors observed in the breast and gastrointestinal tract, respectively. The coexistence of both of these rare tumors is extremely rare; therefore, the author describes the clinical presentation and pathophysiological findings of such a unique case in this study. A 56-year-old female patient with no medical history presented with a substantial right breast lump, severe nausea, and vomiting, and suffered from iron deficiency anemia. Radiological observation and a right breast excisiona

BACKGROUND: CD44 is an epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) surface receptor that regulates the interactivity between the cells and the extracellular matrix, thereby promoting cell migration. The epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) family is a trans-membrane kinase-related protein. It regulates cell adhesion proteins, which may promote cell proliferation and invasiveness. Mesenchymal epithelial transition (MET) is another EMT receptor that stimulates cell proliferation, invasion, survival, and angiogenesis. This study aimed to evaluate the prognostic impact of CD44, EGFR expressions, an

Urothelial carcinoma (UC) is the most common neoplasm of the canine urinary tract. Clinical presentation of UC is shared with several other, more common urinary tract disorders, and this often delays diagnosis of the UC. Definitive diagnosis of UC requires histopathologic examination of a biopsy specimen, but the cost and invasiveness for these diagnostic tests often result in most diagnoses being made on the basis of clinical findings, diagnostic imaging, and cytologic examination of urine sediment. Regardless of the diagnostic process used, most UCs currently are not diagnosed until they are

Malignant peritoneal mesothelioma (MPM) is a rare neoplasm of the peritoneum, causally related to asbestos exposure. Nonspecific symptoms with a late diagnosis results in poor survival (<1 year). Treatment with cytoreductive surgery and hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy has improved survival in some patients (median 3-5 years). Hence, new therapies are urgently needed. MUC1 is a glycosylation-dependent protein that confers tumours with invasiveness, metastasis and chemoresistance. Bromelain (cysteine proteinase) hydrolyses glycosidic bonds. Therefore, we investigated the antitumour eff

Hepatic pseudolymphoma (HPL) and primary hepatic marginal zone B cell lymphoma of mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue (MALT lymphoma) are rare diseases and the differential diagnosis between these two entities is sometimes difficult. We herein report a 56-year-old Japanese woman who was pointed out to have a space occupying lesion in the left lateral segment of the liver. Hepatitis viral-associated antigen/antibody was negative and liver function tests including lactic dehydrogenase, peripheral blood count, tumor markers and soluble interleukin-2 receptor were all within normal limit. BACKGROUND: Because intraductal papillary mucinous neoplasm of the bile duct (IPMN-B) is believed to show a better clinical course than non-papillary biliary neoplasms, it is important to make a precise diagnosis and to perform complete surgical resection.
CASE PRESENTATION: We herein report a case of malignant IPMN-B treated by right trisectionectomy with caudate lobectomy and extrahepatic bile duct resection. Radiologic images showed marked dilatation of the left medial sectional bile duct (B4) resulting in a bulky cystic mass with multiple internal papillary projections. Duodenal endoscopi

Uterine fibroids are benign neoplasms that can cause distressing symptoms in women during their reproductive age. They are often associated with menorrhagia that can determine anemia or bulk-related symptoms. Different treatment options are available: medical therapy has the goal to treat related symptoms, while semi-invasive or non-invasive uterus-sparing procedures aim to treat symptoms and eventually to determine a reduction in fibroids size. In this review we illustrate the current semi-invasive and totally non-invasive most frequently used uterus sparing procedures available. A review of

Preneoplastic and neoplastic biliary disease comprises biliary intraepithelial neoplasia (BilIN), intraductal papillary neoplasms, mucinous cystic neoplasms (MCNs), and cholangiocarcinoma and their variants. Correct recognition of these entities can be challenging, especially on small/needle biopsies, but is required to plan therapy and guide transplant in the setting of cirrhosis. Salient histologic features of these entities, along with ancillary use of immunostains and key molecular findings aiding in diagnosis, are discussed. Type 2 intraductal papillary neoplasm of the bile ducts is typic

Accurate tumor localization is critical to performing minimally invasive colorectal resection. This study reviews the safety and reliability of tattooing colorectal neoplasms prior to laparoscopic resection. We retrospectively reviewed 50 consecutive patients with colorectal neoplasms who underwent endoscopic tattooing prior to laparoscopic resection. Data were obtained from medical charts, endoscopy records, and pathology reports. No complications related to endoscopy or tattooing were incurred. Five neoplasms (10%) were in the ascending colon, five (10%) were in the transverse colon, eight (

There is limited information about the molecular changes involved in the pathogenesis of gallbladder carcinoma (GBC). Our recent allelotyping analyses have indicated that chromosome 3p loss of heterozygosity (LOH), including the fragile histidine triad (FHIT) candidate tumor-suppressor gene locus at 3p14.2, is frequently detected in this neoplasm. To investigate the role of the FHIT abnormalities in the multistage sequential development of GBC, 33 formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded invasive GBC specimens and 76 accompanying histologically normal (n = 43) and dysplastic (n = 33) epithelia were ex

Appendix pathology represents uncommonly encountered specimens with unique diagnostic challenges. To delineate common knowledge gaps, extramural consults submitted to seven institutions between 2016-2017 were reviewed. All appendix consults were resections (100%, n = 43), and the majority were directed for consultation by the originating pathologist (95%, n = 41) with no additional studies performed by the consultant (65%, n = 28). This study was dominated by inquiries related to low grade appendiceal mucinous neoplasms (44%, n = 19) and goblet cell carcinoid related neoplasms (19%, n = 8). Of

BACKGROUND: A right adrenal gland may present in the form of adreno-hepatic fusion (AHF), in which the adrenal cells are interspersed among the hepatocytes without septation. This rare, naturally-occurring phenomenon may be associated with preoperative misdiagnosis. We present two cases of adrenal tumor in patients with AHF that were misdiagnosed, despite thorough preoperative work-ups. The findings emphasize the importance of suspecting adrenal tumor arising in AHF for lesions at the periphery of liver segment 7, even when located inside the liver. In addition, AHF can resemble malignant inva
