[Malignant rhabdoid tumor of the maxillary sinus: a case report].

Malignant rhabdoid tumors(MRTs) are most commonly found in the kidneys of young children, and the prognosis is very poor. Here,we present a case of primary MRT of the maxillary sinus, which is an extremely rare and scarcely been reported.A 56-year-old male complained of repeated epistaxis for over 1 year duration.CT scan showed soft tissue density in the paranasal sinus, and no obvious bone resorption or damage was observed. The patient underwent endoscopic sinus surgery.Postoperative biopsy showed undifferentiated malignant neoplasm with features of rhabdoid differentiation. Immunohistochemistry

Kaposiform hemangioendothelioma arising from the maxillary sinus: a case report.

Kaposiform hemangioendothelioma is a very infrequent, locally aggressive vascular neoplasm, characterized by fascicular spindle cell proliferation. It occurs almost exclusively in infants and adolescents, and is often associated with Kasabach-Merritt phenomenon. The tumor is predominantly located subcutaneously or in the deep soft tissue of the extremities and trunk, peritoneum, or retroperitoneum. However, this tumor can sometimes be located on the head and neck. We report a case of kaposiform hemangioendothelioma of the maxillary sinus in a 4-month-old female infant presenting with cheek swe

Case report: gastric carcinoma as a complication of dyskeratosis congenita in an adolescent boy.

Dyskeratosis congenita (DC), or the Zinsser-Engman-Cole syndrome, is a rare X-linked heritable disorder, affecting primarily the ectodermal tissues, with hyperpigmentation of the skin, leukoplakia of the buccal and anal mucosa, and nail dystrophy (1, 2). Aplastic anemia (3) and a variety of neoplasms (4, 5) are some of the extraectodermal manifestation of this disorder, which although X-linked recessive, has also been described in a few females (6, 7). Mental retardation, diarrhea, and gastrointestinal bleeding have been considered to be less frequent features (8). We report an adolescent Indi

When Marrow Mimics Malignancy: Tumefactive Hepatic Extramedullary Hematopoiesis Presenting as a Hypervascular Liver Mass.

Extramedullary hematopoiesis (EMH) is the production of blood cells outside the bone marrow, usually occurring as a compensatory response to hematologic stress or marrow dysfunction. Although EMH most commonly presents as diffuse tissue infiltration, it can rarely manifest as a localized solid mass, known as tumefactive EMH, creating a significant diagnostic challenge by mimicking benign or malignant lesions on non-invasive imaging. We report the case of a 47-year-old male with cirrhosis secondary to autoimmune hepatitis, receiving mycophenolic acid, who presented with severe symptomatic anemi

Application of the Milan and IAC-IARC-WHO Systems in diagnosing soft tissue and bone tumors of the salivary glands: The Institut Curie experience.

BACKGROUND: Soft tissue and bone tumors of the salivary gland were compared using classic 4-tier, Milan System for Reporting Salivary Gland Cytopathology (MSRSGC), and the International Academy of Cytology-International Agency for Research on Cancer-World Health Organization (IAC-IARC-WHO) Reporting System for Soft Tissue Cytopathology. METHODS: The authors retrospectively analyzed 2219 salivary gland fine-needle aspiration (FNA) samples collected at the Institut Curie in Paris between 1954 and 2022. A total of 86 cases (3.9%) were identified as soft tissue and bone tumors, with histological

Xanthogranulomatous epithelial tumor: report of 6 cases of a novel, potentially deceptive lesion with a predilection for young women.

Epithelial marker expression and/or epithelial differentiation, as well as "anomalous" expression of keratins, are features of some soft tissue tumors. Recently, we have encountered an unusual mesenchymal tumor composed of bland, distinctly eosinophilic, keratin-positive epithelial cells, which were almost entirely obscured by xanthogranulomatous inflammation. Six cases were identified (5 F, 1 M; 16-62 years (median 21 years)) arising in soft tissue (n = 4) and bone (n = 2) and ranging in size from 2 to 7 cm. The tumors were generally circumscribed, with a fibrous capsule containing lymphoid a

Orthopaedic problems in old dogs.

With advancing years a dog may suffer from a variety of conditions of its musculoskeletal system which adversely affect its ability to exercise and may cause it to be retired from activities in work and sport for which it has been trained. Arthritis is common, and in many cases arises from developmental errors suffered in puppyhood, such as hip dysplasia, osteochondrosis and growth plate disorders. Trauma to joints (ligament ruptures, dislocations and fractures) may also be the precursor of degenerative joint changes later in life. It is important, therefore, for all such conditions to be corr

Pigmented Villonodular Synovitis Arising from Calcaneocuboid Joint in an Army Staff: A Case Report.

Pigmented villonodular synovitis (PVNS) is a locally destructive benign lesion usually affecting the synovial tissue of weight-bearing joints. Herein we reported a 20-year-old male patient who was an army staff with a foot lesion which was painful in army boots. In the beginning, the lesion was considered a ganglion cyst. Further investigations revealed cortical erosion of cuboid bone on the radiograph. Pigmented villonodular synovitis was considered as a probable diagnosis after observation of low signal lesion around the calcaneocuboid joint on both T1 and T2 images of Magnetic Resonance Ima

Embryonal rhabdomyosarcoma in the maxillary sinus with orbital involvement in a pediatric patient: Case report.

This report presents a case of embryonal rhabdomyosarcoma (eRMS) located in the left maxillary sinus and invading the orbital cavity in a ten-year-old male patient who was treated at a referral hospital. The images provided from the computed tomography showed a heterogeneous mass with soft-tissue density, occupying part of the left half of the face inside the maxillary sinus, and infiltrating and destroying the bone structure of the maxillary sinus, left orbit, ethmoidal cells, nasal cavity, and sphenoid sinus. An analysis of the histological sections revealed an undifferentiated malignant neo

Primary Myeloid Sarcoma of Ovary: A Case Report and Review of the Literature.

Myeloid sarcoma (granulocytic sarcoma or chloroma) is a tumor formed by myeloid precursor cells in any localization other than the bone marrow. It can occur without underlying acute myeloid leukemia (AML) or other myeloid neoplasms. Herein, we present a forty-two-year-old female patient who underwent surgery because of a left adnexal mass. Microscopic examination of the specimen revealed cord-like arrangement of the tumor cells with a diffuse growth of small blue cells effacing the ovarian stroma. Adult granulosa cell tumor was in the differential given the scanty cytoplasm of the tumor and in

Ceruminous gland carcinoma of the external auditory canal presenting as chronic otitis media.

OBJECTIVE: Ceruminous neoplasms of the external ear canal are rare. Classification, clinical behavior, and management of these tumours are controversial. We report a case of carcinoma originating from the ceruminous glands of the external ear canal (EAC), operated based on a diagnosis of chronic otitis media with polyp. CASE REPORT: A 48-year-old man presented with left ear discharge and hearing loss. Clinical examination showed a well-circumscribed polypoid mass limited to the EAC. There was no history of bloody ear discharge or radiological findings of bony erosion suggestive of malignancy.

Ameloblastic fibro-odontoma.

Ameloblastic fibro-odontoma is a slow growing, benign, expansile epithelial odontogenic tumour with odontogenic mesenchyme, accounting for 0.3-1.7% of jaw tumours, signifying its rarity. The WHO defines it as "a neoplasm composed of proliferating odontogenic epithelium in a cellular ectomesenchymal tissue with varying degrees of inductive changes and dental hard tissue formation". We report a case of an 11-year-old girl who presented to the Department of Maxillo-Facial Medicine and Radiology for the evaluation of a swelling in the left posterior mandible. Her clinical chart and investigations

[Resection of neoplasm in fourth ventricle and at the back of pons through cerebellomedullary fissure approach].

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the advantage of cerebellomedullary fissure approach to resect the space occupying lesion in the fourth ventricle region and at the back of pons and to discuss the microsurgical skills. METHODS: The craniotomy is through the posterior fossa. To maximize the width of exposure, a long skin incision is made from the occipital protuberance down to the C4-5 level, and a free occipital bone flap is turned. The tonsils of cerebellum are reached by opening the tonsillovermian fissure and then moved upward so as to expose the operating field. Neoplasm in the fourth ventricle

Childhood diskitis: computed tomographic findings.

The spectrum of computed tomographic findings in seven children with diskitis is reported. Paravertebral inflammatory masses, intraspinal (epidural) soft-tissue extension with thecal sac deformity, and psoas involvement with abscess were demonstrated in 7/7, 6/7, and 1/7 patients, respectively. Plain radiographic findings of disk space narrowing and vertebral end-plate destruction were confirmed by CT in all cases. Follow-up CT in two patients revealed persistent bone destruction despite resolution of soft-tissue inflammation and clinical abnormalities. CT proved most useful in the diagnosis o

NFATC2::NUTM2A/B Fusions Characterize a Novel Indolent Myoepithelial-Like Neoplasm of the Lungs and Salivary Glands.

With the increasing use of next-generation sequencing, the classification of heretofore unclassified neoplasms is evolving rapidly. Specifically, gene fusions have emerged as context-specific defining genetic markers for an increasing number of entities, mostly of soft tissue, bone, and salivary gland origin. We describe four myoepithelial-like neoplasms of salivary (two) and pulmonary (two) origin, carrying recurrent NFATC2 fusions involving NUTM2B (three) and NUTM2A (one) as fusion partners. Patients were two females and two males aged 24-67 years (median, 33). The tumor size ranged from 1 t

Unusual pelvic mass in a young adult: prostatic Ewing's sarcoma with distant metastases.

Ewing's sarcoma is an aggressive small round cell tumour that usually arises from bone or soft tissues in children and young adults. Primary origin within the prostate is exceptionally rare, with only isolated cases documented. We describe a man in his 20s who presented with urinary obstruction, constipation and leg pain. Imaging revealed a bulky pelvic mass arising from the prostate and bilateral hydroureteronephrosis. Histology demonstrated a round cell neoplasm with strong CD99 and FLI1 positivity, confirming Ewing's sarcoma. Staging PET-CT identified widespread metastases involving lung, l

Non-classical effects of vitamin D: Non-bone effects of vitamin D.

Our understanding of vitamin D has improved considerably in recent years. The role of vitamin D in preventing osteoporotic fractures is now well-established. However, an important controversy has emerged in the last decade concerning the effects of the active form of vitamin D (1,25-dihydroxy-vitamin D) on tissues other than bone (non-classical effects). The demonstration that the vitamin D receptor (VDR) is ubiquitously, expressed combined with increasing observational data supporting a relationship between the level of 25-hydroxy-vitamin D in the serum and chronic metabolic disorders, cardio

Complications of radiation therapy.

The skeletal effects of radiation are dependent upon many variables, but the pathologic features are consistent. Radiation may cause immediate or delayed cell death, cellular injury with recovery, arrest of cellular division, or abnormal repair with neoplasia. Radiation necrosis and radiation-induced neoplasm still occur despite the use of supervoltage therapy. Complications of radiotherapy are well known and have led to more judicious use of this therapeutic modality. With few exceptions, benign bone tumors are no longer treated with irradiation. Radiation necrosis may be difficult to differe

Osteosarcoma Nanomedicine: From Resistance Reversal to Bone Reconstruction.

The clinical management of Osteosarcoma (OS) is primarily hindered by two major challenges: intractable multidrug resistance and the reconstruction of critical-sized post-surgical bone defects. Nanomedicine provides a promising paradigm to overcome these clinical limitations. Synthesizing over 100 pivotal studies published predominantly between 2021 and 2026, this review moves beyond treating OS nanotherapy and bone tissue engineering as independent fields, conceptualizing them instead as a contiguous clinical pipeline. We map the trajectory of nanoscale interventions based on OS-specific biol
